What Benn does not appear to realize in his Critique of the Thatcher Revolution is that By Privatization and shrinking the state they were empowering the individual in being able to Live Their own lives rather than be told what to do by Government
@antncs6 It sounds like you are analysing it by the views of classical liberalism? To an extent what you say it's true, but privatisation also leads to high economic power and influence which is held by comities which the people didn't vote for.
@antncs6 But empowering how many individuals ? The CEOs, the shareholders? We've seen in the last 3 years that the free market doesn't work - or hasn't the recession touched you ? Read EbsNhexz's comment above and listen to the video from 4.00 - 5.00mins again.
I am a conservative, but very sympathetic to his critique of the EU, although not neccesarily because it is a capitalist plot, but because it is anti-democratic.
Thatcherism was less of a reaction to economic strife than we are told iit was, to quote eric evans "The sick man of europe, neded thatcherism no more than a man with a cold needs a leg amputated"
Tony Benn is not telling the full story. He needs to explain why the welfare state was wound back by Thatcher and Reagan: because it was simply not economically sustainable!
there are many types of democracy. when he speaks about the welfare state he is talking about Social Democracy which is the belief that the public sphere is what is important and that government should focus on the collective rather than the individual. What you are prolly familiar with is US Liberal democracy which focuses on the individual and the free market. Liberal democracy has good points but appears to me to be a weapon of the elites to reclaim their lost power. next comes fascism.
Democracy is just the means to forming a regime, a dictator could do the same and there would be no difference in practice, likewise a democracy could happily elect all manner of regime and still be called a democracy. Democracy is ideologically neutral, aside from the necessary lack of restrictions on the media.
yes you r right, im studying democracy at uni now and im amazed how brainwashed i , and i assume most of us have been. it is a universal term, no one these days professes to be anything other than a democrat. Democracy is the biggest hoax and contradiction. a complete paradox. No wonder it is so little understood. Bring back the republic, rule by law!
"free" enterprise or "free trade" is merely the freedom for established capital to expand and monopolise even further. The doctrines of neoliberalism aided the vast centralisation of private capital that we see today.
@Tougemaster06 Actually if your looking for a generic term to describe Tony Benn hes a Social Democrat. Democratic Socialists are those who seek to overthrow an existing system through revolution and establish a totally new regime (like the Bolsheviks in the Russian revolution), Social democrats work within the existing system and seek to create a better more democratic society through reform. Think of it this way: Social Democracy - SD - Should be Done, Democratic Socialism - DS - is Damn Silly
I guess it's important to acknowledge that while we have achieved a level of democracy, there are higher levels to be obtained unless we are too complacent!
@xxxBAINxxx Nonsense.Mrs Thatcher fought vigorously for democracy. Remember "NO, NO, NO"? that related to the ceding of sovereign power to the European Comission.

It strikes me as unimportant that the wealth gap is widening as long as the poor are getting richer. For the record though I admire Mr Benn very much and love hearing him speak.
This doco is like Benn's British version of Zinn's "A People's History of the United States". Different country, but just as fascinating and important.

This man seems to be confusing democracy with socialism.
What about civil liberty, and free enterprise, or are they just tricks set up by the great and the good?

Go ahead and use any label you want, but the people under the system he talks, are more free than what we have in America.
