@Oohzmonkey They were ,infact. The Tamil people you speak of indeed lived there for centuries, but the tea plantation workers were brought to Sri Lanka by the British from Tamil Nadu in India. Those that live and work on plantations today are descendants of this labour brought in.
why are these indian coolies called tamil? In all other countries the indian coolies were brought to such as Malaysia, Burma and South Africa they are known as Indian.

@arnotkaling Tamils have lived in Sri Lanka since around the 2nd century BCE...so, as such, they were not 'brought to' Sri Lanka as manual labourers.
