I can't help but remember what become of the real people... she became known as Bloody Mary, burning hundreds of people - priests & nuns included - over her heretic beliefs... while her hubby was off with numerous mistresses. She tried to keep the jerk; her mind creating several false pregnancies out of her desperation...
@KennedyFan I thougt all the false pregnancies was because of the cancer she eventually died for. And I understand what your mean; you she this people on movies, all happy, but you know how all end up :(
@KennedyFan Bloody Mary is a name given to Queen Mary by the 'heretics' that opposed the return of Catholicism (Mary wasn't a heretic herself). During Mary's reign around 300 protestants were burnt at the stake; what history forgets to add is that a similar number of Catholics were then executed under Elisabeth I, and more astoundingly throughout his reign Henry VIII had an estimated 72,000 people executed. Who really deserves to be known as 'Bloody'?
@KennedyFan As Nedesiko85 mentioned the pregnancies were not simply created. Her cancer made her stomach swell and it looked as if she was pregnant of which time she was also going through menopause. Her doctors even told her she was pregnant. So, dont judge her. As to her husband, she was in love with him and believed he could do no wrong..
@EmeraldEyes17 If the director/producers knew better they would have included more Philip/Mary scenes. The real Duke returned to England just once more to try and win Mary's hand-I wish they had included that in the script.
Yeah, Sarah Bolger is very beautiful. But there is a strange mistake. Duke Philip of Bavaria never existed. There was only a Philip William of Bavaria who was Bishop of Regensburg and later cardinal. But he was born 18 years after Mary had died. So this relationship is a total fiction. She had only one man in her life, Philip II. King of Spain. He was her one and only love.
You're right in there being only one Duke of Barvaria named Philip, however Mary did have another Philp in her life: Count Palatine Philipp the Warlike, he was the younger brother of Otto Heinrich, Elector Palatine of the Rhine.
This relationship isn't fictional at all, the only parts that are probably out of context is Phillip's relation to Anne of Cleves, and Mary's feelings for him! Phillip most certainly existed, and he was engaged to Mary, but was thirteen years older than her. The cardinal you mentioned above was his uncle, and wasn't a very nice man!
As for Phillip of Spain... Mary would have been better off with the one from Bavaria!
Actually Philip of Bavaria did exist and did dare to kiss Mary at some point of their courtship...when their courtship was indeed terminated by Henry after some time I don't recall if it was a few months or years. He once again returned to ask for her hand...I'm not sure how the rejection occured but they never got married and there are few publications if you look up the true history of the tudors you will find bits of their romance. They would have made a wondefrful couple based on the prints.
@Gabbycrts It's Colin O'Donoghue. You may know him from the Rite. He pays Fr. Micheal Kovak. Lol and i totally agree with you ,,, I was a fan since he played in the band The Enemies in Drogheda.
This is a much better match than Mary's own cousin Phillip.

@Theoneenchanted She never got a chance to reply. Henry, wanting to be rid of the Cleves alliance, terminated the relationship completely.
