@overlordspencerman They are all great but the Land Rovers really do not have the massive advantage that some people have been brainwashed to believe. I was nearly brainwashed but Jeep saved me. G-wagon, Wrangler and Defender Forever.
Looking at the vid again, there's also some naughtiness involved, the LR3 going up a well-worn snowless track on the hill while the pinzes (which are at the top of the hill when the LR3 goes up) go a different route. Nice propaganda..
You are right, Pinz goes other way. Pinz possibility you can watch in my vid Pinz 4x4 vs 6x6. I came on my LR to shoot Pinz and just tried to do the same. Nobody (5 off-road sportsmen) believed that LR with highway tires could climb that hill. Not a propaganda, just amusement.
I've been off-roading with LR3s and they rarely do particularly well, however the electronic aids can be useful. Their weight, ground clearance and ramp-over angles are the biggest let-down. Most of the time my Defender 110 does better, let alone my pinzgauer. There are plenty of times though when a disadvantage in one place become an advantage in another which is why there's no "best" when it comes to off-roading.
I also have a 110 and have driven an LR3 - over big rocks etc the Defender is king but on slippery surfaces traction control makes all the difference. of course some Defenders also have traction control now and with big mud pluggers they are almost unstoppable!!!
Yes I'd like the traction control on my Defender, but good old-fashioned diff locks do a better job most of the time. From what I've seen the traction control only works if you're revving the engine and it can be hard to control in tight situations, as controlling the truck's speed is hard when you have to rev the engine and guess when the truck's going to spin its wheels or selectively apply brakes.
Sadly Land Rover seem to have lost their roots, the Defender is all that remains and they're not really pushing that much. The LR3 and Range Rovers are very far from the Defenders and earlier vehicles. I started out owning Land Rovers but won't ever own the LR3, Range Rover, Freelanders etc as they're too embarrassing.
they eventually will have to add electronic devices to compete with other manufacturers. Unlike your experiences, there are tons of videos about new land rovers offroading and doing quite well.
Do you expect the company to survive without developing sophisticated technologies ? If they have built cars like you wanted them to be, there would be no land rover today.
A D3 or range rover has major issues with ground clearance, they can jack up suspension but can't change the lower wishbone position, their rut clearance is woeful. When I've been out with D3 or new Range Rovers they scrape their bottoms on the ground very quickly even when pumped up to their maximum. Compared to the Defenders (modern ones have traction control) and especially the Pinzgauer they don't do well unless they're driving across terrain that doesn't require decent ground clearance.
Sorry I didnt read this far down. Seems you are one of the few like me who noticed the poor clearence. So many people just jump on the Land Rover name and hail that they are the best. I drove Land Rover Defenders for 8 years but now I have a Jeep JK Unlimited CRD. Never looked back.
@HeavyChevyK10 ALL land rover LR3 's have self leveling air suspension which you can raise or lower by the turn of a knob. i have one. that lr3 simply didnt need anymore ground clearence for what it was doing. defenders are basically a better built jeep they dont have 1/3 of the technology of other land rovers. An lr3 is way out of league for ANY jeep.
@chazzy2010 Well I know how they work as my Dad has a 4.2 supercharged sport. He has had range rovers since they were first introduced. I have a jeep JK Unlimited at the moment and it pisses all over my old V8 110. I had 5 Land Rovers over a period of 8 years so have an unbiasesd opinion. Defenders are not better built than jeeps. They all have there pro's and cons. Right now I prefer the JK Wrangler over a Defender but I still Love Defenders.
Land Rover are definately losing it. Next time you see an Discovery 3/LR3 or Range Rover Sport check out the rear lower A-arm clearence. Its Horrible! The arms could have been tucked up out of the way nearer the driveshaft but there is a massive gap between the shaft and Arm which could have been used for ground clearence.
throw tonne of kit in the back of the pinz and it would have made it - they are a load carrier - not made to perform unloaded - we have to do it all the time with their predecessor the 101 landrover
There was a pinz at the top of the hill when the rover was climbing it . . .guess it must have made it. LR makes a capable product. Unfortunately it finds its way to last place in reliability surveys year after year.
yes it could. it's not a soccer mom suv. the gmc yukon is. this is a bad ass Land Rover. meant for offroading not carrying around little piss ass bratty kids who complain about everything and get whatever they want
LR3 IS A LEGAND BUT THE NEW LR4 IS WAT BETTER THAN ITS OLD MODEL I HAVE AND LR3 AND LR4 U REALLY CAN SEE THE DIFFRENCE

I own one of these Land Rovers and I must say they can do just about anything with stock tires. However do get me wrong I've really gotten it stuck.

Cracking vid and cracking motors - just out of interest go4x4 can you remember what tyres the LR3 had? Normal road or A/T or M/T? Cheers C

Actually did you realize that the LR took a
different track up the hill?
I mean look at the small trees at the
beginning of the hill. The Pinny came down
at least 4 meters away while the LR went up
directly next to them.
Well doesn't matter anyways it's all
about fun anyways, doesn't matter what
car you use.
