can i point something out? michael emerson made the character of benjamin linus too clever. It's consistently surprising when he DOESN'T have a way out of his problems. This, of course, is no judgement against michael emerson as a person or an actor; he played the character too cleverly because he IS more clever than the character. Unfortunately, In the future, if Lost ever becomes relevant to literature, HIS performance (rather than the writers) will be criticized.

I disagree; it would get somewhat stagnant if he had an answer for EVERYTHING. I personally think that it's not about whether or not he's the cleverest SOB that makes his portrayal good. What makes Ben Linus such an amazing character is the mystery about him. Even now, you still don't know whose side he's on, whether or not he's good or bad. You just don't know.
