And that is why Thigpen played with OP. Listen to that sound, mmm. A good brush player can completely transform a ballad or a up-tune. Listen to Art Taylor's work with Red Garland. Thigpen and Garland are my two favorites in this medium, I'd love to play guitar behind them. Damn.
Wow, I just found out about Mr. Thigpen through a fellow drummer. Too bad he's gone....I have some soup on the stove that could use his great stir! woulda been some GOOOOOD soup!
A great drummer, and a total genius with the brushes!!! I have a number of Oscar Peterson CDs with Ed Thigpen on drums. He was always rhythmically spot on!
I also studied with Ed at a Aebersold jazz camp in 1984. I bought a copy of his book "the art of brushes" and had him autograph it. I still have the cassette too. He was the greatest teacher and obviously an amazing talent on the drums. RIP Ed Thigpen. Look for some nice Zoro stroke around :45 through 1:00.
@protobuster a coated drum head is what you need for brushes. a clear see through head wont work. A regular Remo Coated Ambassador works pretty good and not too expensive.
I was lucky enough to Study with Ed at his home in Copenhagen last year. He transformed the way i thought about music. His generosity, boundless enthusiasm and willingness to share his knowledge is something i'll never forget.
REST IN PEACE ED! Saw you play in Montreal a few years back. You came on stage exactly like that: Your charm and witt, a set of brushes and a snare drum and you blew our minds. Thanks for the music.
Ed Thigpen is a masterful and all around intelligently detailed drummer, in both words and on the sticks.
I can honestly say this man is 'up there' with Gene Krupa, Art Blakey and the rest that get so much credit. Ed's work has been highly under recognized by most modern musicians. His work is so good, that most won't realize it until he is long gone, sadly. But, lets hope that is NOT going to be, anytime soon. God Bless You, Ed Thigpen for what you have blessed us with!
