Why's everybody gotta hate on Alien 3. It was alot better that the first film which was boring as hell. I tried watching it the other day and I couldn't sit through it because it was so slow. Alien 3 had the Best acting, It was the most Dramatic, had the most realistic characters, the Soundtrack was Amazing and it had the most Epic ending in the franchise. And the alien in this movie was the scariest because it ran on all fours like a cat making it alot quicker and impossible to escape.
it wasnt better that the 1st at all but i agree it was good people hate it because they jump on the band wagon 20th century tried so hard to bin it instead of backing.
To bad the film did not live up to the soundtrack. It had some good things, but does not compare to the 2 films before it. That being said. It still is better then the films that came after it.
@Lurker1979 When I saw the movie back in the day I also thought it lacked when compared to the first 2. But I think it is a really great movie and a sleeping classic if you ask me. I think it is more bleak than the other 2 and while the prison is imense in size it retains a sense of claustrophobe because there is praticaly no technology there. And we see how ripley changed from a mere employee in the first one to this warrior women in the third. the 4th however was really really bad.
The soundtrack for this is so obviously for the original idea for Alien 3, the whole wooden world in space inhabited by monks. As crazy as that idea was I really think that'd have been an interesting concept to see on screen. I like Alien 3 but it is lacking.
So far, Mankind has found 700 additional planets out there and who knows what lays on their surface or underneath it. Might be harmless beings or things worse than Xenomorphs.
If you watch the Alien 3 commentary with Elliot Goldenthal, he describes director David FIncher's requirement for the swell of the first track, in that he wanted the viewer to know, simply by seeing the planet and hearing the score, "...that they're fucked."
I thought of a couple. I kind of like John Barry's style, basil polidouris, and Hans Zimmer. But I don't really classify them in the same category as the others.
Elliot Goldenthal, Jerry Goldsmith, Danny Elfman, James Horner, John Williams. Who else is there that screams brilliance? I love Elliot Goldenthal most for his use of brass but just as much for his unique sound. Chords on top of chords. His music is twisted in a REALLY good way. Twisted simaler to Danny Elfman twisted but different and unique. If anyone can think of any kick ass composers to add to the above list please let me know.
James Horner is a master, but I always felt Goldenthal captured the essence of the series in this score. This music is perfect at building that relentless, lurking menace and dread that is the creature in this film and merging it with the religious overtones of the prisoners.
every year, I find myself doing the same; sitting down to watch this movie, and after 15 mins, I turn it off saying "ah Ive already watched this 10 billion times". which is true. still, I start watching it each and every year. and now I know why...
this track! at the beginning. it is just perfect, I mean this is what Alien meant (and still means) to me as a child: that cold state of being alone, fearing "something" you dont understand - and this score is like a manifestation of that feeling =D
@yesledman2 No, but the big emptiness of space being infinite for all we know, our planets and stars mere atoms, galaxies being just ball of dust.
We only know about life on one dust, and even out the tiny slim chances that life is created there's still bound to be a enormous diversity but who knows what they're like.
But what's worse than life we don't know, is the barren cold empitiness, openess of space. You'll never feel more insignificant, insecure, and alone when you are out there.

this is the exact opposite of a star trek or star wars score; space is not a place of wonder and excitement. it is a place of darkness and death
