Be careful in abandoned uranium mines. They can contain extreem levels of radon gas. Your clothing can also become contaminated.

According to the State DOGM radiology specialist, the radiation and radon levels in any of these mines never exceeded MSHA regulations.

@emike09fcmc I hope they are correct, but I am glad to hear that you are checking things out first. Truely, it sounds like fun to explore, but I would personally being a Geiger counter and scintillation counter... just in case.

Also, what if you set on a rock for a break and it just happened to be a betafite rock? Ouch.

They are sealing up abandoned mines in southern California, too. Such a shame to destroy these sites of historical importance. Can't that money be better spent on other things like crumbling highways, bridge repairs, freeway widening, more prisons, better schools, etc?
