650l is street legal. it also has an air cooled engine while the R is liquid cooled. The L is heavier and more comfy, but less powerful and nimble. basically the R is the best big bore offroad dirtbike in history, while the L is an older technology street legal dirtbike which is tough as nails and will run forever long as u keep oil in it.. oh the L also has electric start which owns!!! try kickstarting when ur stuck on a hill:P
