Can someone please answer: is anti-aliasing actually supposed to affect textures too? In BF3 you can clearly see a difference on the ground texture and it makes me wonder if that's why my fps drops to half if I put even 2x multi-sample AA.
For those of y'all looking for the difference between the original and the anti-aliasing clips, watch for the thin vertical rods (antenna, telephone poles). They exhibit some flickering due to aliasing when the angle of the frame slowly shifts.
@1tach1m4ng3ky0u You probably don't know what to look at. If you look at the edges of things, such as the top of the vehicle with the treads (I don't know what to call it) you'll see a difference.
@1tach1m4ng3ky0u Well, you'll be able to make things out from a distance more easily. I guess you could just try it on full and see if you get a playable framerate, and if not, you can just tune it down until you do. And I don't think it really matters what resolution you use it on. (I'm no AA expert tbh)
Now, if only AA wasn't so dam draining on performance, I try to run all my games on x4 MSAA if possible, but with an entry level card, SSAA is pretty well out.
@Hokusepokuse hm... i appreciate your answer but i meat graphically difference. i know with AA the game runs slow if you don't have a good system but i can't see the difference in graphics. is there something visible?
@playmovie696 I was just joking. Actually the edges are more smooth with AA turned on. So if your game is running at 640X480, antialiasing will make it much smoother, but if it is set to 1920X1080 you do not need AA, because there are already so many pixels- they will make everything look nice :)
I'm so jelous of people who cant see the difference, people who cant see jaggies. Are my eyes just amazing or are these people blind? Well you guys are lucky you cant see them, you wont want to. Anyways, this is MSAA not SSAA, right? I still see alot of jaggies on 4x AA.
@Rynade I think it's MSAA. You are probably noticing some shimmering. Even with high AA it's hard to eliminate shimmering completely. I remember the times I didn't notice aliasing, ignorance is bliss.
i can on portal first slice and half life two use these settings:
high shadowing, reflect world water, medium-high textureing, blur effect, anisotropic filter 4xcsaa, and anti aliasing 2x... but on tf2, high text, high shadowing, no blur, no anti or ani, why is that? lol
I always keep Anti Aliasing OFF with my 1920x1080 resolution. Even if i have a GTX 275, i keep it off because i want to get the maximum performance out of the card, Anti-Aliasing just drains too much power from it.
You must be blind if you cant see the difference. Look at the edges, its much more smooth with higher AA. Watch this if you want it explained /watch?v=OLf03IMLsLI
@TheSwedez look at the stairs. with no anti aliasing, as the camera moves, the ladder seems to have rough edges on the outside. with aliasing 2x on, when the camera moves, you cant see that. at least i think thats the diference
@morten2212 boss.... if u have so much time in the world to note the most minute difference, then either u should be a "professional" in gaming industry, or.. well, may be, .. get a life.
What you gotta look at are the edges to objects like the truck. With no AA, the edges "scitter" up or down as if pixels are obvious. 2x shows that they're there but less noticeable. Lastly, 4x is as close to photo-realism you can get.
A good test is character creation in Dragon Age: Origins. No AA, the armor's edges and features "scitter". Maxxed AA, the edges are perfect and so close to real life, it's scary.
I have LotRO and I have a Radeon HD 4670 and I play with all Ultra High graphics and 8x anti-aliasing! It's so cool, but too bad I don't have Vista to play with Directx 10 although Everything is pretty much the same when it's ultra high
@diegofg10 look at the edges, at no anti aliasing there are major staircasing effects.with anti aliasing, the effect is reduced if you still cant see it watch it in high definition
@xulasx 16xQ AA: WHAT THE FUCK BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM MWAAAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
AA is a performance killer, with a 6970 2gb i can safely set it to 4x in any game without it killing the frame-rate. 8x usually kills it.
AA makes most graphics much, much better and i´m disappointed how much it kills frame-rate in most games. Although if you have a radeon card like me, you´re better off using FXAA (If the game has it), which is a new kind of AA, for radeon it works much better is most cases.

@MrZomg132 you only have to use AA at low resolutions, hig resolutions solve the problem, its just about the edges of the objects, not adding effects

Well done, thank you for clearly showing how Anti-Aliasing helps make things look better.
If only my Wii had better anti-aliasing, or my TV...
theknowbody 1 year ago
@theknowbody Actually, the Wii DOES have anti-aliasing capability. Even Twilight Princess has a mild form of AA and it's a Gamecube Port.
MetroidJunkie2007 1 year ago
A TV does not have anti-aliasing, it's the graphics card in your Wii that does that. But the Wii is relatively weak compared to the PS3 or 360.
