Even though I had to mute the audio almost 2 years ago, this video has been watched tens of thousands of times since then, all the way through to the end! Many people seem to be doing their own syncing at home.

Yes, you're right. This version used to get a lot of airplay in the 90s, but you never hear it anymore, now that the Groban and Celine Dion versions dominate the airwaves. Warner and other music sellers have got no idea. I upgraded to Win7 and my electronic music licences didn't "upgrade" and BigPond Music won't reset them, like they once did, and I was told to re-purchase, and like hell, I won't. So I came looking for Michael Crawford's Oh Holy Night and Warners don't want you to listen which might lead to a (re-)purchase.
I love how everybody in radio forgot about Crawfords version as being the best ever when Josh Groban released his. BTW Thanks Warner This beats any Nazi book burning you cheap bastards.
It's also on Michael Crawford's "A Christmas Album." You can download this one track from the Crawford CD, but for some reason, you have to download the entire Foster CD (no individual tracks available).

I agree with you. I'm not saying that people should just upload anything. But, Warner definitely takes things overboard. In contrast, others are alittle more relaxed. have you ever visited Warners Youtube site? All theyv'e got are a bunch of 1/2 minute Trailers. While, Universals site offers plenty of complete videos. SO, although Universal also takes down stuff, at least, they're more relaxed.
Actually, Universal and Sony have worked out a deal with YouTube, and they're allowing their songs to be re-posted (for now, at least). They insert those links to Amazon/itunes so people can buy downloads (folks, use those links sometimes if you want these vids to stay here). But Warner and YT don't have a deal yet. Negotiations broke down in December 08, and they're still at an impasse.
I'm glad you kept the video up after Warner told you to lose the audio, because it's good for people to see how petty the big labels can be; their actions can only give them bad publicity.
Actually, I had planned to take the video down a few weeks after I removed the audio, but for some reason, people kept watching it, and are STILL watching it. All the way through to the end! It's had more views since I removed the audio than it had when the audio was still playing. Go figure. I think a lot of people have the CD at home, and they synch it up with the video so that they can "watch" Michael sing.
Man, this is disappointing. But you also have to remember than just like the record companies, some artist themselves feel like they are being riped-off !

Universal Music Group and Sony Music Group have apparently worked out a deal with YouTube, because they are allowing their songs to be posted again (at least for now). However, Warner Music Group (which owns this song) has not worked out a deal, so all Warner songs are still banned from YT. Let's hope they reach an agreement soon.

My Dad works in the music industry and confirmed it is the record companies doing it...not Michael. LOL, I used to do the same thing. I would put the tape in the VCR with the volume turned down, and I'd play the CD and sync everything up until it sounded like Michael was singing in my living room. :)

they are stupid when they block things. seeing it on youtube is good advertising and sometimes I buy a cd or dvd wanting the high quality version based on the low quality version on youtube. they only shoot themselves in the foot when they block cause otherwise, i'd never know about the video and even less, be drawn to buy it later.
I agree. I've bought several MP3s and CDs of music after seeing & hearing it on YouTube. Sometimes it's new stuff I haven't heard before, and sometimes it's old stuff that I haven't heard in years. You would think the record companies would appreciate the free advertising....
Why are you being so stinky about this? We have paid our $14.99 multiple times over in some cases. And as stated in some of the comments, being able to see the video with it's rightful audio track has resulted in additional sales. Isn't that what your businesses desperately need. Instead of taking your perceived pound of flesh, aka pennies on the play, be grateful people are interested and want to see and hear the music at the same time. The sales will come.

I agree. And this keeps getting sillier. They've now added links to Amazon and Itunes under the view screen so that people can buy a download of the song. OK, fine. But they added those links AFTER I deleted the audio. Nobody can hear it anymore. Go figure.
I expected those links to appear before Christmas while the video was getting thousands of views, but they never did. Why bother now? It seems like the different departments at the record company don't coordinate with each other.

You're welcome! It seems that all of us who were lucky enough to record this special back in '93 treasure our old VHS tapes. It's still a mystery why a quality show like this hasn't had a video release in 15 years, when so many other shows of lesser quality are out there already.
I have been wanting to see this again since 1993. I'm glad I got to see it a few times before they made you cut the audio. What I don't understand is why they won't let this stay if they aren't going to put it out on video. I own the CD - but the video is still something special.

OceanKingNY: This video was made while standing in front of a bluescreen - it is not Michael who is moving, but the the camera as it zooms in on an ever-changing blue screen sceen. As for the performance, it gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it - I cannot even imagine how this performance could ever be improved upon!!!
I don't think it's a bluescreen. This set was used as the backdrop for all of the songs performed on this special. It was decorated and lit differently to match the mood of each song. The area behind Michael as he stands on the balcony is where the orchestra sat while David Foster conducted "Carol of the Bells." And the area with the candles at the beginning was also used by Johnny Mathis, Vanessa Williams, the Winans, & Wynonna while they sang their songs.
It looks to me like Michael is actually singing along with the recording here - even though there was no microphone on the set to pick up his voice. Many singers prefer to do this than to try to silently mouth the words, which often looks phony. My guess is that this song has so many dramatic highlights, that there was no way Michael could fake it, so he had to sing along to recapture the mood he had in the recording studio.
As for the move to the balcony: it must be Christmas magic!
This version just brings tear to my eyes and I don't like Christmas music. Wow. Just incredible--like the previous poster, it makes me want to weep. Bravo Mr. Crawford.
Dear "Bric"...have faith. Michael has been back in the USA for most of the Summer and was meeting with production people in London before that and production people in L.A. most of the Summer and Fall. In fact he treated fans to a special Lunch and day with him in Long Beach, Ca. this August and just sent a wonderful Christmas message to all his fans thru the MCIFA. He also talked about the PBS special in a letter on the back of the newest issue of "Notes". I think we will see that special soon.

I agree...Michael has a fantastic voice and hes great to look at too! Actually "Phantomsith" EVERYBODY was lip-synching on this special as well as on the TSO special including TSO and jewel. They have to because of the fact that it's a taped special and not a concert special. It's because of technical demands. IT is Michaels voice though and he did record it himself so nobody else sang for him on the CD or here. MC has a great voice in general! Bravo MC. God has blessed you with a special gift.
Oh, I know Michael's voice when I here it, I grew up with his Phantom of the Opera in my ears after my grandmother bought the cassette in 94...last time the tour was in town*sigh*. Alas, I was just saying that he learned something between this special and the one in 07. Sadly, I saw neither special because one, I was...4 when this one came out, and last years, well, I never knew it was on, so I can't say if the others singer synched or not.
There are certain times a performer sings a song and they fit, hand in glove, in such a way that it makes you wonder if the writer had this voice in mind when they wrote the song. This is such a matchup. There have been others sing it and there will be more yet who do, but this is the pinnacle of fhis song.

The first time I heard this version of one of my favorite Christmas carols, I was in a car with my foster brothers, returning from Christmas shopping. I think it was the year the David Foster album was first released. I made my brothers stop talking until it was over. It took my very breath away, and I wept openly. After all these years and hearing many different versions, Michael's remains the best and most beautiful I have ever heard. His is the voice not only of The Phantom, but of an angel.

There has never been another Phantom like the original, MC, even though the role has been sung by many talented men. And though I have heard many different versions of this lovely carol performed by many talented people, NONE OF THEM touches Michael's. This version lifts you so high you have to look down to see Heaven. Unbelievable. Beautiful beyond words. Brings tears to my eyes every singel time I hear it..... every time.

I know that many people are Josh Groban fans. I will say that he has a certain purity and pleasantness to his voice. He has technical ability. But in nearly everything I've ever heard him sing, what he lacks for me is passion, heart. Michael Crawford has NO problems with this. As with the Phantom, he sweeps you up into the emotion of the song with a power few possess. His is a rare and exquisite gift, and we are all blessed to be able to share in it as fans.

Yes, you're right. This version used to get a lot of airplay in the 90s, but you never hear it anymore, now that the Groban and Celine Dion versions dominate the airwaves. Warner and other music sellers have got no idea. I upgraded to Win7 and my electronic music licences didn't "upgrade" and BigPond Music won't reset them, like they once did, and I was told to re-purchase, and like hell, I won't. So I came looking for Michael Crawford's Oh Holy Night and Warners don't want you to listen which might lead to a (re-)purchase.

I agree with you. I'm not saying that people should just upload anything. But, Warner definitely takes things overboard. In contrast, others are alittle more relaxed. have you ever visited Warners Youtube site? All theyv'e got are a bunch of 1/2 minute Trailers. While, Universals site offers plenty of complete videos. SO, although Universal also takes down stuff, at least, they're more relaxed.

Actually, Universal and Sony have worked out a deal with YouTube, and they're allowing their songs to be re-posted (for now, at least). They insert those links to Amazon/itunes so people can buy downloads (folks, use those links sometimes if you want these vids to stay here). But Warner and YT don't have a deal yet. Negotiations broke down in December 08, and they're still at an impasse.

Actually, I had planned to take the video down a few weeks after I removed the audio, but for some reason, people kept watching it, and are STILL watching it. All the way through to the end! It's had more views since I removed the audio than it had when the audio was still playing. Go figure. I think a lot of people have the CD at home, and they synch it up with the video so that they can "watch" Michael sing.

Universal Music Group and Sony Music Group have apparently worked out a deal with YouTube, because they are allowing their songs to be posted again (at least for now). However, Warner Music Group (which owns this song) has not worked out a deal, so all Warner songs are still banned from YT. Let's hope they reach an agreement soon.

You can see this same song done by artists like Groban, Celine Dion and by David Phelps and the posters of those videos are not attacked by the record companys and made to take the videos down. they are stupid when they block things. seeing it on youtube is good advertising and sometimes I buy a cd or dvd wanting the high quality version based on the low quality version on youtube. they only shoot themselves in the foot when they block cause otherwise, i'd never know about the video and even less, be drawn to buy it later.

Why are you being so stinky about this? We have paid our $14.99 multiple times over in some cases. And as stated in some of the comments, being able to see the video with it's rightful audio track has resulted in additional sales. Isn't that what your businesses desperately need. Instead of taking your perceived pound of flesh, aka pennies on the play, be grateful people are interested and want to see and hear the music at the same time. The sales will come.

I agree. And this keeps getting sillier. They've now added links to Amazon and Itunes under the view screen so that people can buy a download of the song. OK, fine. But they added those links AFTER I deleted the audio. Nobody can hear it anymore. Go figure.
I expected those links to appear before Christmas while the video was getting thousands of views, but they never did. Why bother now? It seems like the different departments at the record company don't coordinate with each other.

I have been wanting to see this again since 1993. I'm glad I got to see it a few times before they made you cut the audio. What I don't understand is why they won't let this stay if they aren't going to put it out on video. I own the CD - but the video is still something special.

Yes, it's hard to understand. It's been 15 years without a video release of this excellent performance, so what's the harm of sharing my old VHS tape? It's not like this upload is cutting into their DVD sales.
In fact, how much money did they earn from this upload in CD sales? I'm sure many people who watched it were inspired to buy the David Foster and Michael Crawford Christmas albums.
Oh well. I guess they have their reasons. At least they let it play through Christmas weekend.

Actually I just bought the CD because of this video. I always thought O Holy Night sung by Michael Crawford was the best, and for the longest time I thought I'd imagined this tv special since I couldn't find any footage of it ever existing! Thanks for posting it even if you have to take it down -- at least now I know I'm not crazy. :P

OceanKingNY: This video was made while standing in front of a bluescreen - it is not Michael who is moving, but the the camera as it zooms in on an ever-changing blue screen sceen. As for the performance, it gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it - I cannot even imagine how this performance could ever be improved upon!!!

I don't think it's a bluescreen. This set was used as the backdrop for all of the songs performed on this special. It was decorated and lit differently to match the mood of each song. The area behind Michael as he stands on the balcony is where the orchestra sat while David Foster conducted "Carol of the Bells." And the area with the candles at the beginning was also used by Johnny Mathis, Vanessa Williams, the Winans, & Wynonna while they sang their songs.

It looks to me like Michael is actually singing along with the recording here - even though there was no microphone on the set to pick up his voice. Many singers prefer to do this than to try to silently mouth the words, which often looks phony. My guess is that this song has so many dramatic highlights, that there was no way Michael could fake it, so he had to sing along to recapture the mood he had in the recording studio.
As for the move to the balcony: it must be Christmas magic!

Dear "Bric"...have faith. Michael has been back in the USA for most of the Summer and was meeting with production people in London before that and production people in L.A. most of the Summer and Fall. In fact he treated fans to a special Lunch and day with him in Long Beach, Ca. this August and just sent a wonderful Christmas message to all his fans thru the MCIFA. He also talked about the PBS special in a letter on the back of the newest issue of "Notes". I think we will see that special soon.

Lets all pray Phantomsith that Michael will get his new PBS special done right after the holidays so we can all see MC on T.V. again and hopefully on tour as well. I know he wanted a couple of years off to focus on his family, friends and God and thats awesome but I think you and I and a few other people are missing Mike about now. Hopefully if he does tour or return to Broadway you can see him! He is a fantastic performer and a great guy offstage. Plus he really is grateful for the fans he has.

I agree...Michael has a fantastic voice and hes great to look at too! Actually "Phantomsith" EVERYBODY was lip-synching on this special as well as on the TSO special including TSO and jewel. They have to because of the fact that it's a taped special and not a concert special. It's because of technical demands. IT is Michaels voice though and he did record it himself so nobody else sang for him on the CD or here. MC has a great voice in general! Bravo MC. God has blessed you with a special gift.

Oh, I know Michael's voice when I here it, I grew up with his Phantom of the Opera in my ears after my grandmother bought the cassette in 94...last time the tour was in town*sigh*. Alas, I was just saying that he learned something between this special and the one in 07. There are certain times a performer sings a song and they fit, hand in glove, in such a way that it makes you wonder if the writer had this voice in mind when they wrote the song. The first time I heard this version of one of my favorite Christmas carols, I was in a car with my foster brothers, returning from Christmas shopping. I think it was the year the David Foster album was first released. I made my brothers stop talking until it was over. It took my very breath away, and I wept openly. After all these years and hearing many different versions, Michael's remains the best and most beautiful I have ever heard. His is the voice not only of The Phantom, but of an angel.

There has never been another Phantom like the original, MC, even though the role has been sung by many talented men. And though I have heard many different versions of this lovely carol performed by many talented people, NONE OF THEM touches Michael's. I remember many years ago on a Christmas special this song was performed by Toni Tenile and it has been my # 1 pick all these years.Since I haven't found her rendition I am more than satisfied with versions by John Berry,Groban,Crawford,and Phelps.

I was listening to Christmas music on Y94 today.O Holy Night was played. But it was surely no Michael!Could have been Josh Groban!Compared to this,Josh is-let's just say Josh is no Michael!Michael IS KING AND HE IS GOD OF THIS SONG!Mike overpowers, outsings, and outshines anyone else singing this song. I mean anyone.You want the ultimate version of this piece, go with this guy!Groban is 2nd place.Mike wins blue ribbon, and gold medal for this song!Groban wins a silver medal and red ribbon.

I know that many people are Josh Groban fans. I will say that he has a certain purity and pleasantness to his voice. He has technical ability. But in nearly everything I've ever heard him sing, what he lacks for me is passion, heart. Michael Crawford has NO problems with this. As with the Phantom, he sweeps you up into the emotion of the song with a power few possess. His is a rare and exquisite gift, and we are all blessed to be able to share in it as fans.

Interesting... I wonder how the Trans-Siberian Orchestra went about getting the rights to use this EXACT same version of the song for their Ghosts of Christmas Eve video...
I love Michael Crawford, and I love O Holy Night. The combination of the two is even more profoundly beautiful than I could have imagined. I love the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, too... I had just been under the impression they did the song with Michael, so I'm a little disillusioned =(
