What the hell does freedom of speech have to do with this, I don't want to hire someone and foot the medical bills for their ass because they find it necessary to poison themselves.
@trippinlikegod I wouldn't hire an obese person personally because yes, they cost too much and they have complete control over that.
your forgetting, I own the business, not you, if you don't like my business then don't shop there, but don't sit there and think you can dictate what I do with my money.
@Dethreid Maybe you should put a sign up at your business that says "Discrimination Against Employees Encouraged" so people will know not to shop there. While you're at it don't hire Jews either, I hear they cost more money taking fake religious holidays on the company dollar.
First off were talking obesity here not being overweight, overweight has a minuscule risk to their long term health.
Secondly, do you have any idea how much a business is going to be on the hook for when their employee gets diagnosed with cancer KNOWING the chances of it happening are HUGE.
Third, I wouldn't deny employment because of some persons religion or ethnicity, but they are going be using vacation time to celebrate it.
@Dethreid The chances of getting cancer are huge even if you don't smoke. I can compare those because religion is a choice much like weight and whether or not you smoke. Unless your business happens to be selling insurance and the employee happens to be a customer you aren't going to be on the hook for anything more than the days they aren't at work while they are getting treated, if it's that big a deal just compassionately fire them. You aren't paying for their cancer treatments, they are.
@Dethreid Please though enlighten me to how your business will be "on the hook" for one of your employees personal health problems. Employees are out of work all the time for illnesses and none of them are your problem aside from the employee not being at work. If they don't have paid time off they don't get paid, I don't see what your position is here.
@trippinlikegod Smoking is a legal drug habit. They say quitting smoking is harder then kicking heroin. My boss (and myself) are sick of the "nic fits" of smokers. I know a guy that would go out of his office for 10 minutes and read a book. One day his supervisor asked him wtf he was doing and he simply replied "I don't smoke". The supervisor left dumbfounded, and a week later the smoking policy changed!! If I owned my own place I would try not to hire smokers either.
they already do this to people who dont do anything and 100% healthy, add your wife/husband & kids to your policy and it can cost you $500+ a month extra. which is bullshit.
This recession is a BLESSING in disguise! We Americans finally have a chance to overthrow the large corporations that run the free world – START YOUR OWN ORGANIZATION OR BUISNESS BY TAKING ADVANTAGE of the government grants that have always been available to you. -- BILLIONS of dollars waiting for you to use. . Don’t get duped into paying fees by more corporations that are trying to steam roll you yet again – this is government money that has been created by the senate for you.
When is this going to be realized as pure discrimination ... why does this country feel the need to always have a group of ppl to hate on, its even encouraged to discriminate in this way ... these numbers are a lie, think about it, its common sense, there is no way thast these numbers are correct, there is not one singe death certificate that states that smoking killed the person ... omg, this is so ignorant
"there is not one singe death certificate that states that smoking killed the person"
That is silly. Thats like arguing that no one dies of bullets, only bleedng and organ failure. If bullets took years to cause these conditions, it would be the same thing. And most people who get shot don't even die.

@Dethreid So why don't we fire all the fat people too. They're a lot more likely to cost the insurance company more money than the smokers.

They can smoke in their but if they wish... it is their life.
But making others do passive smoking is a serious crime.
