I can't stop watching night after night.... The band playing in a different time signature is just killer. Whomever thought to put that camera up there has done a service.
I have to say that once you look at the whole body of works Danny Carey has created throughout his musical career so far, you would have to say he is one of the best to have ever picked up a pair of sticks and played a drumkit.
@teejja123 want to know why danny carrey is so significantly tallented just like all. tool members? their illuminati, Danny's father is a 33rd degree FREEMASON
i've studied danny's work pretty intensely since opiate, not that i'msome authority for this reason. my impression, hopefully different than yours, is that danny's playing includes alot of intentional rule-breaking and reversals of things that a trained drummer would be taught, as if to say that the lessons are only half the importance of instruction, and that the other half is knowing what not to do and doing it anyway, and making it work.

as a drummer for over 17 years, trained in jazz drumming so im used to irregular, uncommon time signatures, and polyrhythms being my specialties......but it took me over a YEAR to perfect this polyrhthm....he must have been born with a metronome in his head
The Eulogy Polyrhythm at about 6:30 is harder then this one, but its not about how hard it is..... you just have to think how could anyone think of this kinda shit its so much math!
there is no other drummer with this much precision and power...there are other drummers, with more precision, but no one can do things this intricate and complex with that much force...you take a brain surgeon mix him with a professional wrestler/martial arts master and give him a pair of drums sticks and you get Mr. Jesus H. Polyrhythm
@gonzomaniac71 haake has amazing hands please stop worshipping drummers like if they were superior to all anymore. I'm a big fan of both (Haake and Carey) and believe me they are very skilled you just can't compare.
@gonzomaniac71 ya i agree, while both drummers try to stay in the odd ends of the rhythm thomas haake does use alot of double bass while hes doing his polyrhythms, even danny carey said himself his double bass is his weakness. but ya, danny's 4 way coordination to me atleast is better than thomas haake, but thomas haake also explores different aspects of music than carey, it's more progressive rock with carey and heavy metal polyrhythms with haake. both are my favorite drummers so whatever
Tool songs are only hard to learn and in my experience playing as many different types of music i can comes with a vast realm of ways to build and play beats
ya ive played drums for a while and i barely noticed that
ive been learning this song and it might be the toughest song sice he alters it there are other videos of this song and he moves the tom rolls around too, it makes it so hard
To be honest, I kind of read your comment as the video was loading, then right away saw what you meant and your right. However, it still sounds good and works - he certainly has 2 different ways to do the beat conciously. When I said "in your opinion...", it was because you sounded like you're saying it's a must to have the coninuous high hat hit after the snare hit. It does make it sound a little better & more impressive, not that impressive is important in music.

There's a part like this in Aenima that a drummer friend of mine always loved playing, although would make painful faces while keeping the beat.

In your opinion there "should be 2 or 3 more taps on the high hat after each snare hit giving a continuous ripple effect throughout the beat."
Boxcutter7 2 years ago
@Pgrantham OMG I thought I was the only one who noticed that and I dont even play drums. I guess its easier to play the way he does in this video.
