Oh God!, such a lovely voice, musicality and looks. She was for mr the "complete hole package"!!!.Bravaaa!!! Her ellegant phrasing mixed with a lovely vocal set of shades, allows to get into the heart of the role. She is a living "Master class".
Wonderful! The wobble came and went it seems, at least on record - its not evident at all in the '68 Hollander; the attack here in '70 tends towards the scoop (doesn't affect 3'36 however!!!) but then the '73 Aida is flawless!
all academic: she never once phoned it in and always gave as much as she could and i'll love any singer for that
Absolutely fabulous and completely authoritative, as always with this great singing actress; Karl Bohm conducting is a big plus, as I think he is the greatest conductor of FIDELIO in my experience.
Thank you very much. I've got the DVD at home but no trailer in it :'( and I wanted to put it in my own space with some words ref. this lonely opera of my favourit componist Ludwig van Beethoven.
And at last we have this wonderful production on DVD (I am sure it is the best Fidelio on video)! All other artists are there also very good in singing and acting. Highly recommended!
I have always marvelled at this fabulous artist. Critics unanimously, unfailingly and eternally crucified her for every performance she gave. I learned early on to trust my own ear and to ignore them. Get Mike Richter's CD-ROM that has the '76 Boulez Ring on it -- her Gotterdammerung Brunnhilde that year was wonderful. I always thought that if the Sun could sing, it would sound just like Gwyneth Jones. And she was passionate about music, she was electrified by it. I've always loved her.
@Steinweg9 Superb artiste, indeed. Recently watched her Elisabetta in Don Carlo with Sandor Konya -- magnificent. Yes, she had a wobble early on in her career (Covent Garden mavens dubbed her the "friendly soprano" because the voice "waved" at the audience), but it was a fine instrument used with intelligence and creativity, and she often plumbed emotional depths that others couldn't. I was lucky to catch her Isolde at Covent Garden in London, with the amazing Jon Vickers by her side.
@Steinweg9 "if the Sun could sing, it would sound just like Gwyneth Jones". I like that very much: was a greater compliment ever paid to a singer? Still performing aged 75, due at Vienna State Opera in 2012 according to wikipedia. Must take some stamina and passion, after so long; that sun is still burning.
Gwyneth is thrilling here, as is the propulsive conducting of Karl Bohm! Can anyone post a video from her performance as the Marchellin in Rosenkavelier at the Met (a performance I was lucky to have seen)? She was one of the best Marchellins ever.
What is amazing here is how little she has to go into chest register to sing this aria. There are the usual slight pitch issues at the center of her tone, but all in all, a great effort, and where did those pianissimos come from? Wow! It proves that a big voice is required for this role, but subtlety as well.
Jones had a pianissimo when she needed it. Her voice was (is?) truly remarkable in how well she could control it, given the immense size of her instrument. And when she opened up the throttle it was truly THRILLING. Hardly anyone comes close in pure visceral excitement.
"Caskader" seems conveniently to have forgotten the 7 Beethoven operas which have been categorized as "Apocryphae," "Gnostic," and "Putative." Targetted by a jealous Rossini, few of these, excepting only "Dein Schicksal," have ever 'heard' the light of day.
Oh my!! What an artist. And what a voice.

Una artista, de las grandes; Cantante multifacetica de una llamativa ductilidad.
Sabia perfectamente captar todo el sentido, tano vocal, como, artistico, de los
roles que abordaba. Una artista imprescindible para olvidar.

Not bad, but I prefer Eva Marton's version from 1981. Listen to it on youtube! I also like Dame Gwyneth Jones!

@Steinweg9 - Too bad that her great voice burned-out, somewhat quickly in her career. In THIS aria, she even rivals Kirsten Flagstad.
