Only Steely would try to put out a disco themed, blues tune with pop riffs, about a pedophile. I think they realized the more somber, downbeat version would fly better. I'm sure the record execs felt that way. Mr. Lapage is your man, he's always laughing having fun, showing his films in the den.......... (shudder) This guy was a real bad man.Fagan knew this tune was too tongue in cheek for the words, even for Steely Dan. But it is a great song.
YOUTUBE IS GETTING REAL STUPID WITH THESE ALTERNATIVE OR LIVE VERSIONS..NO OFFENSE TO THE POSTER..I'M TALKING ABOUT THESE COPYRIGHT CRAP LAWS..I HAVE THE SONGS/ALBUMS OR INTEND ON BUYING THEM..IF YOU WOULD ALLOW THE FREEDOM OF LETTING EVERY SONG EVER TO BE POSTED..IN ITS ORIGINAL ALBUM AND/OR SINGLE FORM..YOU LABEL ARE'NT RICH ENOUGH..GREEDY FUKKS..
Interesting. Personally, I like album version more. Of course, that may be cognitive dissonance since I've listened to the album version about 100 times or so...

I LOVE it!!! It's got the real feel, that the released version just couldn't reproduce - over-edited, I guess. Well, that WAS a big part of what made The Dan what it was - making certain that EVERY NOTE was "perfect". Sort of backfired here, as the demo tape shows.
Thanks for putting this up! This certainly gives the final version a run for its money...love the dueling guitar riffs. The two versions are almost like two entirely different songs and I love them both...

What an interesting version, as far from the finished product as a SD demo that I've ever heard.

GREEDY? How about you do something for a living that someone else can steal off the internet. Jerk.

@jbolio888 you can't steal "sound." Otherwise, Boeing should get copy-writing the sound of jet exhaust.
