Love this tune. It made me go buy the "Live from 6A" CD. Which also has the wonderful Edwyn Collins' song, A Girl Like You. Sadly, both of these song remind me of an ex-love of mine. Too bad she was bound and determined to go into the darkness.
I really like to know what kind of man did she leave JoJo for? Ik mean, why? Are there any cuter guys than him around? An where are they hiding, for Gods sake.
i saw him a few weeks ago in philly at a church. the only thing bad about it was the audience. it was packed with artsy kids. all the men had beards and horn-rimmed glasses. all the girls had short hair and plaid shirts. they were all swaying, not dancing, and i couldn't see him a bit. but his commentaries in every song were really great, and it's best to record it when you're there, cause you'll never get the same recording twice.
@artfuldodgeress I hear you. Scenesters, hipsters, art fags whatever you want to call them with their 'ironic' style seem to miss the actual irony that if you dress like everybody else in your cozy little tight-knit group, your effort to be 'different' is surely somewhat undermined ( "Congratulations, on assembling that lovely uniform.") Too harsh? I guess most of them are just kids. Even still, someone had to say it! Suffice to say, it is important to incorporate your own sense of style too.
@artfuldodgeress this comment makes you sound really silly, and quite frankly, dumb. You're gaging your enjoyment from a show off of what an audience looks and dresses like? Arty kids and adults have been digging Richman since the early 70's. Fuck, Richman was friends with the artiest snobs in music history (Velvet Underground). You're not the first and certainly will not be the last person to love JR. Just chillax, and listen to music because you like it, not because you think it's cool to like
@extremelybusy123 Thank you for taking the time to help me in life, being extremely busy and all. I don't get the impression that artfuldodgeress has the views that you rather hastily endowed her with. I think she was commenting more on the fact that she found herself, somewhat unfortunately, in a roomful of fashion clones. This can be a bit painful at times, as can any measure of "swaying". Besides, she was only lightly mocking. I believe everybody should be made fun of equally! Chillax.
@PhilErup2000000 No problem Phil. I care about my fellow youtubers... kind of, actually not really at all. For some reason certain elitists think they were the first, and should be the last people to discover good music. I thrive on positive vibes. I like Richmond, Lady Gaga, Prince and Fugazi. I saw Prince a few years back, and the entire crowd was fat black women. Winning. If no one is dancing and wearing skinny jeans, then roll up in come parachute pants and dance. Don't whine about it.
@extremelybusy123 I agree with you--both music elitists and haters are so very tiring. If haters have a purpose it is hopefully that, through their mindless vitriolic attacks, they make others strive to be their polar opposites! And yet in the spirit of sociology (apposed to boring political correctness), it's fun to delve into the finer points of group behaviour in a relatively non-malicious way, as I believe artfuldogeress did. Incidently, I,too, like to 'spread the love' whenever I can! Peace.
i think he's doing the singing, rhythm and lead live, as well as the drummer live, with a backing track to follow along with (with the backup vocals and such... so no he's not lip syncing, the mics just keep dropping out leaving only the little chorus in the background...
is he lip syncing? it looks like there was a technical issue at 0:44, where you stop hearing the lyrics but his lips still move. although, i guess the mic could have just cut out.
P.S. (days later): I find myself singing this in my Josh Groban voice - I can see him doing a cover of it, if only to hear him sing, "...better take those sheets/To the old laundromat..."!
Jonathan is great, but too many of his records, and especially too many of his live performances, are under-produced or marred by bouts of silliness. This video towers above most others in that it is neither under- nor over-produced and has none of those departures into silliness. He also looks good and sings pretty well.
Actually none of it is prerecorded.. The other instruments and vocals are performed by the shows backup band, Max Weinberg and the Max Weinberg 7.. Show is from july 28th '95..
I believe, jkasof, that the "darkness" where the sound disappears is metaphorical, and entirely planned. First of all, the voice background continues on during the silence -- so it's not a board crap-out, or something, plus there's the fact that on a show like Late Night they'd do a retake if something like that happened.
