Hello everyone I was wondering what are the things between her double delta wings. They look like wing fenses to control airflow ,but i'm not sure. Does anyone know?
Current western design docrines with such engines positioning dictate provisions for save-guarding against only certain engine failures be they in friendly or hostile territory, whilst not taking into account the earlier mentioned projectile impact-explosion factor, tho this design has the simple advantage of being more stable shud an engine failure occur,on-board flight management computers'll compensate for yaw.I forsee muc mor life to d' F16,it only needs redesigning of its air intake + XL wing
Gen Dynmcs or now Lockheed Martin shud've gone ahead with this design as contender to Typhoon,Rafael & SHornet.Had it done so,it'll need 2x GE F414-400 as oppose to the present single engine with appropriately spaced placement from the fuselage spine as that of the SR71/YF12,YF19,F14,Mig29 & Su30.These mentioned jets stand to survive AAM & AA cannon rounds far better than engines that sit side by side in close proximity as in F15,F18,Typhoon & Rafael,a resulting strike impact will shatter both
That was a really interesting video - thanks for uploading it. A shame all the icecream lickers are commenting on something they know nothing about...as per usual.
I had a chance to watch one oo the XLs fly for a week or so in 1984 or 85, and it was an amazing aircraft. I was stationed at Carswell AFB, in Ft Worth. A pilot was practicing a routine that ultimately was flown at the Paris Air Show in 85(?). Being a SAC base, we didn't get to see too much in the way of fighters, so it was a treat for us. We did get an SR71 at the base one time, now THAT was amazing too!! :-)
F-22 and the F23 were designed to super cruise ,but the F16 mod by NASA did it first. I remember hearing of laminar flow, didn't really get it at first. Since I'm not a true Aero tech head.
@CaptainTred well the F-15 is just as maneuverable, can fly farther, higher, and MUCH faster, and can carry a larger payload. while i LOVE the way this desighn looks i would still choose a F-15 every time.

Its for fat american pilots

the F-16XL would most likely be a fighter bomber but still prove deadly in a dogfight because of it's delta wing that will give it serious lift.

Need this now. Put this up against the f35 too replace the a-10
checkitout22192 8 months ago
@checkitout22192 Yeah, I'm sure you can mount the A-10's gun on either of those. The only thing that will ever replace an A-10, is another A-10.

I think they went for the F-15E's range and ze ability to mount CFT
*not reading specs.

The F-16XL and F-15E were competing in the Enhanced Tactical Fighter program, not the Advanced Tactical Fighter program....

This is what the F-16 really needed to originally look like.

F-16XL looks like Euro Fighter ...

@bottomeline You either know very little about aircraft or you need glasses.

WOAH, hold on, the F-22 was the first plane with super cruise

@zeezke nope The English Electric Lightning was. in 1954 already

@itisme235 I stand corrected, thank you for teaching me something new :)

supercruise ??? it just needed a more powerful engine.
In todays conflicts , payload and range is the king. JDAM changed everything.
Now you need aircraft that can carry more and loiter for longer time in the battlefield.
The F-16 XL would be perfect in that environment . Too bad its design was ahead of the 80s technology

Why did the Air Force cancel the XL project? The AF already uses two fighters, the F-15 and F-16, so why not also use two Fighter Bombers?

I can't belive the USAF turned down this work of art for that F 15!
