@lolatmyaccounts Ireland is not part of the British Isles. "British Isles" is a term invented by the British Empire and the Republic of Ireland government do not recognise this term.
@MacCeapaigh1916 The fact that Londonderry's in the United Kingdom makes it British. However, I respect that as an individual in Northern Ireland you have the right, under dual citizenship, to choose whether you would like to be Irish, British or both. Politically, however, it is wholly undeniable that Northern Ireland is British and the Republic is not.
The fact that *Derry* is in the UK does NOT mean it is in britian. They are not the same thing, that's why it is the United Kingdom of great britain AND northern Ireland. You can be british if you want, but northern Ireland is NOT in britain (although technically it is in the UK)
@MacCeapaigh1916 Someone needs a little lesson in terminology. The United Kingdom and BRITAIN mean the same thing whereas Great Britain denotes merely the eastern archipelago of the British Isles. Consequently, Londonderry is in Britain. FACT

I've been to your beautiful city and I have to say that I loved it. I don't care what you call it. It's a very pleasant city. I hope to go back there someday.
@TimeToDwell Derry city is correct when reffering to THE WALLED portion of the city BUT THE NAME OF THE whole city and not just the walled PROTESTANT portion is Londonderry
@TimeToDwell The nationalists are the ones to blame for the Londonderry/Derry name dispute. Until the start of the Troubles, the would often be referred to as 'Derry' even by unionists - but because the provos saw fit to emphasize a break with the UK by dropping the 'London' part of the name, the unionists automatically sought to emphasize the correct name of the city. The reason that the provos continue to use the word 'Derry' instead of the city's correct name escapes me; for it is British!
i find it very rare by the fact that the brits call it londonderry and are so keen to keep it that name. even though they wont acknowledge it on tv, like the weather, which is somethin i dont really understand. the city should be called by its rightful name which is DERRY (DOIRE), as it was when it was first established. i cant stand bitter cunts.
your a bit off there pal. durin the famine all of ireland was under british rule. the bastards didnt do shit to help us, thats why half the population was wiped out. it wasnt till the 1920s was the north established. so you can shove your "thankfullness" up your arse, you clearly know nothing so stop mouthin off
I'm from California and I recently found out that my great great grandfather, Thomas Moody, was from Derry, or Londonderry or Doire or whatever the real name is.by the way, how is doire pronounced? i would like to find more information on the city. I'm proud to be Irish.
There's little I can get 'wrong' when it comes to Irish, as I speak it fluently! Sure, it's common knowledge that the place names in all of Ireland aren't generally actual translations but simply Anglicization based on the original Irish place name. So, we're singing from the same hymn sheet, it would appear, unless I am misunderstanding your strange belligerent comment.
I don't understand what you're on about! I know quite well that Doire would actually mean 'Oak Grove', but it's not called Oakgrove in English. I speak fluent Irish, by the way, so would know that! But it's called Derry or Londonderry in English. I'm well aware that Derry isn't an actual 'translation' of Doire but rather a 'transmutation', to get technical about it! I was just saying the name Derry was based on the original Irish placename Doire. So what's your point?
8 Euro?!! I think you're mixing Ireland up with Iceland!! LOL. Because in Dublin, it's 5 or at most 6 Euro for a pint. In rural parts, it's cheaper at only 4 Euro. Salaries are generally higher in ROI anyway.
Can't you define yourself in terms other then being opposed to the Catholic community? You would be "driven out" in short order if you didn't have the British army to back you up sir.
prod kids attacked with snooker cues on buses, prod kids attacked at the halloween party at the guildhall, prod kids spat at singing carols in the shopping mall. it would appear derry has a big sectarian problem!.
It doesn't mean our day came it means it will come and come it shall, 90% of Derry is Catholic and they all refer to it as Derry where is your democracy at why not have a wee vote on it? GO FUCK YOURSELF!!!!
how is derry british?? its not even in britain. and i wonder hoe the english cunts would feel if the french invaded and renamed Leeds....parisleeds????? see how fuckin stupid it is?
great song for all traditions. conmaca is a dublin tinker, ballymun or some other midden. never been to northern ireland. ignore the gyppo scum, let him ride his horse around his garden.
The 13 apprentice boys where rebel scum who locked the gates against the lawful monarch King James. At least get your history right. King William was gay by the way.
Remember when the Catholics took over Derry and controlled it militarily? Ooops. I also loved it at the end when the british govt basically begged for a treaty. The Irish threw you out of Ireland in the easter rising and you were lucky you didn't get thrown out of No. Ireland. You didn't only cuz you got on your knees and begged'' Oooh please stop bombing our cities pleeease!'' Hahahaha

I'm from California and I recently found out that my great great grandfather, Thomas Moody, was from Derry, or Londonderry or Doire or whatever the real name is.by the way, how is doire pronounced? i would like to find more information on the city. I'm proud to be Irish.

You arent Irish you're american just because your genes drift you about doesnt mean you have citizenship so ye should stick were you are ;)

Well, everyone to their own opinion. If Derry is a bastardisation of Doire, is Londonderry not an even greater perversion of the original 'DOIRE'.
Anyway, each to his/her own.

There's little I can get 'wrong' when it comes to Irish, as I speak it fluently! Sure, it's common knowledge that the place names in all of Ireland aren't generally actual translations but simply Anglicization based on the original Irish place name. So, we're singing from the same hymn sheet, it would appear, unless I am misunderstanding your strange belligerent comment.
bacabu30 3 years ago
I don't understand what you're on about! I know quite well that Doire would actually mean 'Oak Grove', but it's not called Oakgrove in English. I speak fluent Irish, by the way, so would know that! But it's called Derry or Londonderry in English. I'm well aware that Derry isn't an actual 'translation' of Doire but rather a 'transmutation', to get technical about it! I was just saying the name Derry was based on the original Irish placename Doire. So what's your point?

rabarnes07 4 years ago
LOL. The song you chose even calls it "Derry city" instead of the artificial name 'Londonderry'!!
Its original name in Irish is Doire and that's Derry in English translation. There's not a lot that's 'London' about Derry! LOL

Cmon Londonderry you know where your heart is! Feck the fenians! Father Ted for Taoiseach

Lets join the irish republic and pay 8 euro a beer, best to stay in uk.
bocher222 4 years ago

The 13 apprentice boys where rebel scum who locked the gates against the lawful monarch King James. At least get your history right. King William was gay by the way.

It is Londonderry, why bring religion into this thread?
We are just celebrating what is a very important date in the Ulster/Scots calendar.
Got Bless the 13 Apprentice Boys.
Still British!
