  • Not so about scrapping it. They've just had it rewired throughout and the console lovingly restored. It's there to stay.

  • @animalsongs2011 - thanks for the info, David!

  • It was filmed at the Convocation of the Academy of St Cecilia at St George's Cathedral, Southwark, London, where I am the Director of Music. It was filmed after the Solemn Salve Regina was sung at the end of Vespers and Benediction, accompanied by Naji. he then improvised on the Salve. The organ is a bit of a heap - 1958 John Compton extension organ, 78 stops over 16 ranks! We need a new one!!

  • @nickgale1975 - 1958 Compton extension job of that size? If it's anything like Fleet Street, or the 1930 at Downside, or St Luke's Chelsea, it should be a national treasure! Compton was a genius, and Jimmy Taylor scarcely less so.

  • @nickgale1975 - au contraire, the Compton is a fine organ, one of Jimmy Taylor's last masterpieces. The reeds are particularly great. It is the sister of the St Bride Fleet Street organ, which is now rightly revered, with a much better acoustic than that at SBFS. I hear that David Coram has been overhauling your Compton, too. I am praying fervently for the dignified death of the Létourneau replacement organ scheme and for the magnificent Compton's complete historic restoration.

  • why did they cancel him on trinite? :-( i hope that the church music keep his strong possition in france and that not ather churches take their good organ players away...

  • i think he left by himself.

  • He did

  • @praisethelord333 - because they're more interested in 'Liturgie Animé pour les jeunes'... bastards. I say that as one of 'les jeunes' myself...

  • C'est le Salve Regina du ton solennel!

  • I would do anything to have a pipe organ!

  • @babiesdie - you can have this one! The buggers at Southwark are intent on scrapping it =(

  • True, Mr Hakim is indeed Lebanese. My point of reference was that he is often thought of as a "French" organist as he commands on the prominent ' titulaire ' posts in Paris.

  • Superb improv by Mssr Hakim. The French organists have always been know for this incredible art of improvisation at the organ - - hope they continue to do so, especially in this day and age where this music can be captured for later on. Imagine the works that must have been created in improv by Bach, Mozart, etc that only those present at the time ever heard... Wonderful performance! The credit say that this is from the Academy of St. Cecilia - - where exactly is the organ located?

  • Mssr Hakim is not French, he is Lebanese!

  • @timfergie: Counting Naji Hakim among the "French organists" is not inappropriate in my opinion: although he clearly draws material for his music from his Lebanese origins, the influence of the French school that taught him (most notably Langlais and Messiaen) is equally present.

  • What is this organ? Where can I see its specification?

My mum (a professional organist herself) has met Naji Hakim and says he couldn't be a nicer guy if he tried... also, his wife Marie-Bernadette Dufourcet-Hakim is a fine organist and similarly charming as a person...

  • how terrified should be the crowd by this funeral warrior organ player.. heheheh

I like it, don't get me wrong. LOL warming.

Pipe organ can actually be nasty.

  • Putain, tu t´etonnes, qu´il n y a pas de monde aux concerts d´orgue.. C´est chiant a mourir.

  • This is definetly one of the nicest fire extinguishers I've seen in a long time.

  • Yes, it seems to be a blue-based red.

  • Awesome!

  • just funny guy just warming up.

  • Not on your life. This is more in the style of Pierre Cochereau, and yes, it is an improvisation on the chant: Salve Regina.

few in the world can improvise on the caliper of Mr. Hakin. You have seen and heard musical history in the making.

  • What a Pro! Did he really expect this to end up on YouTube? Looks pirated to me! But lovely, like watching Glenn Gould play Bach in his bathrobe.

  • Demonic

  • This is definitely an improvisation...

(One of) the theme(s) is the Gregorian chant "Salve Regina"

  • Nice wild piece. I wish the organ were better in tune. Those wobbly unisons at the beginning are almost unlistenable. Fun to watch him do his registration changes just before 4 minutes.

  • The organ appears to be (from the link in the video description) at St. George's Cathedral in Southwark, London. Recorded in June, 2006?

  • I improvised a toccata on the Kyrie from the Orbis Factor while a studet of Susan Ferre. It sounded like he used a bit of that chant.

He's a great improviser. But like the Durufle's, I think his wife Marie-Bernadette is a better organist with repertoire.,

  • Graet composer..!!

  • wow ive never seen a fuzzier picture of a fire extiguisher. Good music by the way

  • wow, i love it.

  • JUST STARTING OFF.

  • very nice

  • Sorry, I just hate this kind of music. Give me baroque (or even Messiaen).

  • I've found the source! It's from the Academy of St Cecilia (link in the description).

  • My favorite thing is the fire extinguisher, poised to be called into action if things get out of hand. Perhaps all the Bombarde reeds played together might start a fire. By the way, I think it's an improvisation.

  • Very good !I've met Naji Hakim at Paris Conservatory. He's a good guy. If you like organ, you can also visit my page laclef2007.

    See you soon !

  • I think it is an improvisation. Look at his typical hand-crossings when he improvises.

  • Wow! I'd love to hear this played at Cologne Cathedral in Germany.

  • *googles*

    So it is! Updated.

  • Isn't that Naji Hakim

  • I do not know the piece, but it sounds very like something by Marcel Dupre. Few organists (certainly not me!) could aspire to play it!

  • Dupre? I'd rather say Langlais - unless it's an improvisation. The theme is the Gregorian "Salve Regina".

  • Choral et Fugue Op. 57

Of course, Dupre wrote pieces on Salve Regina as well, such as the following, which appears in volume 11 of Jeremy Filsell's recording of all Dupre's organ works: Salve Regina - Ite missa est (Plainchant) [3:02]

    34. Choral [3:20]

I don't have the recording, but the piece on YouTube sounds more in the style of Dupre than Langlais, to me!

    35. Fugue [3:28]

  • Sorry, but this is definitely *not* Dupre's Choral et Fugue.

  • Beautiful. God's musical instrument! What a blessing to play like this.

  • Awesome!

  • WHERE DID YOU GET THIS????!!!!!!!!
