  • Love this tune. It made me go buy the "Live from 6A" CD. Which also has the wonderful Edwyn Collins' song, A Girl Like You. Sadly, both of these song remind me of an ex-love of mine. Too bad she was bound and determined to go into the darkness.

  • i luv jonathan. seen him live five times. but he just doesn't come across in these yt videos. I don't know why. so much better in person

  • he makes painful things seems joyous

  • Magical!! Think Jonathans guitar playing should be more recognised. An AWESOME entertainer.

  • Of course shes taking drugs what did you expect? Yeah shes probably facedown in a pile of her own vomit by now

  • Haha, Jonathan I love you.

  • When that guitar kicks in my skin reacts!!! The best song Ive rediscovered for years!!

  • man i love his choice of guitars

  • I really like to know what kind of man did she leave JoJo for? Ik mean, why? Are there any cuter guys than him around? An where are they hiding, for Gods sake.

  • Dam, this version compared to the version I saw him do. Anybody remember what he did?

  • i saw him a few weeks ago in philly at a church. the only thing bad about it was the audience. it was packed with artsy kids. all the men had beards and horn-rimmed glasses. all the girls had short hair and plaid shirts. they were all swaying, not dancing, and i couldn't see him a bit. but his commentaries in every song were really great, and it's best to record it when you're there, cause you'll never get the same recording twice.

  • @artfuldodgeress I hear you. Scenesters, hipsters, art fags whatever you want to call them with their 'ironic' style seem to miss the actual irony that if you dress like everybody else in your cozy little tight-knit group, your effort to be 'different' is surely somewhat undermined ( "Congratulations, on assembling that lovely uniform.") Too harsh? I guess most of them are just kids. Even still, someone had to say it! Suffice to say, it is important to incorporate your own sense of style too.

  • @PhilErup2000000 Hey Phil, read my comment below to artfuldodgeress. I think it will help you in life.

  • @artfuldodgeress this comment makes you sound really silly, and quite frankly, dumb. You're gaging your enjoyment from a show off of what an audience looks and dresses like? Arty kids and adults have been digging Richman since the early 70's. Fuck, Richman was friends with the artiest snobs in music history (Velvet Underground). You're not the first and certainly will not be the last person to love JR. Just chillax, and listen to music because you like it, not because you think it's cool to like

  • Not to mention you have have the user name "artfuldodgeress." Apparently someone wants to tell the world that they are "artsy."

  • @extremelybusy123 Thank you for taking the time to help me in life, being extremely busy and all. I don't get the impression that artfuldodgeress has the views that you rather hastily endowed her with. I think she was commenting more on the fact that she found herself, somewhat unfortunately, in a roomful of fashion clones. This can be a bit painful at times, as can any measure of "swaying". Besides, she was only lightly mocking. I believe everybody should be made fun of equally! Chillax.

  • @PhilErup2000000 No problem Phil. I care about my fellow youtubers... kind of, actually not really at all. For some reason certain elitists think they were the first, and should be the last people to discover good music. I thrive on positive vibes. I like Richmond, Lady Gaga, Prince and Fugazi. I saw Prince a few years back, and the entire crowd was fat black women. Winning. If no one is dancing and wearing skinny jeans, then roll up in come parachute pants and dance. Don't whine about it.

  • @extremelybusy123 I agree with you--both music elitists and haters are so very tiring. If haters have a purpose it is hopefully that, through their mindless vitriolic attacks, they make others strive to be their polar opposites! And yet in the spirit of sociology (apposed to boring political correctness), it's fun to delve into the finer points of group behaviour in a relatively non-malicious way, as I believe artfuldogeress did. Incidently, I,too, like to 'spread the love' whenever I can! Peace.

  • I'm going to climb up on the roof, smoke a joint, and look at the stars now. Life is simple.

  • I once Googled an internet ad for a business for sale.

  • damn man, lovely song!...

  • one of my heroes

  • sweetest voice. in my top ten!

  • "The fool who persists in his folly becomes wise"...That is what Jonathan is saying.

  • Let that b*tch go, well be alright!

  • Great Song

  • I am not sure if his mic cuts out or someone has dubbed a CD over the video. I do not think he is lip-syncing though.

  • i think he's doing the singing, rhythm and lead live, as well as the drummer live, with a backing track to follow along with (with the backup vocals and such... so no he's not lip syncing, the mics just keep dropping out leaving only the little chorus in the background...

  • love it :)))

  • Comment removed

  • is he lip syncing? it looks like there was a technical issue at 0:44, where you stop hearing the lyrics but his lips still move. although, i guess the mic could have just cut out.

  • think there is a backing track going on with bass, backing guitar and keys.

  • Onan O'Brian show. Jojo tops as ever. Still a great show in 2009 - go see and enjoy!

  • Just saw jojo and tommy this past Wednesday. Great show from them...

  • right on, he's still as animated as he was back then. Jonathan is my hero!

  • He's just another singer. And I wish there was more singers like him around! Rare case? It needn't to be. LET'S GO LET'S GO!

    MUCH RESPECT!

  • something about mary haha

  • Nope, this is not a joke. Jonathan Richman is awesome

  • No joke, just a great musician

  • Laundromat, Laundromat.........

  • Comment removed

  • awesome work.

  • weniximo!!!!

  • oops... 'THEM sheets..."

  • Now THAT'S groovin'. . . 'specially the lead work!!

  • P.S. (days later): I find myself singing this in my Josh Groban voice - I can see him doing a cover of it, if only to hear him sing, "...better take those sheets/To the old laundromat..."!

  • He's definately a charmer, but what's up with those legs?

  • this song really helped with my break up

  • Wow, fantastic! Thanks for putting this up. I just saw him tonight in London and he was great, so charismatic

  • The Godfather of Punk (look it up).

  • LOVE this song his voice is luscious :P

    very nice song...and lyrics :P

  • Thanks for this video. I just became a fan!

  • This is the best thing I've seen in a while.

  • He is the best live show around. His silliness is what makes his live shows so great.

  • your not a jonathn richman fan

  • its marred by silliness for the same reason dylan's songs are marred with imagery...

  • I've done a bit of research (yes, I AM that sad! haha) - It's an Epiphone Emperor Regent!

  • i love his guitars!

    now if onnly i had £500 -.-

  • I've always loved this song, and this is a great performance!

And that guitar is beautiful!! Can't get enough of Epiphones! Thanks for posting this.

  • 2:52 :D .... LOL :) I love it

  • Thanks for uploading this. This is the first version I ever heard/saw back in the day and it is still my favorite. Just perfect.

  • great great song!

  • Actually none of it is prerecorded.. The other instruments and vocals are performed by the shows backup band, Max Weinberg and the Max Weinberg 7.. Show is from july 28th '95..

  • his voice is almost too perfect

  • Who´s the invisible second guitar player...?

  • This is fun!

  • Let her go into the darkness ...

  • awesome!!!

  • Superior production quality (except a couple momentary glitches). Also he sings better on this than on the other versions.

  • I believe, jkasof, that the "darkness" where the sound disappears is metaphorical, and entirely planned. First of all, the voice background continues on during the silence -- so it's not a board crap-out, or something, plus there's the fact that on a show like Late Night they'd do a retake if something like that happened.

  • Well, the voice background is prerecorded. So is the second guitar

  • Let her go baby let her go...

  • ohhh mann that sounds so great

    excelent song

  • You did it again! Awesome!!

  • .) super!
