Thanks for putting this up, i love Billy Curry pouting over the synth, brilliant performence which on Jools Holland Gary said almost didn't happen due to the PA blowing up.
Mid to late seventies were great for innovation, experimentation and evaluation: with results. Bands (sorry, kids) that used what little resources they had and produced some of the most memorable tunes. Ever.
It's cold outside And the paint's peeling off of my walls There's a man outside In a long coat, grey hat, smoking a cigarette Now the light fades out And I'm wondering what I'm doing in a room like this There's a knock on the door And just for a second I thought I remembered you So now I'm alone Now I can think for myself About little deals and S.U's And things that I just don't understand
Like a white lie that night or a slight touch at times touch at times I don't think I meant anything to you So I open the door It's the `friend' that I'd left in the hallway "Please sit down" A candle lit shadow on a wall near the bed You know I hate to ask But, are `friends' electric? You see, mine's broke down And now I've no one to love
This is even today ahead it's time, damn stupid fuc*s those producers who display us this new boring music, why can't this be commercial instead of Madonna or Britney???
This pretty great. I thought this was utter tosh at the time (I was only young). Now, with yrs of listening to music and broadening my taste (and especially getting into Kraftwerk which changed EVERYTHING), I know realise how good this is.
Pity about the guiar part tho' - sounds like some afterthought.
Should have been stripped down electro from the get go.
got a mini moog emulator on me pc..and have copied this tune to absolute perfection ...probably sounds better than this and more like the studio version...all I need now is a gary numan wannabe to sing it..coz my voice is shite lol
This is the kind of shit that reminds me: we Americans gave the world rock and roll, but Brits perfected it. They outpaced us at our own game decades ago.
First time I saw this on TOTP I thought he was trying to do a David Bowie, with the body moves and looking into camera. Bought the album on the strength of this track - brilliant!
i have both tubeway army albums, fresh and exciting at the time, numan started well with cars, complex, then i lost interest,as his later stuff didnt impress
I'm not sure what you mean either. Actually, the band evolved into who you see in this video. The song was originally recorded with Gary's uncle Jess Lidyard on drums and was lacking the other musicians with the exception of Paul Gardiner (who had no close ups and who incidently died of a drug overdose -in I forget what year)
Not sure what you mean by this. Tubeway Army had two albums out before Gary "went solo". The first was titled Tubeway Army, the second was Replicas, which is where this track came from. Good vid, tho, thanks for posting! :-)
Not a fan of this outfit though I much prefer the black shirt, black pants(trousers), with the blue and red tie.

So I find out your reason
For the phone calls and smiles
And it hurts
And I'm lonely
And I should never have tried
And I missed you tonight
So it's time to leave
You see it meant everything to me

Nice! The old synths, fat bass and slick looking Gary. The song is still great, can listen to it time after time.

Gary numan = Genius
There are many, Rush, Yes, Jim Morrison, BOC
etc... We're just lucky to see them and thank God for You Tube, because i have seen so much I would have missed.
Different genres, but I love real music made by real people, not by freakin computers.
