These, JVC ha rx900 or Audio technica ath m50? I will use them for gaming mostly with a mixamp. Which are best? Could you put them in an order 1 is best, 3 is worst etc. Thanks
Please, what headphone is more recommended for games (Easier to find enemys on call of duty mw2 or others) The Tritton AX720 or the Audio Technica AD700?
Hey Bro, so i just got the AD700 headphones, and I am looking for an AMP/DAC option to connect by PS3, and I am seriously considering the TB DSS, since it is way cheaper than the Astro Mixamp, i don't really need the chat/game mixer thing, but i have been reading a lot of reviews on various forums, and some of them point out an audible hissing sound when AD700 are paired with the DSS. Can you let me know if it is true or not ? Thanks !!
I would get these headphones because of the amazing reviews, but WTF was Audio Technica thinking with the color choice? If you're going to experiment at least offer a typical alternative color (such as black) to compare the sales. I'm looking for a good set for music and gaming with the mixamp, and I thought these would be perfect except I wouldn't be caught dead with them in public.
@fedsanity When the hell would you bring them in public anyways? they're supposed to be used for private music listening and gaming, e.g. sitting in a chair listening to flac files with a receiver and a sound card, not going out in public and using with an ipod

I dunno about you but I just got a pair of theses and let me tell you they have BASS. They hit hard! Just dial up the EQ for more bass. I put theses babies on my XF-Fi Fatal1ty and whoa! Turned up the EQ for bass and the first thing I did was load up Brass Monkey from the Beatie Boys. Holy crap do these things hit hard! They sound amazing! This is w/o an amp btw. Imagine with one. O.o! Pick these bad boys up! @ only $89.00 its a STEAL!!
As far as bass goes...Typically, you want a nice even clear signal response across the spectrum. Artificial "thumping" of bass, while it might be desirable for some, isn't always a good thing. A flatter frequency response will provide a more accurate sound (as the mixer intended) and if you prefer more "thump", just dial up your EQ a bit. Personally, I'd rather start with accurate and dial in EQ than to have to try and EQ out the artificial coloring of the sound. Just my thoughts. FWIW.
i am sooooo glad i got these along with the mixamp. i used to use the hpa2/tritton 5.1 decoder set up that justintime1976 suggested. hpa2s are good, but the ad700 are so much better. in black ops, i can judge the distance of ememies much better. my k/d ratio improved alot. i quit playin back in feb and started again recently and i'm doin better than ever. if it wasn't for virtual haircut, i would have never given dolby headphone a shot.
@ratedtriplex haha thanks for your experience with the hpa2/tritton 5.1 decoder box. I also watched justintime1976 review on it and was curious if it was better than my ad700 astro mix amp set up.
@Fustercluck631 glad i could help. that's one thing that i dont remember justintime1976 mentioning, was the soundstage difference between dolby headphone and true 5.1, that's actually why i posted it. i liked the hpa2/tritton decoder set up, having bass was great, but i always felt something was missing, i sat there and tried to adjust time delay. after listening to virtual haircut, i realized what it was, sound was still coming from inside my head.
Astro wired Mixamp with ATH-AD700's & Labtec LVA-7330 mic. Dont have optical yet, but will tonight. I have video thru HDMI, and audio thru the red&white. A-Ts plugged into the headphone jack and the mic plugged into the PC jack. I got on MW2 & said my mic was on but it isnt picking up my voice. my settings (I'm on PS3) say its set up right. In & out are set to the mixamp, and audio is coming through the comp. cables. Why am I not getting sound? The mic works b/c I've used it on skype.
FYI these headphones are NOT comfortable. To give you a good analogy these feel like its feels when you wear a loose shoe. The 3d wing system is not nearly as comfortable and a real headband. The ear pieces are not very comfortable either. HD555 are WAY more comfortable. Unless you like listening to only classical music, forget this headphone.
Thank you , very good review I appreciate it. Wonder if you can do a review with these and the 7.1 Turtle beach dss it's $72 on amazon. I wonder how that competes with the astro mixamp.
With an appropriate equaliser curve, these things can pump an incredible amount of bass without distortion. So much so that they physically vibrate and move around.
Sure the natural characteristic is a bit lacking in bass, but everyone has a system-wide equaliser these days so it is hardly an issue when the drivers are capable of incredible bass, especially considering the highs remain just as good. You get the best of both worlds with these headphones.
I console game (Xbox 360 )mostly I own a Astro MixAmp & mixamp 5.8. I'm currently using HPA2 with my MixAmp with the HPX MixAmp adapter. I just wondering if Sennheiser HD595 or ATH AD700 better to use with the MixAmp. If so which headphones should I get HD595 or AD700. I don't care about mics just sound. I own the MW2 xbox mic to solve that problem or should I just stay with the HPA2 MixAmp SETUP. Please help me I'm so lost. I'm trying to order by this week. thank you in adv....
the ad 700has the best soundstage of the 2 so you can hear all the little details and footsteps clear as hell and the hd595 is a little all rounded sound with better bass

The A700 (note the absence of the "D" in the model #) is basically the same headphone but it's a closed headphone as opposed to this open version. You get more bass with the closed A700 model and you don't bother people who might be in the same room as you as it traps more sound from leaking. The other main difference between the two is the AD700 is slightly more comfortable since it has the velvet ear pads. If you are like these headphones and want a more bass then go for the A700 instead
How does the bass sound with these paired with the Earforce DSS?
Is there a big improvement with the bass?
Ive bought the Sharkoon X-tactic 5.1's as my entry level headset, but im now looking for a headset with better a soundstage and bass, this is where the AD700 paired with the Earforce DSS comes to mind.
do you have experience with the senn hd595s? i ask because im its one of the cans im considering buying. that along with ath-m50 and a few others. mostly for gaming and music, i mostly play fps games and i listen to almost all types of music but mostly hip hop, reggae, techno/dubstep.
I found one of your reviews online and it had 10 beaches/ headphones and I really want these and I'm probably getting en for christmas but how do you use it with the 360 without a mix amp or anything?
@Zillamp3z He said in the review the Sennheiser 595's are better for an all-round experience involving music, movies and gaming. And that the Audio Technica AD700's are better for just gaming.
hi steggy, i've been reading up on the forums n the general consensus is that the AD700 is the best bang for the buck cans for gaming. i also read that you've personally used senn hd595's for awhile, which i currently have for gaming/music. i was jst wondering if you or anyone here cud tell me how much better the AD700s are than the HD595 for gaming? is there a huge gap btwn the 2 bc of the AD700's massive soundstage or do you think the HD595 can hold its own for the most part? thanks
I think the bottom end of the AD700's may have been somewhat limited by the output of your computer monitor's headphone jack. Those are rather compromised and not the best way to drive good headphones.
I suggest a nice dedicated Headphone amp like the
Little Dot MK III Tube Headphone Amplifier / Pre-amplifier
i own the ad700's bigger cousin: ad900. i prefer it over the ad900 because there's less discernible grain in it. (then again, my ears are sensitive to grain so this could be a moot point for some.) there's also more substance in almost all frequencies while keeping the overall sonical coherency.
i don't wear it to school as i'll probably get beaten up doing so but it's just excellent for critical listening in bed. i love the ad series as they fare very well with even portable devices.
that's true, i didnt imply that k701 are better for gaming, i was pointing out that the ad700 are better for music than for games, and that the source he used is not suitable for a review(except that case only).
have u ever play crossfire? do u think this headphone is good for this game? even in ghost mode? (can't see the ghost in this mode if they r noy moving, so we have to pingpoint where the ghost at by their breathing or footstep). if not do u have any other suggestion? thx for spending ur time to read my message XP
A beetter suggestion for Gaming, music, and movies would be something like a JVC RX700/900 which I consider to be some of the best values for headphones on the market. I will note though that they are large and not for that lay down in your bed and go to sleep while listening to music though.
just bought myself the Audio Technica M50 which was listed at the same price bracket @ $115 at Head-Fi forum headphone guide. I wasn't too worried about on-ear open style because the comfort has been raved about but I do appreciate the isolation of closed-ear. Since I am a gamer I really considered these but the bass loss was a problem. Thanks for the vid tho
I had these fucking things for about a year now and I only just found out from watching this review that I could unscrew the 6.3mm jack and find a 3.5 underneath! I actually bought a 6.3 to 3.5 adaptor so I could use them in my soundcard...so I was effectively going 3.5>6.3>3.5.
Hey Steggy nice review dude. Would you recommend this AD700 with a Zalman clip on mic (or anything of that nature), or a Turtlebeach HPX? (Voice comms. isn't too important for me)
I finaly bought these last week, and I have the same head fit problem as jathalo! I have a small head when it comes to headphones, and these are way too big for me. The sound is excellent, very smooth and natural with a large soundstage, but... there is almost no bass! I prefer the "meatier" and crisp sound of my Shure SRH440. So, I will not keep the AD700.
good review but with nice headphones the source it's using is just as important and some seem to forget that. like your soundcard, amp, receiver, ect. also when it comes to music or movies too.is it compressed mp3 or uncompressed AC3 or flac, ect. also people need to look at the impedance also on headphones cause that will tell you how much power it'll need to be driven in the drivers to fully function. the senns 595 is best to be driven with an amp/reciever/good soundcard then an ipod, monitor, ect.
Ok so I bought these today and they straight up do not fit... there is a major gap between the padding and my head.... maybe i have a small head lol but they fit ok when I wear a hat... I also own the hd 555 but idk i tested them both and it seems the sound is definetely more clear and defined in the ad700s however the loose ass fit is not so good. if i tip my head forward i am sure they will fall off... idk if i am willing to wear them with a hat all the time... hmmm should i just take themback
The ad700's are considered the one of the best GAMING headsets for games like MW2, BFBC2, other FPS games etc. They still have good sound quality for music although the bass is a little low(can just EQ the bass on your comp). but not as good as other headphones
@Ambrotosium The A700 (note the absence of the "D" in the model #) is the same headphone but it's a closed headphone as opposed to this open version. You get more bass with the closed A700 model and you don't bother people who might be in the same room as you as it traps more sound from leaking. dude i'm pretty sure the 595 isn't as nice as the ad700. it has a more pronounced low-end but most of the comparisons i've read indicate that the ad700 is clearer and more refined overall and that the superior soundstage makes them better for gaming, regarding positional audio effects. i don't think the difference is clearly stated in the video, i just don't want people to pay 2x as much for the 595s thinking that it's flat out better than the ad700, and to know that they are making a compromise
Are these better for gaming than the Sennheiser Pc-350 or Sennheiser 280 Pro? Which is better out of the 3? I mostly play games like call of duty 4 and 6, and battlefield, so I need to hear footsteps very clearly. Thanks.
Very nice review. I was first goin for hd595's until i saw this. In fact, i want headphones with very precise directional positioning effects. If u have tryed both, do you think the 595's will be better for directional positioning?
I bought the AD900s, Zalman Mic and an Auzentech Xfi Forte 7.1 sound card (for the headphone amp). And yeah going from cheap mainstream headsets makes a massive difference. The sound stage REALLY does give you an advantage in games. I found this most useful in Bad Company 2. e.g if you and an enemy are running around a supply crate or a small house... you'll know exactly where they are, how fast they are moving and when and where to point the trigger.
dude get your self a set of turtle beach x41s the plug these babys dierectly in to the surround sound processor. the sound amazing. way better than a surround sound speaker system. the price is not cheap but its worth it.
I've done that before, it really isn't anything different from the Astro mixamp, but with the Astro Mixamp I can use the AD700 as a headset, and the mixamp doesn't give off an RF signal that screws my internet up.
@MLGSteggy hes Steggy I just got this from amazon probably gonna get them in a week .But i have a question, can you hear footsteps in halo reach, i'am going to connect the ad700s to my stereo system connected to my xbox, i can crank up the volume pretty high, but for christmas i'll get the astro mixamp... well please reply!!
Those are gimmicky pieces of crap with no sound quality.
Any headphone with a built in dac or claiming to be anything more than 2-channel is garbage.
AKGK701/2's are the best price:performance ratio headphones you'll find.
A/AD700 are cheap and ok for gaming, but you can go even cheaper with the JVC clones, which afaik, use the same driver (there are cabinet differences though).

@canitakeyourpic I have the Turtle Beach X11. I use them for convenience, but they're pretty awful. I've never heard so much white noise off headphones before (actually, the white noise comes from the amp). The mic quality is also pretty poor, and it is extremely susceptible to ground loops. The AD700 blow Turtle Beach headphones out of the water, though at a much higher price considering you need to pick up a mixamp as well.
hi again, earlier i have asked about astro mixamp, but later i thoughts, would i get the same effect of 5.1 suround sound by using dvd amp, whick got heaphones jack and suports 5.1?
i wonder what will you say about akg k701/702 if u made a review on them. these headphones are amazing and they have no competitor in their price range. gaming is a secondary use, these are made for music.
how could u coment on the SQ when you pluged them into you monitor . this review is verry dissapointing
@MLGSteggy it's technically better to just plug it straight into the headphone jack of on the back of the sound card. that's the shortest connection with the highest quality links, completely bypassing your monitor, and consequently minimizing any potential signal degradation.
@TheButchX The AKG701 need a really good amp to power them. They're also a very neutral headphone, which also means they wouldn't be super suitable for gaming (which requires a warmer and bassier sound). In my experience, it's best to keep one set of cans for music, and one for gaming.
PERFECT review. I agree 100% with all your comments and it's spot on with what I think mostly. I've found these to be a steal at $90 and for the lack of bass I just change my EQ settings and that seems to help. These can also be powered without an amp just fine for anyone that's curious. The only negative for me is that my head is too small so I had to bend the headband wires to get a perfect fit.
And dont let the lack of bass fool you. They can take a fair bit through EQ. Even better when amped.

Would you say that there are as good as Sennheiser HD558/598? Manly for music.
derbigpr500 1 year ago

@Zillamp3z He said in the review the Sennheiser 595's are better for an all-round experience involving music, movies and gaming. And that the Audio Technica AD700's are better for just gaming.

hi steggy, i've been reading up on the forums n the general consensus is that the AD700 is the best bang for the buck cans for gaming. i also read that you've personally used senn hd595's for awhile, which i currently have for gaming/music. i was jst wondering if you or anyone here cud tell me how much better the AD700s are than the HD595 for gaming? is there a huge gap btwn the 2 bc of the AD700's massive soundstage or do you think the HD595 can hold its own for the most part? thanks
sjsumalpong 1 year ago
hey you should mention that AD700's anemic bass can be resolved with a good amp.

(then again, my ears are sensitive to grain so this could be a moot point for some.) there's also more substance in almost all frequencies while keeping the overall sonical coherency.
i don't wear it to school as i'll probably get beaten up doing so but it's just excellent for critical listening in bed. i love the ad series as they fare very well with even portable devices.
dissembled 1 year ago
@ ex0du5.
that's true, i didnt imply that k701 are better for gaming, i was pointing out that the ad700 are better for music than for games, and that the source he used is not suitable for a review(except that case only).

have u ever play crossfire? do u think this headphone is good for this game? even in ghost mode? (can't see the ghost in this mode if they r noy moving, so we have to pingpoint where the ghost at by their breathing or footstep). if not do u have any other suggestion? thx for spending ur time to read my message XP
OoOuroborosoO 1 year ago

So, I will not keep the AD700.
kloug2006 1 year ago
good review but with nice headphones the source it's using is just as important and some seem to forget that. like your soundcard, amp, receiver, ect. also when it comes to music or movies too.is it compressed mp3 or uncompressed AC3 or flac, ect. also people need to look at the impedance also on headphones cause that will tell you how much power it'll need to be driven in the drivers to fully function. the senns 595 is best to be driven with an amp/reciever/good soundcard then an ipod, monitor, ect.

Ambrotosium 1 year ago 11
@Ambrotosium you shouldn't need to touch an EQ if you have an AMP > DAC or a decent sound card to drive the headphones.
Squa7ch 1 year ago

overall a very good video review. good format, knowledgeable and well-spoken.
f4phantom2500 1 year ago
dude i'm pretty sure the 595 isn't as nice as the ad700. it has a more pronounced low-end but most of the comparisons i've read indicate that the ad700 is clearer and more refined overall and that the superior soundstage makes them better for gaming, regarding positional audio effects. i don't think the difference is clearly stated in the video, i just don't want people to pay 2x as much for the 595s thinking that it's flat out better than the ad700, and to know that they are making a compromise

Very comfortable! even it dont have height adjusting, but it fit just nice to anyone unless u r a kid.
This head phone sound is very bright, the only bad thing is it just lack of the beat of bass. but it doesnt mean it doesnt have bass =)

Are these better for gaming than the Sennheiser Pc-350 or Sennheiser 280 Pro? Which is better out of the 3? I mostly play games like call of duty 4 and 6, and battlefield, so I need to hear footsteps very clearly. Thanks.
OMGitsSHAHN 1 year ago
@OMGitsSHAHN It is, pc350 and HD280 are closed-back headphones, and their soundstage is lacking compared to HD555 and ATH-AD700.

Very nice review. I was first goin for hd595's until i saw this. In fact, i want headphones with very precise directional positioning effects. If u have tryed both, do you think the 595's will be better for directional positioning?
BadBramiBoy 1 year ago

@canitakeyourpic Turtle Beaches are for people who can't afford Astros.
jesweeten 1 year ago
@canitakeyourpic I have the Turtle Beach X11. I use them for convenience, but they're pretty awful. I've never heard so much white noise off headphones before (actually, the white noise comes from the amp). The mic quality is also pretty poor, and it is extremely susceptible to ground loops. The AD700 blow Turtle Beach headphones out of the water, though at a much higher price considering you need to pick up a mixamp as well.

i wonder what will you say about akg k701/702 if u made a review on them. these headphones are amazing and they have no competitor in their price range. gaming is a secondary use, these are made for music.
how could u coment on the SQ when you pluged them into you monitor . this review is verry dissapointing

@TheButchX
...Because I have my Xbox 360 hooked up to my monitor, and my AD700's hooked up to its headphone jack so I could hear the game?
MLGSteggy 1 year ago
@MLGSteggy it's technically better to just plug it straight into the headphone jack of on the back of the sound card. that's the shortest connection with the highest quality links, completely bypassing your monitor, and consequently minimizing any potential signal degradation.
f4phantom2500 1 year ago
