  • Love the vid. I use to play the original, man I love using stealth assassin. Maybe ill install the game later today.

  • I was under the impression that Blizz wanted no trademark, not even for themselves. To a certain I think it should since it was made by the fans it should belong to the fans. A rare occasion when a genre was born from its players; having a single entity own seems to go against what DotA was all about.

  • @Menuki In my opinion Blizz should take the trademark but never enforce it just so no one else can even try trademark it.

  • @TrueKinth I could see them do that too

  • Great videos

  • As someone who's played both DotA and LoL, I found these three videos about the history of dota/moba games VERY interesting. Keep up the good work, you guys!

  • The only one way to settle the lawsuit properly is very simple. Valve executive board VS Blizzard executive board in a 5v5 game of original dota. Anyways, awesome video.

  • Both Eul and IceFrog work for Valve and those 2 are the most responsible for dota of today. Valve didn't steal the idea they hired the makers.

  • wowowowoww hold on a minute..

Blizzard almost released a starcraft mod called Realm of the TITANS??? I don't supposed this new mini-franchise of theirs has anything to do with their unannounced MMO codenamed "TITAN" does it??...

I think the code has been cracked, my friends..

  • I'm pretty sure blizzard owns the word 'dota' since whenever you make mod in their games you have to sign something that says that it belongs to blizzard and that blizzard can do everything that it wants with the mod.

  • is this guy retarded? the pro teams were practicing for a long time on the closed beta before the tourney

  • I don't think the head of Valve(Gabe) want's to make any fuss about such a beloved game as dota. It would just put him in a bad light and no one would earn it. I hope it stays open for anyone to use.

  • What ever happened to Eul?

  • @weza3 He works for Valve at the moment

  • OK then shut down dota and evrey dota spinoff for good, and evreybody's happy now... go play SC 2 core game

  • Blizzard's license agreement says they own anything made using their game engine. Thus, they can control the name DoTa, as it technically belongs to them.

  • @napalmcannon Their EULA means they own the map created by their engine not the trademark of the name. You imply that if i created a map called Coca Cola in WC3 then Blizzard would own the trademark. This isnt how trademarks work. What matters is if you have as a company goods or services under that mark and when it was first used. The name of a custom map made by non employees doesnt cut it.

  • @captvimes Coca Cola is already trademarked.

Dota, however was not. Defence of the Ancients is essentially Dota, it's just turned into an acronym. Like how Laser is an acronym for a long string of annoyingly long words.

  • @napalmcannon That's not how it works.

  • @Ub3rSk1llz

Search up Blizzard Entertainment End user license agreement.

  • @napalmcannon You mean look up the license agreement when DotA was made. Good luck finding it and defining when DotA was "made".

  • Comment removed

  • @napalmcannon No it doesn't You can't trademark a name cause your player put it in there. Plus it isn't Dota in the mod it is Defense of the Ancients. This is a stupid argument made by those who don't understand trademark law and how you need to file for it. The only thing Blizzard owns is the actual mod they don't have any trademark on it or anything past that.

  • @napalmcannon The name DoTa was not made with their game engine lmao.. Only the game itself was. That's terrible logic you got there.

  • @DaFleegsta

You mean the game, DEFENSE OF THE ANCIENTS.

The name DoTa is abbreviation of Defense of the Ancients. You don't say it like Dee, Oh, Tee, Eh, D.O.T.A., you say Dota because it's faster and easier to type/say. Like League of Legends is pronounced Lawl because most people don't want to type in L.O.L. when they say the name.

  • @napalmcannon

EULA is not legally binding. By blizzards logic Microsoft owns every title of everything I type in Word

  • Eul is working for Valve too

  • Is there not gonna be an ep4??

  • @Fredo5227 what more can be said?

  • @Fredo5227 Nope, the whole legal disputes are ongoing so just stay tuned

  • @vicrobert wow i see what kind of person you are well yeah enjoy your ignorance! good day to you and have fun with that kind of attitude because we know sentient is wasted on humans

  • While I do love Dota and Dota 2, I find that valve should not own the trademark "Dota". Dota itself is a community created game thus it belongs to everyone.... It would be like trying to put a trademark in "soccer" or "basketball"

  • Blizzard was too stuck up to think that DotA would not benefit their own company as they had more than five years' chance after DotA got popular - to employ the DotA makers and lay claim to the legal rights of the game but they totally ignored it. They were really were thinking only their own games would be the best and didn't care about the popularity of DotA untill many other companies started making DotA-like games then they regreted. That's how screwed up Blizzard was and full of themselves.

  • @unholydanger thats being original minded... not stupid fucks who cant think of their own game...

  • @Korijna lol original? Do you even know Warcraft and Blizzard Dota are copied from other games.

  • @unholydanger ok whatever, but i still consider LoL and HoN developers and founders who dont know how to make their own game

  • @Lukaaaa123 if you think of sell out everybody else is a sell out while they stick to the same dota game only changing the looks and the heroes while blizzard is changing the game play and mechanics of the game they are determine to make it their own not just blindly rip off a community generated mod that was started on their games.Blizzard is one of the few companies that respects their community content and they only made blizzard dota after everybody else took advantage of a nontrademark game

  • @Tresgarbo Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah, Fuck u faggot

  • coming soon... ish... i can't stop laughing at that!

  • @zenthex1234 if you pause you can see that they TM'd that.

  • the background music for all your history fits so perfectly it's unbelievable

  • Dude LoL has 32.5 million players now you should update your numbers.

  • @iHoldeni registrated users... i doubt half of themy play regulary

  • hi talks like we didn't saw the 1 and 2 part...

  • can you do this for Tomb Raider/Eidos/Core Design/Crystal Dynamics?

    Thank you!

  • Blizzard should leave the Dota genre to Valve

  • Wouldn't the genre be titled RTA: Real-Time Action?

  • Comment removed

  • Dota Hard? WTF!?

Dota was supposed to be the one noobs play when they cant play Warcraft 3 decently

People these days cant fucking play a game that requires clicking more than 5 buttons

WHY CANT THE GAME PLAY ITSELF FOR ME!?

  • @barneysixx Sounds like you got bitched out for feeding a lane.

  • @barneysixx since when has buttons ever had anything to do with the difficulty of a game? The difficulty lies in the strategy, and playing smart, while also being aggressive. You sound like someone who just downloaded LoL and decided you've been a fan for 15 years.

  • Woops, famusab is right, it's activision, not EA, my bad :D

  • Y UN NO SPEAK ABOUT EULS?

  • dota hipsters getting their panties in a bunch. typical.

  • the commentator sounds sick?

  • whoa they should make a movie about dota like they did that crap with facebook, i bet it would be better...

  • Valve is awesome.

Im sure they would never do anything to Blizz

  • Pro League my ass...

  • I never herd of DOTA entill now lol

  • It's just a freaking map.. not a mod .. OMGG! gay ppl still think wc3 is made of mods

  • The problem is Guinsoo, Icefrog and the developers of Dota made the MOD using the Warcraft III mod making software called World Editor and Blizzard employees had nothing to do with it, so it's not a trademark. Then, Valve got a chance to hire Icefrog and continue to improve the mod, making a bigger community and marketing for the well known Dota... Blizzard claimed that Dota is their trademark is just to make money. I trust both companies but I still like Valve's work on Dota.

  • The Title is Pro League but in video dont even talking about SMM G-League ESWC WDC WCG zzz how come the title is Pro League :/

  • btw the pro gamers had a month or two to practice dota 2 before they played it.

  • Being a DotA player myself i probably spot too many errors, but here i go.

One thing has been mentioned already, IceFrog offered Blizzard to make Dota2 for them, but they rejected.

Secondly, China already had a big part of the playerbase before whatever game you mentioned came to their country. 7/16 Teams were from Asia, 2-3 from China.

  • i still think dota 2 should be called dota 2 well it is dota 2 secound dota

yes elu made dota gussino as well but like he said he past the torch and icefrog while devopleing dota 2 is still woking on the mod realsing new heros and he haz reallydone great job

  • they gotta do one on Deus Ex, Twisted Metal, and Insomniac Games

  • I wish you would do this for us history, cause then I might get a better grade in that class

  • i don't know if i would be able to make the switch from LoL to DotA

  • Thing is, Blizzard ignored DotA for too long, they simply did not want to support a game that has not been their creation. And now that Valve came and started making Dota 2 , Blizz guys just want to make some money out of it.

Valve has my respect, they appreciate and support community and it's work while Blizz guys are soldouts (mostly to EA), they have good games but...Let's just say that Blizz guys acted as total douches and missed the opportunity of the decade when they ignored DotA :)

  • @Lukaaaa123 Agree,and I hope Blizz will see this.

  • Comment removed

  • @Lukaaaa123 Well said, respect to you sir.

  • @Lukaaaa123 Blizzard has nothing to do with EA, you mean Activi$ion

  • @famusab XD Activi$ion XD

  • thats some crazy shit im buying starcraft 2 just for dota lol

  • @Lukaaaa123 Blizz is also joint with Activision, so parts of the team are activision employees

  • @Lukaaaa123 You know Blizzard dota is a FREE mod? and they have nothing to do with EA...

  • @Lukaaaa123 what could they do? Blizzard has it's own games, it's not a crime to let mods be mods.

  • @Lukaaaa123 I think you mean Activison. When you said "sold out".

Its activision blizzard. And valve has always been about community. Ur asking the TV to surf the internet even though the computer has been doin it all along.

Sure blizzard missed their shot. But hey look at what their doing with Blizzard DotA. Doubt series purists would really like it. Valve is content with making the exact same game with shiny new graphics. Purists want that...kinda.

  • @Lukaaaa123 Hu.... How can they be soldouts to EA ? Blizzard is part of Activision...

  • @Lukaaaa123 Activision Blizzard. Nuff Said.

  • @Lukaaaa123 How is this misinformed and illogical comment have the most thumbs ups... Blizzard is looking out for the community, with not letting valve claim a community franchise as their own, as well as releasing a free map for their starcraft community. I hardly call that cashing in. In this case Valve is the one doing just that. And your remark on blizz being sellouts to EA shows your lack of knowledge about the game industry as a whole.

  • @Lukaaaa123 Blizzard never acted on any trademarks having to do with the name dota until Valve tried to take the dota name for their use only. While I hate what Blizzard has become they are not at fault here. Valve is being the douche in this situation.

  • @Lukaaaa123 Did you just say Blizzard sold out to EA? The fact that your comment has 45 people that agree with you is atrocious.

  • I was waiting for them to mention one of my favorite games. Land of Chaos Online. LOCO! :D

  • Eul: Eul's Scepter of Divinity, Guinsoo: Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse, IceFrog: ??

  • @1994CodeBreaker lol idiot, his name has appeared in the loading screen since 5 years ago? And now there's no Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse anymore ROFL=))

  • @thecrappyidols Oh thanks for the info, Mr. Smarty Pants

  • @1994CodeBreaker ur welcome, Dumb Ass

  • @Icemaire and i dont whant to look for my comment

  • @Icemaire i dont remember what i said

  • meh... dota 2 isnt that cool. Hon and LoL are still better unfortunatly

  • @mtgwiz25 do you have a beta key?

  • @JEAV148 i do and i have played a few games

  • @mtgwiz25 funny, i have played a lot of the 3 games, and i think dota2 is way superior to the other too, but, i do accept that sometims lol is funnier, hon is plain garbage imo...

  • @mtgwiz25 explain that plz

  • @laaarsas well it brings nothing to the table. it is just DOTA with better graphics. LoL is more fun because it as a lot more stuff going on, including 2 additional spells and runes and masteries. HoN already filled the niche that DOTA 2 is trying to fill, namely a Dota clone with better graphics. I would much rather have had DOTA 2 do something different. It doesnt even take advantige of some of the benifits of steam like voip. How come it doesnt have that and tf and css do?

  • @laaarsas voip is essentail to good gameplay. if steam would incorporate that alone it would give them an edge but its not there. 1 map. no game modes. slow gameplay. DOTA was a great game for its time but cant compete in the current market. simply put it is the lack of new or convenient features that prevent me from playing it. the other games simply have so much more to offer.

  • @laaarsas i understand that its in beta but from what the developers have said i dont see them moving very far from simply being DOTA with better graphics.

  • Okay, am I the only one that sees an inevitable collapse of the MOBA market? It is being hugely flooded with the same game, with more developers jumping on the bandwagon they think is "The Next Big Thing"

  • NO one should have ownership of the name. That is all

  • Where's the new episode? :P

  • @antdude its in the video response hope this helps

  • @MegaPacman25 Thanks. Ugh, why can't YouTube tell me of these new videos in their AYH playlist subscriptions?

  • @antdude thats easy they didnt put it in the series yet

  • @MegaPacman25 Well, they should do it right away. ;)

  • Where the fuck is IT!!! don't tell me people from other countries get it first like all the time and we asians are left out in the dust.

  • hmm this is a tough one... Eul was the creator, he invented the whole thing...i would say that in a way blizzard owns it/some of it, since it was built with their engine, although there are some additional things to that... icefrog is the one who deserves it the most...

and the most right and good thing would be if noone claimed the name, that it all belonged to the players.... man, go figure!

  • WHERE IS THE NEW ONE, GOD DAMN IT

  • Its monday!

WHERE IS MY NEW ALL YOU HISTORY !???!11 D:

  • where is PART4?

  • It's DotA not DoTA.

  • @TheGIantR Defense of The Ancients, Defense of the Ancients... Big Fucking Difference.

  • All Your History :Nintendo

  • It's Monday, where is my All your history?!

  • Action RTS sounds pretty good as a genre actually :D

  • noob blitz at 0:33

  • They didn't mentioned the Capital of Dota Players, which is Philippines. lol. (at least that is our point of view.)

  • @DarkZoneGaming1 China is the capital of DotA, sorry.

  • Yogscast called the genre "MOBA". If that doesn't make it official, I don't know what does. XD

  • @Jeffylequamquam yogscast is gay

  • Pendragon is an asshole >____<

  • This show never ever shows on my upload list. -__-

  • I WANT TO KNOW WHAT EUL HAS TO SAY ON THIS

  • @ChudorMONKEY same!!

  • I don't care wut they say about DotA 2, I mah quit LoL and hand mah moniez to VALVe!

  • Every Monday?!. BULLSHIT!.

You better not fail me again, AYH guy!.

  • Guinsoo's team introduced many genre innovations: brush, scaling stat for mages, emphasis on skill shots, non-mana resources systems, jungling as a full-time gameplay, de-emphasis on carry meta, external summoner skills, mastery and runes.

Let's see Icefrog come out with something better than DOTA HD Remix.

  • @Aggrofool You know he did it because World Editor wasn't good enough for making DotA better, since Blizzard wouldn't release WC3 source codes. So he is making DotA2 to make the genre and game much better.

  • @Aggrofool yea jungling as a full-time gameplay, thats just retarded when ur objective is to destroy the enemy's base

  • @Aggrofool Icefrog that we believed... Yup! He might add many new features... Anyway, he had made one of the most famous gaming features for the heroes like Pudge's hook (Blitz' hook) and also Nevermore's razes...

  • 7:37 Did red let "lil_faggit" swap with blue? D:

  • i know this has probably been asked and answered before but...why is this series always in 360p?

  • Blizzard > Valve

  • @ImAllFact Go fuck some pandas

  • 6:06 Why is there a Pyro from TF2....

  • @ZhengKunMa

it was a fake pic posted by someone

  • He sounds sick...

  • By law, Valve has no claim to the DOTA name since they were not the originator of it. The way I see it is that Blizzard is the only company that could trademark DOTA since it was their mod and there is something in EULA about it. Icefrog could have a case to trademark it. All be it, Valve can trademark DOTA 2 and than force other developers to change their DOTA title since they can argue it is confusing to the average person.

  • @Tri1umph

The thing is, though.... Valve's game is Dota 2, not DOTA 2 or DotA 2. Dota, as in... D o t + lower case a... as in a word.

  • @Tri1umph

He pretty much said what you wrote in the video.

    Lol.

  • Sooon....ish....:D

  • thumbs up if they should do one on machinma.....................even though they are machinima

  • @HitmanAssassin141

Well they could do one on Machinima, since Machinima is actually just a computer made animation that uses a real time engine (In lame man's terms: film made by using a video game engine).

Machinima . com originally was just a video streaming website, like YouTube, in which people could post their Machinima on.

  • @HitmanAssassin141

Machinima is just a genre of animation, or "digital puppetry". The website and channel is just named that because that's what the company posts.

  • Valve, I'm still waiting for hats on my Heroes for Dota 2 :D

  • very interesting........they shouldn't get trademark on DoTA (since this name isn't claimed by icefrog, regardless if he's the one who made it the most famous)....they can have the name DOTA2. lol

  • Your awesome for doing this series, i really appreciate the time and effort you put into production :) cheers!

  • just a prediction on how experience players will work to help newbies with dota 2 as they say at 5:40

my guess It'll work like the coaching system in tf2

  • @randomnerd123 Yes, if you are on the beta there's a tutorial but locked on the Beta :)

  • Icefrog knows more about the genre than every other developer

  • History or drama fuck i dont give a shit just me be the facts not opinions

  • Pendragon is fat

  • Wow. After being introduced to DotA a few months ago, both the game and the genre, I've played a lot of it as well as LoL (and I'm sitting fingers crossed in the hopes of joining in on DotA 2), so I found this really interesting. I am dissappointed however, that Valve and others seem to be getting into the same trouble as Mojang and Bethesda.

  • Hey man go to the game station

  • Your last video got me to go play Dota 2, and then I got destroyed endlessly. You weren't kidding about that learning curve.

  • Why the hate for Guinsoo? He played a big role too, just not as big as Icefrog's.

In Ep2, Icefrog was mentioned as the reason DOTA reached the top.

  • One important piece of information not presented here is that Eul now works for Valve as well, so the question of ownership of the "dota" moniker isn't nearly as murky as the video portrays: Guinsoo versus Icefrog.

  • ill still stick with LoL good day

  • There's also a side-scrolling platforming moba called Awesomenauts currently in development geared towards the more casual players I believe, or at least that's what I got out of the gameplay videos.

  • Are we ever going to see All Your History in HD? Man, that would be awesome.
