This is how I like Jennifer Hudson .. she's great with this old school stuff. Unfortunately she probably feels she needs to compete with all the other divas out there, so we get her doing autotuned, thowaway r and b. It's a shame, because she's a terrific vocalist in the old tradition.
Saw stevie perform at the Special Olympics concert a few months ago and his voice, range, keyboard playing, etc.... was just as strong and perhaps even better now (2011) than it's ever been! Hasn't lost a thing! I think this version of "All In Love Is Fair" was pretty good but Stevie sounded a bit tired. He's done MUCH better concerts since this performance. He is by-far my #1 favorite artist, singer, songwriter, humanitarian, of all time.
I love Dionne and really that was a beautiful performance, the one at Cabaret! YOu should also should check Nancy Wilson performance. But this one really got me surprised! Even Stevie, after a little instigation, surrendered in face of the powerfull voice of this girl.
When you sing your own song and its already #1 you can sing it anyway you want...backwards an in pig latin... because anybody that disagrees..just pass them the mic! and give them the look like..you do better!
Uff, Stevie is amazing! Its amazing how good he singing still!!!... I am a singer and I just hope that when I am that age, that I am able to sing this good!... Great performance but both, him and Hudson! :D
@hiddenmgr i agree if you are referring to the RnB world. Now if you were talking about in general....I think Twinkie Clark or Karen Clark Sheard might have him beat.
@hiddenmgr Yep!! Twinkie is as good as Karen with her runs. Listen to the Endow Me battle between Dorinda and Karen and see how Twinkie's runs are lol very good if i may say so myself
@hiddenmgr I like to think that Stevie invented it, someone should've told her. And it's funny how 30 years ago folks talked bad about him for running.
@utube1227 I agree. I don't like this version either. Jennifer sang really low like the key wasn't right for her. And it seemed Stevie anticipated some magic from her. When it never came, he forced her to go off script at the end but it just didn't work. She made a decent recovery though. Christina Aguilera kills at improvisation. She would've been perfect for this. Fantasia too.
@AnnaMaeBullock CA is HORRIBLE at improvisation. It's repetitive, offkey, out of the meter, it's not rooted or based on anything specifically musical. She's just throwing her voice around randomly hoping it'll do something. Fantasia would have definitely worked though.
@Chimier You're right about CA being" out of the meter, not rooted or bases on anything..and throwing her voice around randomly hoping it'll do something" - a very accurate description, BTW! But despite that, she wouldn't have shied away from the challenge, is the point, I guess. In fact, she should would've run all over the song.
@Chimier do You like runs being done by Stevie or Brian McKnight?
Of course they're not as bad as Christina's but also make one feel kind of dizzy. Sometimes I wish they just sang the damn song straight. Brian's voice is so nice, it doesn't need additional ornaments
@utube1227 Stevie slippin?...you really must be "smokin' lovely"...Stevie is over 60 years old but to show YOU how great Stevie is, the key of this song was in a higher key than when originally recorded...I'm sure this was done so Jennifer could sing the lower notes..Stevie still hits the high notes with ease....Slippin'?...Dude!!!!!
@ohioplayer He did screw up in the beginning n a few other times - But for anyone to focus on that is just cynical to terrible extremes. Stevie is one of the most talented ppl to ever live. Back in the day the only time he screwed up waqs forgetting a lyric - Most artists have a great album.. a great song.. stevie has about 50 great songs. No one can take that away with a dumb comment about how he missed a note..
@KMatteKudasaiC He has had to transpose this from the original key.. When you do a song for over 35 odd years in the key that is most comfortable for you then all of a sudden do it in an entirely new arrangement , it does throw you a bit.....He is playing this in a key that suits her range, not his......
@philster611 I was wondering what was up because age and shit don't matter Stevie's always on point he's too good. People are making some pretty cruel assumptions and they just don't add up. Are they singing it higher or lower?
@cyclops1092 This version is two notes up from the original. It is indeed nothing to do with age, Stevie first sung this song when he was in his early twenties. It has a very complex chord arrangement and I can imagine Stevie having to do it in another key when you've been doing it in the same key for nearly 40 years..Of course that doesn't take away from the fact that Stevie is a genius.
@cyclops1092 Yes, me too. When Michael Jackson passed away, I was sad and when Stevie performed at hos memorial, it was poignant to see how shocked he was. Michael was his protege. And I'm sure nobody felt his loss ore profoundly then Stevie. Dare I say it, when Stevie's time is upon us, I will be totally devastated........

What a thrill for Jennifer to sing with him and then hear him so excited that she was singing his song. It had to be a huge moment for her.

have the playful rivalry that these two had at the end.
