@fireplacetea landing on a carrier moving at 45+ knots is extremely diffrent and 10x more challenging, did you know 80% of civilian airliners have auto pilot landing capabilities now?
There is no reverse on carrier planes ! Ha Ha! You miss the wire and you "bolter" and go around again..Once the hook catches the wires, the arresting cable runs out to bring the plane to a halt so you're not brought to an instant stop.Instant stop would break the plane in half not to mention killing the pilot.
gtcp371, did you know two thirds of all america's gas supply goes to the civilian sector? I don't know how much THAT is, but it's a buttload MORE than the military.
We don't fight our enemies with armored smart cars, we fight with 40 ton tanks. You have problem with that then talk to your congressman and go pass the legislation to change it and stop bitching on YouTube.
People like me that dream to become a fighter pilot go so emotional when watching things like this ! Nothing on earth could make me feel better than being able to do that even while knowing i m risking my life !
It isn't reverse thrust. You throttle up to take off again in case a cable snaps or there is some other abort reason. Landing on a carrier is double hard for that reason, you are landing and taking off (in case of an abort) at the same time.
whats really amazing is how they power the engines back up when they hit instead of turning them down. If you listen carefully at the end as they touch down he pushes them back up incase of bolter.
472marine -- that's the Mighty War Hoover (the Lockheed S-3 Viking); its nickname derives from the fairly unique sound of its engines which, as you can hear in the clip, kinda sounds like a vacuum cleaner (if one uses a bit of artistic license).
raderrader -- I'm a Non-Flying Object, and *I* could land on runways the size the Civilian Flying Club uses (actually have, in fact). Try it on a 600-foot runway that moves. At night. In bad weather. _Then_ tell me who the real pilots are. ;)
@tingrin666 actually, not. The pilot pushed the throttle to full power just in case he misses the wires. There's no need for reverse when you have the arresting cables, and if you missed the cables, you'd be in the ocean.
this must be the coolest job in the world.... thinking of kids explaining their parent's jobs. they can use a live tranmission of their parent's current activities. one kid shows this. mum's just landing on an aircraft carrier in the red sea... omg so outstanding
Its absolutely not an Intruder or a Prowler, there is no refueling probe visible. The Intruder had a prominent refueling probe that was always in the view
it only looks rough because the plane hooks onto stretchy cables running across the carrier deck which is how the plane slows dow from 130 knots to a stop on a short runway
There is generally a small slingshot effect. You can probably see in a few videos in the time between coming to a stop and raising the hook to taxi, the plane will roll back slowly.
"since the cables catch planes, could they pull the plane back again?"
Yep. That's how they unhook the cable. They tug the plane backward for a second, and while it's rolling back the hook comes free and the pilot raises it. Then they reel the cable in for the next plane, at intervals of less than 45 seconds.
The Hoover vacuum cleaner sound gives it away - it is an S-3 Viking. We nick-name them "Hoover" in the fleet. A-6 Intruder and EA-6 Prowler also have side-by-side seating.
seems like you are going super slow, i almost thought it was a helicopter with the windshield washers. thats some flying skill to land on a carrier. cool shot
It seems to me that he is going into full throttle. You just don't stop an engine that fast and make it go the other way. My guess is he throttled up just to get the plane fully down due to the under pressure which will come, when your flaps are fully extracted and you throttle up

It seems to me that he is going into full throttle. You just don't stop an engine that fast and make it go the other way. My guess is he throttled up just to get the plane fully down due to the under pressure which will come, when your flaps are fully extracted and you throttle up
