Orange forum homie! Am I right that the formula 5 is a little more germanium sounding? Is that the sweet honey CB or HW? What position is the Signa in? The underlying harmonics from the signa is top notch!! I would think keeping the Signa and formula would be my choice.
OCD V3 for me, Rythem, GT 500 for a well EQ'ed overdriven distortion lead signal, my
Tortuga Yeti supports fuzz tones. It's so puzzling to me why I just built a $2G + pedalboard instead of getting a Boogie Mk5. It's you and GearMannDude's fault!
they all sound similar ... not same....the reason for that is different settings on each pedal ( i think you like certain sound and trying to see which pedal will give you that sound better ) ...via youtube i liked best honey overdrive. cool shootout.
The Formula 5 was consistently my least favorite. Too brittle and fizzy in this video, IMO. My favorites were the Sweet Honey and Pure Drive. Most natural and smoothest break up.
@bille77 Wow, caught your breath, bro? Anyway, yeah, that's why I only kept one :o) Although they definitely sound more different in person....just not enough.
@bille77 Not true. Buy yourself better PC speakers and you'll hear that they do have different mids, a bit more open or a bit more scooped. Which does not say anything about the overdrive characteristics, I mean do they sound pleasant or edgy, smooth and balanced or tough and aggressive? You know what I mean, I hope so at least.
@bille77 Don't sound the same to me....the Formula was definitely the most complex and full. the Pure Drive was the most transparent. Lots of differences in between.
I have been collecting overdrive for 10+ years, and one thing that seems to keep happening, is that they all have a SIMILAR sound. In fact I have the feeling that when surrounded by a band and a screaming crowd...nobody knows the better. This disease seemed incurable until I just said F it. I am now free of this neurotic search for a "different" overdrive. Just get a good amp! that is the cure!
@fendertwin777 oh man..how i understand you!lol i dont have many pedals but i'm always lookin into youtube for demos and yes..they're all very similar...off course theres some better than others..and to record the better the pedals the better the tone..if you use pedals of course..but who doesn't?at least a boosting tubescreamer..anyway,my favourite pedals are the Fulltone OCD(i think the first two versions are the best),the BK Butler Tube Overdrive(that all mighty David Gilmour uses on leads).
@fendertwin777 and of course, talking more cheap i think the Boss SD-2r,the Boss Blues Driver(this one is awesome for blues stuff!no doubt.but only if oyou play only blues like Clapton or BB King,etc..) and the Digitech Bad Monkey does the job well too ;) wich ones are your favourites?
@fendertwin777 The disease is called G.A.S. :-) Two overdrives are enough for me. One for full gain overdrive and one for boosting to get the fullgain od over into distortion area. MI Audio Blue Boy Deluxe and a Digitech Bad Monkey (for boosting) are a great combo. :-)
@bjornkom I ended up keeping the Timmy and the Signa Drive. The Sweet Honey went to a friend on long-term loan so its still kind of within reach :o) It was tough because I liked them all...
I think the SHOD and the Timmy both have some "teeth" in the sound, a brightness that I think would cut through well with a band. SHOD seems more dynamic than the Timmy, but Timmy has more bottom and more rock attitude. The Catalinbread seems like a different beast, more fuzzy/woolly. The SignaDrive seems a bit more mid focused and tube screamerish, which worked well on the leads. Pure Drive wasn't bad, but just didn't grav my attention. I'd love to hear what the Timmy and SHOD can do together.
R2D2! lol

Try a Kitty Hawk amplifier. Fantastic Howard Dumble sound for 1/20 the price.

Least fave: Formula #5 (but sounded the best in high gain to me)
Fave: Sweet Honey (just didn't like how it sounded in that last clip, with the higher gain setting), And a draw between the others.

God , there so similar ... Did you roll back the volume on the guitar to see how that effects each pedal? Dynamic response? What was your out come?

@juliedog464 Again, all very similar results. Pretty much go with whatever is the least expensive used :o)

what would you recomend for a "rolling stones" or "beatles" sound with overdrive pedals?

@ChristianMusicianPGB The Formula No. 5 and the Signa Drive are both really good for that stuff...but then all of them can do it :oP
