@PVPaven Do you have a source for that or are you trolling? I've been listening to Tom Waits for 15 years and I know it says in the LP/CD that Waits wrote this just as it does everywhere else, and it says pretty much everywhere the Screamin Jay Hawkins version appears that it's a Tom Waits cover. As far as I know (and accordning to Wikipedia) SJH - who's done at least a couple of other Waits covers - didn't do this until his 1994 album "Somethin' Funny Goin' On".
@Blodhosta Someone wrote; "From the 1972 compilation album 'Portrait Of A Man' [Edsel Records]. a great album full of Hawkins' hit tunes and more" Portrait Of A Man is from 1995....
I'm really disappointed by how held back Jay Hawkins is for this!! Half the fun of the original song is how crazy Tom got with the singing, -which is something I'm almost SURE he did by taking cues from Screaming Jay Hawkins from his glory days!
I wish Jay could've covered this when he was in his prime.
honestly this is kind of disappointing. This song is perfect for S. Jay to cover. I think he could do a lot with the musical genius of Tom Waits. I just dont see Screamin Jay having as much fun with this as he could.... I know hes a better performer than that. I want to hear him scream and whine and cry. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to start my own career as a singer so I can do things the way I think they should be done.
From the album "Something Funny Going On" produced by the late Buddy Blue, featuring members of Buddy's Band. Buddy got tons of video of Jay acting outrageously during the sessions.
Even though most folks state 'I put a spell on you' as his trademark song,Screamin' Jay Hawkins made this a fine gem & it suits him perfectly.Nice to hear this one again.
Just curiosity..Is this the original song or it´s the Tom waits' one ? Both are great!!!

There were a couple things that occurred during those hard years that were better than the rest of it. One thing was discovering this song,,,,,,,,
