i love the part at 1:58 when jer's about to sing then i guess he was about to sing the wrong thing, that look on his face!, and then he's just like "i'm gonna rip a mellow solo instead"
someone posted that the beatles were the number 1 band ever. While they may have been more "popular"... their depth and abilities as pure musicians are in 2 different universes... not even close!
@dnknanbne I don't think these two bands can be compared. You can't take anything away from the Beatles as musicians. George Harrison was one of the best guitarists there was. Perhaps the Dead were more innovating in terms of what they did for music, essentially creating a genre but the song writing of lennon, mccartney, &harrison is hard to beat. I think they are both incredible bands, but i think it is hard to say which is better. thats why i dont like the which band is best question.
comparing the beatles to the grateful dead is like comparing apples to shoes, two important things yet very very different. sure the dead were inspired by them, but once the Dead found themselves they flew to the beat of phils bass and never looked back. really incomparable styles, listen to some 66 stuff if you want the best comarison of jerrys guitar work to harrisons, but even then its still seperate roads. the world wouldnt be the same with out either, as both affected people differnetly
So what does this song actually mean? Is it about the end of a relationship or more about, realizing that if you want to have that good relationship, you have to leave your bad habits and other crap behind?
Sometimes the band reminds me of 60's jazz men. No jumping around or much show - It's all concentrated into the music. So we find our own joy, bliss - whatever it is -beam it back to the band and they play it back out sometimes here --- sometimes there - wherever it is, it is.
Man, I wish I could've seen them back in the early 70's. I saw them plenty in the early 90's but the old deadheads told me how good it was back then. Still had a blast though.
@indieindy I Totally agree, I first saw them in the early 90s in Vegas, I only knew a few songs from the radio, and was going because Steve Miller was opening . After seeing the Dead live at that show I was a fan for life!
my three year old son seems to be developing the traits of a semi-dead-head - i put on "europe ´72" this afternoon - in the trippy "prelude" on side six he just sat in the sofa - eyes closed - moving his head along with the music

Some of my friends in High School in the 60's became true Dead Heads and where the Dead went, they went. I wish I had followed them more! I did see them about 4 time, including at Watkins Glen in July '73 (along with 600,000 others - also booked were The Band & The Allman Bros Band) and in 1980 in NY City (one of their last live concerts tours for a while, I think). Now, I'm TOTALLY obsessed with them, and am in a group that plays a lot of Dead - this song being one of our VERY favorites!
Anybody have a live version of Box Of Rain? I absolutely love that song and can't find it anywhere. Other than that song, this is probably my favorite Dead tune.

@quartoGBbrooklyn Wow, to hear a guy like you, who I wouldn't have even thought would listen to the Dead (only because you mainly listen to death metal), that almost touches my heart, and certainly touches my interest, to hear you say that. I couldn't agree more!!! They covered such a variety of generes, and yet had their "own sound and style", i have to take my hat off to them too. Man what a group and what energy came out of that group. Marc Trainor.
