Joe Bataan was that dude before this joint was released. He covered "Crystal Blue Persuasion" It was "rhythmized beautifully. The first cut was good but Joe Bataan's became a classic for the R&B folks. It had a soulful vibe bigtime. Also, at that time I think it was considered a "let's all come together" type of song. It's one of my favorites from an era when there was just so much going in the world and more particularly here in the U.S.
Come see Joe 9/10/11 at Pt. Fermin Park, San Pedro CA for the 20th Annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture. It's a $9 ticket...cheap compared to other venues.
Just saw Joe and his band do this in Central Pk in NYC last night. Didnt matter if you hispanic, black,or white,Joe rocked the park. We love Joe,cause he's one of our own.
Joe Bataan, The King of Latin Soul, performing at the Galaxy Concert Theatre in Santa Ana, California, on Saturday, August 13, 2011. On the same bill..from Houston, Texas...VUDU CAFE, featuring Jesse Flores. AND........The East Los Blues Band with some of the top musicians in the country. Tickets on sale now at the Galaxy box office and all TicketMaster locations. Another Drake Entertainment Production.
Thanks for posting this joint on here. I was in pre-school when this came out. If I'm not mistaken,I either think or believe this can also be good for B-Boys or Lockers to use when they get down.
Great dance groove - we play both the original 7" by Deodato & this one on Mericana records label (1973). Check out The Bottle by Joe Bataan & Brother to Brother as well. Check out Charo's 1978 Latin Strut rip, Dance a Little Bit Closer. Thank you for posting this festive & classic song. DAVEDJ
Hi, If you love music like this find 'The Rare Groove Soul and Boogie Podcast' via @raregrooveprops on Twitter or searching for our Facebook group. Free soulful downloads and hour long mixes.
I do not know which was first, this one or Deodatos' Super strut but they are both great work.Joes' is more Latino salsa-ish.Deodatos' is more funky Jazzy-ish.They both came out in '73. Enjoyed it.Peace.JA.
Is Joe Bataan implying that his "Latin Strut" is the original for Emur deodato's "Super Strut"??? This for me would be a bombshell, indeed. He should mention this!
This is an earlier version of this this song, but originally done by a group called SANGRIA, which actually had a guy named Andy Hernandez (Coati Mundi) on keyboard. Written by Wil Hawes Jr. No Deodato did not do the original.
@byrd1nypa. Thanks for clearing-up this issue. Like so many many musical opportunists (though, mind you, I admire him greatly, especially for opening up latin compos in the US which otherwise would never have gotten a broader airing, ) Emur Deodato (and also in this category Sergio Mendez, he who has usurped many of Josw Ben Jor's music and fame,) came to fame by exhibiting the compositions of othersfor their great, "super hits" (the other, of course was STEVIE, THAT MOST 'WONEROUS ONE'!!!
See Joe Bataan at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana on Sunday, May 30. This is an exclusive performance commanded by Joe himself. Tickets on sale now at the Galaxy Theater box office and TicketMaster. This is a Drake Entertainment production.
This a very unique brother. I appreciate that an Afro-Filipino from the Bronx has been able to reach so many Chicanos on the West coast through some positive music.
Now, this is hot! Can't wait to work with JOE BATAAN on April 17, 2010 in Hackensack, NJ at MAKING CROSSROADS 2. He performs so rarely in NJ. A true privilege for us!
The f;ute probably done by Robert Rodriguez, gui†ar must be Wil Hawes Jr., who wrote this, and was also done before this with a band called Sangria, I played trumpet with, these guys and with Joe B, on the St Latins Day Massacre album, also Eddie Church on trombone, Dennis Harris on sax.
In 1973, he helped coin the phrase "salsoul," lending its name to his first post-Fania album. Along with the Cayre brothers, he co-founded Salsoul label, though later sold out his interest. He recorded three albums for Salsoul and several singles, including "Rap-O Clap-O," from 1979 which became an early hip hop hit.
an album this is on is called: Kool It, soul jazz and funk go latin. it's a great compilation. it's on amazon. if you need more help send me a message and i'll send you link etc. hope this helps.
