Randy Robinson was based on the real wrestler Jake the Snake Roberts. It wasnt a totally made up movie. Rourke brings out the lunch bucket fans to his movies. He is a genious!
the reason he did well in this film was because he played himself, the story resembled that of own, being a star one day then being nothing, it brought out emotions that he really acted out with memory and experience
yes oscars do go wrong sometimes as do every awards....but wat should not happen is blunders...i dont think mickey rourke not winning was a blunder...sean penn was good as well but people can have different opinions...but when films like goodfellas n ET failed to win oscar or denzel washington not winning fr malcom X those are blunders
OSCARS, AWARDS MEAN LITTLE to the greatest actors. some of the best performances go un-recognized by these clowns. if you look at mickey's performences in barfly, rumblefish, pope of grenitch village, he gets little to zero awards. stop with he deserved an oscar for the wresteler. HE DOESN'T GIVE A SHIT IF HE WON. he's just happy to be working again. and for the love of god. stop putting so much wait in these things. if a performance is good. its good. an award shouldn't mean that much.
Long road back for a great actor. He humbled himself and worked hard, now Hollywood needs to do right by him. I haven't seen it yet but I heard he was great in Iron Man 2 and it was good for his career that he was a big component of a huge box office hit.
It's a crime that he didn't win the Oscar for The Wrestler. I don't know how you could go past that for Sean Penn in Milk. Sean Penn was exceptional but come on! There's no question about it, Mickey's performance was moving beyond words and he TOTALLY lost himself in the role. Not just a little bit, totally.
@coolbrett He won pretty much every other award that matters. Why give a shit about the choices of the idiotic Oscar Academy? Just make up your own mind who you like.
@coolbrett LOL@ "he lost himself in the role". He was just playing himself. An old burnt out down on his luck star. Sean Penn actually turned himself into another person. Penn deserved the Oscar. Not that an Oscar means shit anyway.
@coolbrett He didn't because he didn't play wrestler, he WAS wrestler (even if it was boxing, acting, whatever), he actually played himself and that's the problem. No matter how great, heartbreaking, moving, touching, worked out he was (and as he truly was). I love him and the movie, I wanted him to have it, he is talented and he would deserved it for all those stuff he went through, but I understand why it did not happen. It wouldn't be that fair anyway...
@coolbrett I agree with you, but no he never lost himself in the role. NEVER speak for others when it comes to these things. Mickey said himself that losing yourself in the role would be a negative factor when it comes to acting. Gary Oldman (another actor who has always been said to have lost himself in his roles) says that you must stay in absolute control of a character to let the audience assume such a thing. Either way, Mickey did great.
@KayWildcat What I meant to say was, he made it LOOK like he lost himself in the role, because thats the job of the actor, to totally become someone else. Of course you need a certain amount of control because these things aren't really happening to you. You have to act. Randy isn't exactly a person that looks like he's in complete control of his life or actions anyway, but Rourke made it look like he disappeared into the role, which is the ultimate job of a great actor
@coolbrett Yes, well.....Rourke did pretty much re-live his life as inspiration for the character. In many ways.....Randy's life was parallel to his own.
@coolbrett , yeah def man.....Rourke really deserved a fucking Oscar in the Wrestler. This shit works backwards....like in Gladiator, the actor got the Oscar instead of the director. It should have been the other way around
@YeaWhiplash: Damn right about that. Bullet certainly was a pile of horseshit, production-wise, but Mickey's performance made my jaw hit the floor. Brilliant.
UGH still pisses me off that Penn won the Oscar...he STOLE it from Mickey! If I were Penn I would have walked down from the stage and handed it to Rourke and waved him upstage.
No problem. ;) Someone had to say it! In fact, if I ever see Sean Penn I'm going to ask him how he feels about winning the oscar based on the academy's fear of not being PC by handing it to him! I mean COME ON...Mickey won almost EVERY other award he was nominated for...he should have been the sure win! Such a shame.
Mickey deserved the Oscar as well, if you ask me. Sean Penn was very good in Milk, but I didn't care for Harvey Milk as much as I did about Randy Robinson.
This was a great speech and for the last few months I was a fan. Until I saw video of him grabbing girls asses and having porno kissing with teenage gals. He is drunk in clubs every night and acting like a diva too. The best he can do is Iron Man when he says he will never sell out again? Congrats on being bought out Mickey.
I was stunned by "The Wrestler." What an affecting movie, and Mickey Rouke was..well, there are just no words to describe how good he was in that role. Fuck the Academy Awards for not giving the Oscar he so very much deserved. I wish him all the best.
At least someone appreciates Mickey Rourke... Stupid Oscars.... But who cares he's got a Best Actor Golden Globe and a Best Actor BAFTA, so take that Academy Awards!
hey Camoron339 , I don't think they meant no harm by it, they we're just so used to him being funny all the time at that point that it was an automatic response I think
how about the insensitivity at the celebrity crowd reaction to "such a pleasure to be here an be back out of the darkness". that wasn't funny in the slightest not even in a twisted kind of way.
Damn straight; Ross stuck to his guns. And if Russell brand quits a radio show, who cares? But Ross resigning would have knock on effect on lots of people who produce his shows.
A classic speech. And he's right about Marisa Tomei ... her performance was truly amazing....
The 3 months' suspension refers to one of the British broadcasters. Was it Russell Brand's prank call to a politician or Maggie Thatcher's daughter's utterly racist comments about a French tennis player? Somebody help me out here....
Anyway, Mickey Rourke was always a great actor. So many great performances.... Although he was born for The Wrestler role, I actually thought he was good, not great....
I don't remember the last time i posted something on youtube.

anyway, lets get on topic for a second- its great to have Mickey Rourke well and truly back- give him best actor Oscar please!!
i have been a fan of mickey roarke for many years & watching this cracked me up. he is such a rebel & he is so NOT fake like many other celebrities. it makes me happy for him to get this award cuz i think in his earlier yrs he would have prob just thumbed his nose at it but now after having made so many mistakes in life & career, he's back & he's a bit humble in his own way but still has his bad-ass attitude. mickey is the still the man!
hahahahaha - the brits RULE!!! "Haha, u say that "sorensenallan", u dont know the half of it, Jonathan Ross, the host, was suspended by the BBC for making, apparently unacceptable remarks on BBC radio. & his suspension has only been lifted for about 3 weeks b4 this! lol
You're right, I watched this lives, well, when it was on, but the fuckin' BBC wankers putting a 15-20minute delay on it means we couldn't watch it actually live, but its stupid because of tproducers & the BAFTA execs making sure Jonathan Ross tone down this yr because of the Radio call scandal, but he was still a little funny with what he could get away wuth, the Cristian Bale joke wasn't too bad, but ur right, pretty boring this yr, Mickey Rourke injected abit of bloody life into it!!!
People who are complaining about this acceptance speech because of the swearing should be dropped off in the middle of Africa and forced to help plough a field to feed starving children.....maybe they will find other things to complain about.
I hope he win this Oscar, but...I don't know if he's "politically correct" enough for those self-righteous guys of the Academy...meaning that he can't won the Oscar u_u but I really hope I'm totally wrong...
Thanks for posting this! The theater here in Ottawa is playing it once a day at ten pm. Just saw it and it was not what I expected. Thats a good thing! The low budget kept it very realistic and not over the top. I remember every scene and these days thats a rare thing. The ending made the film. I didnt feel I missed something. The stripper left when he needed her. His daughter could have called him too. I would have seen he was trying. I wanted to protect Randy/Mickey It was not all his fault..
I know! Sharon Stone always does this shit. Acting like she's so emotional over who wins. Give me a break. She looks so stupid especially considering Mickey's speech is so fun.

Care for Harvey Milk? it was a true story, and he change the face of politics as we now it. Randy Robinson was a fictional character.
Acting wise Mickey was a tad better, but I'm biases because I love the dude. But Milk had WAYYY too much going for it to lose.

Yup, it's Gemma Arterton. Absolute stunner and a fine actress in her own right.

..."and now he is suspended for three months"
hahahahaha - the brits RULE!!! "Haha, u say that "sorensenallan", u dont know the half of it, Jonathan Ross, the host, was suspended by the BBC for making, apparently unacceptable remarks on BBC radio. & his suspension has only been lifted for about 3 weeks b4 this! lol

this was the highlight of the night. god he is funny. the rest of it was so boring and then there he came and lightened up the mood. what a guy.
snapcrackleandpop99 3 years ago
You're right, I watched this lives, well, when it was on, but the fuckin' BBC wankers putting a 15-20minute delay on it means we couldn't watch it actually live, but its stupid because of tproducers & the BAFTA execs making sure Jonathan Ross tone down this yr because of the Radio call scandal, but he was still a little funny with what he could get away wuth, the Cristian Bale joke wasn't too bad, but ur right, pretty boring this yr, Mickey Rourke injected abit of bloody life into it!!!

Best speech I've seen in ages. Hope he wins an Oscar too.

People who are complaining about this acceptance speech because of the swearing should be dropped off in the middle of Africa and forced to help plough a field to feed starving children.....maybe they will find other things to complain about.

MICKEY FOR OSCAR

Thanks for posting this! The theater here in Ottawa is playing it once a day at ten pm. Just saw it and it was not what I expected. Thats a good thing! The low budget kept it very realistic and not over the top. I remember every scene and these days thats a rare thing. The ending made the film. I didnt feel I missed something. The stripper left when he needed her. His daughter could have called him too. I would have seen he was trying. I wanted to protect Randy/Mickey It was not all his fault..

look at all the fake-ass celebs pretending to be emotional, it makes me sick! but Rourke is the fucking man!
33hegemon 3 years ago
I know! Sharon Stone always does this shit. Acting like she's so emotional over who wins. Give me a break. She looks so stupid especially considering Mickey's speech is so fun.
