  • I watched other video's, but u describe the process well. Thank uou so much, i've had this problem for about a year now. I will work on my car this Wednesday(my day off) THANK YOU so much. I will also try n make a video :) i have a 1998 Buick Regal LS btw

  • Great video thanks much. My odometer had been out for over a year and I had taken the car to at least 5 mechanics including a Buick dealer. The estimates were from $0( they didn't want to or didn't know how to fix) to a high of $400.00 to replace the entire instrument cluster.

The disassembly and reassembly was quite easy. The toughest part was the soldering(you need three hands). My son helped and we had it done in no time. I used the 150 olm, 1/8watt resistors as opposed to the 1/2 watt.

  • You are amazing!! seriously, if I was a stripper I would give you a free lap dance ( no homo). This was the first time I ever worked on my car by myself and I never soldered anything before!!! I did all this under 2 hours and it worked!! the soldering part was a bit confusing to figure out but it all worked!!!! thank you so much!!! This honestly costed me under $25.00!~!!!

  • thank you so much for the video, took me less than an hour to do everything and that included a trip to radio shack. If you have the tools and resistors ready before you begin, you can have everything done from start to finish in less than 30 minutes. saved me over $100. thanks again.

  • I'm assuming that the passive deterrent system doesn't route through the cluster, and I'm also assuming that the odometer mileage is retained. Am I correct? I have a 2000 Regal with the same issue. Odometer/gear indicator and driver info center are both out.

  • WOW you are the MAN! I will do this as soon as I get off work this weekend!

Thank you so much for taking the time to show us all how to do this job!

Your a great guy, good things will come your way!

Got a Lexus that has the same problem, going to try that after I do the Buick!

  • A huge thanks is in order! You saved me about $273.99! Resistors cost me $1.17 and it only took about an hour and a half of my time. Thanks again!!

  • Thank you very much for the lesson. Followed your directions and finished the work in an hour. My wife was actually shocked that it worked and what it cost. Why dont they have faith in us when it comes to work like this?

  • A BIG THANKS, YOU SAVED ME A LOT OF CASH......

I used these, a little bigger than the 1/8 watt, there is enough room for these 1/2 watt,,,,, took less than a hour for the whole job.......

    radio shack

    150 ohm 1/2W 5% Carbon Film Resistor pk/5Model: 271-1109 | Catalog #: 271-1109

  • @jcookin I bought these150 ohm, 1/2 watt ones, and it did not work right. Not sure what is going on, but it flickers in and out. I had a guy at a computer shop do the soldering, so I know ot hope it was done right.

  • @gasitman Hello, its been 2 weeks since I repaired my odometer and I've had no problems, I replaced all 4 resistors, the old ones just broke off just like the video,, not sure why the flickering maybe check the solder conections, these need to be solid..

  • Am going to do this in a couple days. The book talks about disabling the airbags and other stuff . Does that have to be done or is disconnecting battery sufficient?

  • Have the same car. When I pushed a certain area of dashboard, odometer would flicker Read before about repair on Buick Forum. Took it to a shop today and told them problem. Guy said cluster needed replaced. $400 was price. I told him he was full of it and the resistors need replaced. He then says whoever told me that was wrong. Learn things people before you get ripped off. You are the man!!!! Thank you!!!

  • Thanks! I did this in about an hour and about $1 out of pocket. GM should recall this, though. I used 1/8 watt 150 ohm resistors.

  • Sir,

    Thank you for this!

I did this last night and I now have my car back!

Took 1 hour 10 minutes all told.

You gave just enough info to get the project done.

    I used 150 ohm 1/4 watt resistors.

What I had on hand and they seem to work fine.

Now am I brave enough to tackle dropping the gas tank for the fuel guage....

  • Excellent video brother. I'd send you some of the money I would have had to shell out to some repair goon if I had it to spare.

  • I used to work in a PCB factory. It appears that the solder paste for those 4 resistors never got enough heat in the SMT machine, resulting in poor joints from the factory. The resistors themselves most likely can be reused if they're still there; which is what I did tonight.

    1. Remove the resistors and remove the solder on the pads with solder wick.

    2. Carefully clean the terminals on the resistors with a wire brush.

    3. Solder the resistors back in place (preferably with 63/37 solder).

  • Great video! Help me get my 99 Century fixed. Took me 2 hours and that included walking to Radio Shack to pickup the resistors.

  • I don't have soldering tools, the new resistors must be placed with welding ??

or is there something to replace the solder.

  • When you go to RadioShack to buy your new resistors, be sure to buy the 150-Ohm, 1/8 Watt 5-pack. The part # is 271-010. When I went to buy mine, the salesman asked me if I wanted the 1/2 watt package, or the 1/8 watt package. Now I know after installing the 1/8 watt resistors. They cost $1.19 per 5-pack.

  • Easy fix just as it is described . Up there in Canada the GM dealer wanted 500 + to fix it and 250. was labor .It took me 1 hour that includes a 15 min trip to Canadian Tire for solder . total cost for fix 13.58 thanks again

  • question about those LED's that are showing when you open up the circuitboard:

Are they colored? or just white? I'm looking to change the color of my dash panel, and I was thinking that it might be as simple as replacing the LEDs if they're what gives it its green color

  • very helpful

though soldering the resisters is bit tricky is way cheaper than getting cheapest instrument pannel.

  • Thanks so much for your informative video! Watching this made removing all the panels alot easier! Sure enough, all the resistors were bad. I use my odometer to gauge how much gas I have in my tank since my fuel meter doesnt work either. Now I just have to fix my gas gauge, driver and back passenger windows, brakes, tires, A/C...and whatever goes next week. And if you think thats bad, wait until you see the list on my wifes 97 Lesabre. No more Buicks for me thanks!

  • Thanks soo much for your informative video! I use my odometer to gauge how much gas I use so I know when to fill up (my gas gauge doesnt work correctly either!). Sure enough, all the resistors were damaged. (quality american products). Now all I have left to fix is the gas gauge, new brakes, new tires, driver and driver passenger side windows, A/C.....and whatever brakes next week

  • Thank you very much for this easy to follow video!!!! My Buick Century is steadily ceasing to function properly, and this is the most recent problem. I will attempt to do this fix myself. MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for this video!

A quick tip for soldering onto the board. Apply flux paste to the pads, and place the resistor. Clean the tip of your hot soldering iron. Tin the tip, making sure to get some extra melted solder onto the tip. Touch the melted solder onto the lead and the melted solder should quickly flow onto the lead and pad without risking overheating the board.

  • I want to know if I should disconnect the air bag system is necessary or not.

  • @MySiordia My dad just bought a 2000 buick with this problem. This video helped us greatly! We did not have to disconnect the airbags, although you may want to disconnect the battery. We didn't and in several parts you need to set the handbrake and put the gear selector into first hear to get the arm out of the way. If you do not disconnect the battery you will have to deal with the door chime going of constantly, which can be VERY aggravating.

  • Great info my daughters Buick same problem will attempt it was quoted 350 bucks in a shop. Thank you!

  • Thank you , video is very much appreciated!

  • Thank you so much for posting this video!!! It helped me fix my Buick
