What memories. I grew up in Boston, but always enjoyed finding the Detroit and Chicago broadcasts on the AM dial after dark. I was also able to pull in Rangers, Whalers, and Devils games. Bruce Martyn puts the yellers and screamers who do the announcing today to complete and absolute shame. What memories.
I knew Bruce having covered the Blues for many years. But if you really wanted to hear an old time classic great announcer, his predecessor Bud Lynch was awesome.
@DeeDonner ...funny i was at this game also , i stayed over night to get tickets at olympia , ted lindsay let everyone in the stadium that night cuz it was cold and it was a all night crazy party in there , cant forget locheads goal , i ended up getting tickets in the old wing hi's ..3rd deck on one end of the arena
I haven't heard Bruce Martyn's voice in years. How great to hear it again. What an exciting year it was, with the Wings only playoff appearance between 1970 and 1984. Thanks for posting this!!
@m1sterhockey Bruce Martyn's superb play-by-play, equally great analyst work by Sid Abel, Budd Lynch on Olympia's PA, Art Quattro at the organ, and 16,000 Hockeytown fans. As good as it gets.
My God!!! This is why you become a fan of hockey. Hearing the gasp of the crowd....the great announcing of Bruce Martin and the squeak when he yelled Score!!!!
I used to love when the sun went down earlier so I could catch the Wings, Hawks, and Blues on my radio so I could listen to Dan Kelly, Bruce Martin, and Pat Foley to go with my own beloved voice of the North Stars Al Shaver.
How could you not be a fan of this great sport after hearing this!!!

The Lochead goal, yes! The greatest goal of all time for the Wings! Does anyone have anything on it? Video or Audio. Anything! I wish I could see that and have it for all time!
Yeah , you're right , I forgot about the short series back in those days . But the play that ticked me off that day and to me i thought that changed the momentum of the game was when our goalie Dan Bouchard ( he loved to roam out the net a lot like Billy Smith did ) came out to play the puck and gave it right to a Redwing player who put it into a empty net , cause Bouchard was so far out the net and that play is what killed us and the changed the series . At least in my opinion .
I think that was Hextall's shorthanded goal in the first period. For a long-suffering Wings fan, this season was the first in the playoffs since 1970 so it's somewhat savored by those of us who were going to the games back then. Virtually the only highlight in a very bleak run.
As a Atlanta Flames fan I remember that series very well . We got swept in 3 games ( best of 5 first round in those days ) , I went to game 3 and the Wings did outhit us to which I was suprised , cause I really thought we had the size , but it was Dale McCourt's and Reed Larson's speed that killed us !
Atlanta still has never won an NHL playoff game. The Thrashers lost to the Rangers 4-0 a few years ago in their only playoff appearance. The Flames had some decent teams in Atlanta, but were always swept...4 straight vs Philly in 74 QF, swept in 2 by the Wings in '78 and swept in 2 by the Leafs in the Preliminary Round of '79. I think they got swept by the Blackhawks 3-0 in 1980, and then moved to Calgary...What a concept, moving an NHL team from the states to Canada...someone tell Bettman.
@vidlivs Actually, the Atlanta Flames won TWO playoff games during their history. In '74, they got swept by Philadelphia in four straight. In '76, they were swept by the L.A. Kings. The following year, they won their first playoff game, but still lost to the Kings, 2 games to 1. The next two years, '78 and '79, they were swept in two straight by Detroit and Toronto, respectively. Then in 1980, they won game 3 against the New York Rangers, but ultimately lost the series, 3-1.
Awesome vid, Mr. Bowlng. This was my first year as a die hard Wings fan at the age of 8 & it brings back some incredible memories. Sad to say Ken Daniels doesn't come close to Bruce...I just wish the Wings could've won more during the Martyn years. Olympia was & still is the grandest arena in all of sport and will neverbe duplicated. I remember watching this game on TV 50. If anyone has a VHS or even Beta recording of ANY Wings games from this era, please PM me - I would love to get a copy,
@mrbowling300 Sure hopr you do.I would pay for some of the Bruce and Sid games .Any one remember the Wings hreatening to fire Sid for calling Huber a sissy on air? Ha Sid was the best......Thanks beyond words for this minute and thirty two.....
Remember watching Ken Daniels doing sports for CBLT, Toronto. CBC's Toronto affiliate before working as a play-by-play man. You're right though, modern sportscasters can't compare to the greats of yesteryear. Some great hockey announcers back then, Martyn in Detroit, Foster Hewitt in Toronto and Ted Darling in Buffalo were legendary...Dan Kelly was also terrific, he did Blues games. Danny Gallivan in Montreal, Fred Cusick in Boston.. Bill the Whistle Chadwick for the Rangers...great announcers.
RIP Bruce Martyn.

Think about that, in the past 27 years, the Wings have only missed the playoffs twice, and have a playoff streak of what? 20 years now?! Incredible.
