This is Tammy at her best, but it's also Billy Sherrill at his best. His background was in classical and baroque music, and it showed in the depth of layering and texture of his productions.

Sherrill had his own Nashville A-crew of pickers, and I believe they could read his mind. A Sherrill session would be a rehearsal, a take, and it would be done; then move on to the next cut.

You listen to this 42 years later, and you realize what an accomplishment that truly was.

@moproducer I don't mean to take anything away from Tammy; this won earned her a CMA Female Vocalist award, and I do mean that she earned it. If you strip this song down to its melody and lyrics, it ain't a winner...as a matter of fact, it's a poorly written song. But Tammy had a set of pipes that wouldn't quit, and I'd be willing to bet that she could belt out a killer version of Ave Maria if she had to.

What she did with the chorus sold the song, got me listening, and I've never stopped.

Woman knew her instrument VERY well. On "An Evening With Burt Reynolds" she talked about doing a McDonald's ad. The executives came to her when she finished recording, and asked where the "heartbreak" in her voice went.

She replied that they'd need to write more consonants and "H"s and "T"s into the lyrics if they wanted that.

Fact that she new what was needed to manipulate her "sound" shows a Master Craftswoman! She is sorely missed!

I was very young when Tammy Wynette first started. She is the MOST TALENTED SINGER I think I have ever heard. I still love all of her music. I saw her several times on Music Row when I worked down there. She was at a Red Light one day and I first noticed the car. It was a Lindoln Towncar and the embelm on the from fender said "Tammy Wynette Addition". Then I looked at the driver and it was her. She waved and miled. OMG! I nearly died right there at the Red Light when I realized it was her!

Modern singers could really learn a lot by studying their predecessors. I can't think of any contemporary singer who has such a complete mastery of her craft as Tammy Wynette. Rather than resorting to cheap or dishonest embellishments, Wynette's vocal style is a study in subtlety; She can raise goosebumps on your arm with a simple skeletal phrase, a plaintive whisper, or build indescribable tension and emotion with nothing more than a skillfully timed pause!
