Whenever a currency is not backed by gold or silver it fails. Throughout history this has happened time and time again. The average lifespan of a countries economy when it goes off gold or silver is between 20-50 years. The USA has been off the gold standard for 40 years as of 2010. Could we push it another 10 years? Such as Yorkshire Puddings for 4 use to be 49p where I live now it's gone up to 55p and Milk use to be £130 where I got it from now it's gone up to £1.35 just like Sainsbury's is £135. What's On TV Magazines use to cost 35p now it's 38p. It may not seem to have gone up that much but yes prices have increased in food. It is happening as we speak. From what I understand is that the gas price at the gas pump is based on OIL price 60 days prior. We are now around $3.5 per gallon which is based on oil price that was traded around $85 to $90 per barrel. I figure that when oil price is at $150 per barrel, gas price will be at $6 per gallon 2 months later. I think when gas hit that price at gas station, USA will have a big crisis and collapse. Any comment?
Although I think $6 gas/gallon would suck real bad, I don't think it would cause an Economic collapse right away. Look at European countries where gas on avg is $5-7/gallon. Now if gas prices went upto $15-20 then yes we would be in trouble. But hopefully our Govn't will be smart enough to invest heavily in green technology, wind, and solar for energy.

I understand where you're coming from, although on the issue of energy independence I think the govt could make inroads by establishing an environment that gives incentives to the development of green technology, while establishing more jobs here. The incentive could be subsidies or tax cuts for businesses that invest in green tech. You have to understand that in Europe, most people don't even need cars. They can take the bus, the subway, and trains to get to work. Even in Asia, people don't live very far from where they work. In Europe and Asia people don't live in the suburbs and work in the cities. They live in the cities where they work. In New York city, you don't need a car, the concept is the same. Most Asian and European nations made some heavy investments in alternative energies, unlike the USA.

The federal reserve haa made gold and silver no longer legal tender. So its not really gonna matter whether you have paper or metal, becuase its all corrupted. And by the way you cant eat paper or metal. If you research gold and silver prices during the depression silver was only worth .54 cents, gold was only $20.54. The average house back then cost $15,000. Cars cost $2500. Im not gonna pay 9-12 dollars an ounce of silver that was only supposed to be worth $.54, and gold $20.54.

dubai is one of the largest (if not the largest) gold markets in the world. i've got family there, and some of the industries are actually prospering during these difficult times. i currently live in the uk, but if prices and taxes keep rocketing the way they are, i'm leaving for dubai or qatar.
BTW they've got TWO palm islands, and one "the world" island, and the construction of the world's largest skyscraper has already started. all that and dubai has no petrol.

Me too live in England and I've noticed the rising pries in foods. Such as Yorkshire Puddings for 4 use to be 49p where I live now it's gone up to 55p and Milk use to be £130 where I got it from now it's gone up to £1.35 just like Sainsbury's is £135. What's On TV Magazines use to cost 35p now it's 38p. It may not seem to have gone up that much but yes prices have increased in food. It is happening as we speak. John Kerry hinted on the speech of the Support for Obama to be Presi in Nov.

You need pre 1965 junk silver to be worth a little more. That's the date they took out most of the silver backing our money. A pre1965 quarter is worth about $3.00+ today.

they can revoke your credit line, they can take all of your money, regardless if it is silver or gold.....if you live in a city, you are doomed. if you do not know where your food comes from, you are doomed.....money is not survival, remember we are living creatures - your option is to discard this whole monetary system and do things for yourself/in community with others.

From what I understand is that the gas price at the gas pump is based on OIL price 60 days prior. We are now around $3.5 per gallon which is based on oil price that was traded around $85 to $90 per barrel. I figure that when oil price is at $150 per barrel, gas price will be at $6 per gallon 2 months later. I think when gas hit that price at gas station, USA will have a big crisis and collapse. Any comment?

Although I think $6 gas/gallon would suck real bad, I don't think it would cause an Economic collapse right away. Look at European countries where gas on avg is $5-7/gallon. Now if gas prices went upto $15-20 then yes we would be in trouble. But hopefully our Govn't will be smart enough to invest heavily in green technology, wind, and solar for energy.

I understand where you're coming from, although on the issue of energy independence I think the govt could make inroads by establishing an environment that gives incentives to the development of green technology, while establishing more jobs here. The incentive could be subsidies or tax cuts for businesses that invest in green tech. A good article to read about this would be the recent New York Times article by op-ed columnist Thomas Friedman titled "Dumb as We Wanna Be"

In this he discusses how US companies that are investing in green tech are building factories overseas in countries that are more welcoming to green technology. For instance the US solar company First Solar has built a new factory in Germany, which is providing jobs that are very much needed back here. Germany although very similar to the US economically has established a 20 year Solar-incentive program, whereas the United States has a program that runs only 2 years that will expire soon.

You have to understand that in Europe, most people don't even need cars. They can take the bus, the subway, and trains to get to work. Even in Asia, people don't live very far from where they work. In Europe and Asia people don't live in the suburbs and work in the cities. They live in the cities where they work. In New York city, you don't need a car, the concept is the same. Most Asian and European nations made some heavy investments in alternative energies, unlike the USA.

He speaks the truth...we are headed for a major economic collapse. The signs are everywhere. Stock up on canned foods, sacks of rice, beans etc. Food inflation is much higher than government tells you. The price of rice has doubled within the last year...stock up now so you will not be sorry later

I am still able for the most part to buy nearly a week's worth of groceries with only $20. I don't see the inflating food prices. Although I agree, it could get pretty ugly.

I mean, I am still able to buy loafs of bread that cost less than $1 and it is of great quality. Eggs too. And I am poor. I see what you are saying though. I am pretty sure it will catch up with me eventually. I haven't noticed any drastic decline of purchasing power with my money.
