@Rensune Like I said Al sharpton is not a public official. He doesnt make laws. He doesnt have any duty to sign bills any more than you or I. If you cant understand that then there is no help for you.
@rashadkijani Have either you or I run for public office? I have not (yet anyway) the reverend has. The question is valid as a hypothetical because of his many attempts. (However his response was also valid. Unlike his political platforms.)
@Rensune He may have ran for public office but he has never won. And he wasnt running for office in the context of this video. Just beacuse someone says something is a "pocket constitution," does not mean it is a pocket constitution. The person could be lying, thus he or she would be requesting Sharpton to sign a random document or book. Sharpton or any other person would likely respond, "I don't sign anything I have not read." I think he means literally what he said, when he said
"I don't sign anything I haven't read"
and as he can´t possibly have read before what was standing in this, he didn´t sign it, because even if someone says it´s something (in this case maybe a pocket constitution) it could be something else.
Hmm this Republican wants to keep weed illegal and he is really bad on social issues but MY TAX DOLLARS BOOTSTRAPS BIG GOV'T welp time to vote conservative!
*United States becomes even more fucked due to right wing rule*
What I find more amusing than the video are the excuses being made for Sharpton. You know damn well that if Bush were ever asked to sign a pocket Constitution and he replied, "I don't sign anything I haven't read," you people would be falling all over yourselves to forward it to everyone you know as the joke of the century.
Granting that someone has a "pocket constitution" and that it is demonstrably unaltered from the original, why is *anyone* else required to sign it upon request? Last I knew, the thing already had all the signatures needed. There are *lots* of valid ways to call Al Sharpton's words and deeds into question - this isn't really one of them.
the point is this.. 1. it's pretty obvious from the kind of policies mr sharpton supports, that he knows very little about the constitution and the separation of power. 2. in his own words "i don't sign anything i haven't read" it just coincidentally reflects something that is most likely true--he indeed doesn't know anything about it perhaps with the exception of the first two amendments. the point is not whether he will sign it.. this isn't hard to get.
I hate Al Sharpton but this clip is stupid and doesn't prove anything against him.
How does he know what he's signing when it's in a book he doesn't have time to read and fact check? There could be anything in that book, it doesn't have to be the constitution just because you say it is. It could be a trick for all he knows. All public figures have to take this attitude. Ignorant tricks like this are what make people so guarded about politics.

Unlike a 1900 page "healthcare bill" the greatest document respecting liberty in the free world will fit into your pocket. Interesting how that works.
He had not read whatever it was the person was asking him to sign.
Put it this way, I'll access your schedule, then Ill stuff a paper in your face as you're on your way somewhere assuring you "Its a pocket constitution for student government. Please sign it".
Something tells me you wouldn't be signing it either, and you'd be a fool to admit otherwise.
Ummm...jnauttube...I won't even give you as much credit as rbairos...
You're a moron if you think that people wouldn't lie for the purpose of getting a well known person to sign something they wanted to misrepresent, later.
I say this as an Atheist AND a Libertarian.
Neither position supports the conspiracy that I would defend Al Sharpton, who is, probably, almost as dumb as you.
well first of all a pocket constitution is a quite common market product, and in the event where someone were to alter a few pages in between to put an unethical and illegitimate use of a person's signature for perhaps political agendas, there's also two problems with that. one there are much better candidates with more name recognition to choose as target, two it actually doesn't require much intelligence if someone shows you a pocket constitution with a page altered to know it's bogus.

For all I know, maybe Al "Shparton" doesn't even know how to read, and just doesn't want to admit it, publicly.
Well, I understand the zealot part. Every group has them. I just tend to ignore them. And I come back and look at the comment page, and more people are looking to far into this. It's a joke. Ignore the "zealots".
Without this clip, we already have known Al was a moron.
And obviously neither have you jnauttube, unless you're some omniscient alien aware of the contents of every document thrust in your direction. It may have been a pocket constituion for a new white nation for all you know. Laugh at Sharpton if you want, Im sure theres plenty of items to choose from, but this isn't one of them. I stand by my reason.
Besides, I can't even imagine Sharpton being a reverend. I mean, if he doesn't have time to read the Constitution, how the hell can he ever make time to keep up with the Bible, for one thing? The Bible is like 30x as long, at least.
whoo689, the Bible is a whole lot longer than 30x as long. The Constitution plus bill of rights is only 5 pages long. He could read it over breakfast if he wanted to.

In Sharpton's defense, he was clearly not paying too much attention may not have thought "Constitution for Students of Government" was some sort of student union petition, and not the US Constitution. I could have easily made the same mistake. If the question was reworded to "Will you autograph the US Constitution for our students." he probably would have given a very different response.

But it sure is funny, and probably true.

Oh, I can find much more embarrassing Sharpton quotes. Hell, every time the man opens his mouth he makes a jackass of himself.

Al Sharpton is probably the most moronic public figure I have ever seen. I think Lindsay Lohan could probably give him an intellectual beatdown, lol

Seeing him say that is ridiculous. Seeing Gillespie rubbing his temples at the end is fucking hilarious.
