  • Perfect, but for me the defintive performance belongs to Barbra

  • I'm delighted that ever since Sunset and Patti refusing to sing his music again, she's gone through a golden period of her career with astonishing performances as she worked her way through the Sondheim repertoire and received every single theatrical award for Gypsy on Broadway. Go Patti!

  • I love Betty Buckley as Norma...I saw all of t hem and my fave is Betty...Patti and Glenn have such powerful command of their voices as well, however..I just happen to Like Betty :)

  • ... oh, and I found out that LuPone and other actresses have dressed the same way Glenn has for her Tony Awards performance n_n

  • I think this'll explain why I mainly thought the way I did about LuPone - Patti LuPone - As If We Never Said Goodbye By Username: katemuffinn. LuPone's actually extremely good o.o I've seen a couple more of her performances :') I understand what you're saying NeuwirthFan (Glenn=Movie Star, LuPone=Theatre Actress) =) I didn't look at the bigger picture of LuPone's whole career -.-

  • @NeuwirthFan So evil T.T I was just saying because I liked the fact that Close looked so well (oldish but "wealthily" youthful and... wealthy :P ), had to act out at the beginning of her performance before singing and interacted with a few of the people up there, she had good voice and sounded to be on que considering all the expressions she made, etc etc... just saying -.-

  • @popaleechee Yes, I understand and I'm not saying that she was horrible. She was good but I would prefer LuPone's version.

  • @NeuwirthFan Aha! This is different from what you said so rudely before! "I would prefer LuPone's version" is decidedly NOT how you chose to respond to @popaleechee yesterday when you suggested that that user "go learn about real art and theater."

  • @SuperMonahan Cause that was a rude comment and I replied it with another rude comment. Patti's always better than Glenn (so far) because Patti's a stage actress and Glenn is a movie actress. I dont think that guy knew that.

  • @NeuwirthFan Don't why you took criticism to Ms. LuPone's performance to be rude. Get a thicker skin. Patti certainly has one.

  • I LOVE how she totally gets WAY ballsy on "an this will be bigger and brighter than we knew it." She's the only Norma who has been able to hit those notes. In fact, she's the only Norma to sing the entire score in its original keys. Patti is fantastic.

  • This chick's a little ahead of the play ._. and sounds a bit odd at times o.o Glenn's appearance though looks so well for this piece + sounds perfect =)

  • @popaleechee go learn about real art and theater and let go of hollywood...

patti's always better than glenn, that's a fact.

  • @NeuwirthFan Let's let someone have an opinion of their own, shall we? I'm a big Patti fan, and while I prefer her performance of the song to Glenn Close's, the truth is that Glenn Close's take on Norma Desmond is much truer to Gloria Swanson, or are you suggesting that Patti's Norma is superior to Swanson's as well?

  • @SuperMonahan Gloria Swanson's Norma was perfect but you cannot compare Swanson's Norma with Close and LuPone's cause what Swanson did was in the movie and come on who can compare movie acting with stage acting? But between Close and LuPone, I would prefer LuPone's version. You're saying what Close did was something similar to Swanson's but she can't do that in theater.

  • @NeuwirthFan What school of acting are you coming from that gives you license to make such definitive and irrational statements? You're saying that absolutely no comparisons can be made between stage and film performances whatsoever. While they are indeed different mediums, acting is still acting. And when it comes to Sunset Blvd, Gloria Swanson's Norma is one of the most theatrical performances ever captured on film! LuPone's Norma is much more understated- an odd choice for the theatre.

  • @SuperMonahan Exactly. You cannot make any comparisons between the movie acting the stage acting. Acting is to make someone believe that you're THAT person but movie and stage acting approaches this very differently so yes indeed no comparisons. They may be talking about the same thing but they are different. Also my statements are not irrational, they are correct for me and probably half of the world so if you don't agree with it you have no right to judge it and define it that way.

  • @NeuwirthFan There's no use even arguing with such a staunch and uneducated perspective on acting.

  • @SuperMonahan Have you ever thought that you have no respect for what people think? You don't know everything and what you say is not always true, please remember that. Have some respect and try to understand what people think. What you're doing IS rude not mine, I'm not some random person who doesn't know a thing about acting and theater so try to look at things at another prespective.

  • @NeuwirthFan This is just plain silly at this point. I have plenty of respect for what other people think. You're the one who has proven incapable of dialogue, and incapable of seeing any other point of view. I've tried to sanely communicate the reasons why YOUR attack of another user was uncalled for, and why someone might prefer Glenn Close to Patti LuPone. You've spewed nonsense and then tried to claim the higher ground. Look at your first post and then apply your words to yourself.

  • @SuperMonahan If you look at my first post, you can clearly see that I'm expressing my thoughts against the other people's comments so if you don't agree with it, please don't interfere with it or simply say "I don't agree with it" without making this a youtube fight which wasted (and keeps on wasting) both of our times. You prefer Close and I prefer LuPone, that is it.

  • I can't find any download of her singing this song, on iTunes or otherwise. It's a shame, I really really like her rendition the best. :(

  • dont even pretend Patti isnt as good as Glenn close...acting and vocal ability are BOTH superior to Glenn......not a question....not bashing Glenn, just say Lupone is FAR FAR better

  • She takes it way too fast and doesn't quite capture the reclusiveness of Glenn Close's. I love Patti Lupone but not everything is for and she needs to get that straight.

  • @Zroetter94 She sings the lines too "flat" compared to Glenn Close who acts the song more , this sounds like she couldn't wait to finish the song and lacks the emotion.

  • As much as I like her version (its really intense), I actually kind of like Chris Colfer's version better...the slower version makes it sound so much more like the singer's reminiscing about things...and sadder, actually....she sounds rather psychotic here, but I know Norma's supposed to be rather desperate and not quite in the right mind frame....so brilliant performance, but I think I'll stick to the calm one for the repeats =)

  • She certainly conveys the triumph but misses the underlying fear implicit in the song.

  • @eyedelon

Brillantly put. Patti sang the hell out of Sunset, but I never fully believed her as Norma. I love hearing her sing it to this day, but I think others "acted" the role better. Just different interpretations, and I love comparing them all. They all have their good qualities.

  • Just amazing..what else can one say? Viva Patti! :)

  • Is the outfit left over from "Evita"?

  • I can listen to Patti's rendition on repeat. Absolutely brilliant.

  • i love her.

  • As much as I love Chris Colfer's version of this - he took the song he killed it, and he made it fit his character and his story and his journey - Patti will always be, quite simply, the best. And I think Chris would agree with me.

  • She basically bitch slapped Chris Colfer and the Glee fanbitches. Patti, you go girl!

  • Patti is fantastic. Here, "and this time will be bigger and brighter than we knew it"....is in the basement and SHE CAN HIT IT SQUARE ON. All other actresses "talk-sing" that part and throw it away. Patti is still the only actress who can sing this ORIGINAL score with NO key changes...especially the ORIGINAL With One Look.

  • @lcowles WRONG. Linda Balgord and Ann Crumb sang the role in Patti's key.

  • @emlodik Sorry. They didn't. I listened to a clip of Balgord right here on YouTube and she sings the version with the modulation in With One Look.

  • @lcowles Now how about you stick your head out of Pattil LuPone's ass and listen to it again? :)

  • This was the version that chris colfer did.... love patti and chris xxx

  • I like the way glen close acts it not only sings it... patti sings it only....

  • i wonder how much these performances outside of broadway is acting and how much is expressionistic singing? Seems she is singing it pretty straight here, especially compared with Paige. I bet she is like a God in Palm Springs with all those old gays! Deservedly so.

  • She crushes every role she sings, from Evita to Mrs. Lovett. Viva LuPone!

  • Stunning!! Patti truly captures the desperation & the madness better than any of the other Norma's.

  • I have been searching for this for months! Thank you!

Is there a place to buy this performance on dvd?

  • Ms. LuPone at her best. Brava

  • I can tell why she would want to sing this song again even with all the drama attached to it. The song itself is beautiful, and it's not the song's fault that Andrew Lloyd Webber screwed her over.

  • Any chance they'll ever play this on TV ever again?

  • this had to have been before or during her run because i highly doubt she'd do this after that ehole debacle.

  • @dudewheresmydignity this was taped around 2001, way after her run and way after the show closed on b'way. i've seen her do this show several times and it's he only song she does from sunset

  • @NewNickTahoe wow. i can't believe she does it. good for her.

  • @NewNickTahoe Sad, I wish she'd do "With One Look."

  • @dudewheresmydignity yeahh, I thought it was a bit odd. I read her memoir again recently and she said that Scott Wittman (or Marc Shaiman) wanted her to do it at a concert after she'd comeback from London. She's so brave.

  • @dudewheresmydignity She mentions in her memoir how she had to be convinced to do it. It was and is one of her signatures. She hesitantly agreed.

  • @dudewheresmydignity what debacle?

  • @dudewheresmydignity

WAY after, but a song that she still nails and is know for ...
