always loved this lot memories of post baggy shoe gaze.i viewed the world through my fringe lol very serious! also check the early stuff by RIDE and SLOWDIVE if u like this.catherine wheel mark the only cool thing to come from norwich ever.
I'm right there with you EFB85AD. I've been crazy about them since I first heard them at an all day outdoor concert in Atlanta back in '92 right when "Ferment" was getting exposure on the college radio stations here in the states. They did "Black Metallic" and it totally blew me away. I absolutely loved their sound . It was like modern psychedelia at it's finest. Thanks for the post.
I forgot about that one... I was there for it, in the 90+ degree sun playing football. As I recall, the top two acts were Smashing Pumpkins, then Connells. I remember that show well... Afterwards I passed out from heat exhaustion in a Steak And Shake.. lol
Indeed it was HOT. 97 at the worst part.I kept going and cooling off under the showers; fully dressed mind you. I had the worst sunburn in my life from lack of shade.
When I first heard CW in the early 90's I thought it to be the next and best incarnation of the most original post ounk/new wave of the 80's (Bauhaus, The The)
So a while ago, I won something on E-bay from a guy who appeared to be a CW fan. When I told him I was a fan also, he admitted that he wasn't really "just a fan" -- he was actually Dave. The bassist! Unfortunately, this was just after the band had sacked him, so it was awkward and painful for him to discuss CW -- but in spite of that, he humored me with some stories and even autographed what I'd won. It's unfortunate they had to sack him. Doing that seemed to kill the band's sense of direction
OMG, turn it up and just lose yourself in that atmospheric wall of sound. It just kills me that after all these years how many people don't know who they are.
couldn't agree more. I remember the first time I heard Black Metallic. Probably in 1992 or so. So intense. They never got credit for being an incredible band. Unique.
my inital thoguht upon hearing them was, slightly similar to oasis, but more varied, and more experimental ( what an over-used word experimental is in music these days though!)
Yes, I do too. I got into them late, so I only caught the last tour in 2000. But I saw two shows and became a megafan and collector. I wish Rob would quit farting around with his solo thing and get the band back together.
Go see Rob solo (on tour now), he's touring with a full band. Saw him last night in Boston, still mind blowingly good, and you'll get to see him at an intimate venue.
I'd like to get excited by Rob solo, but I just prefer bands to solo artists. If a band like Swervedriver, who had an even lower profile than Catherine Wheel, can reform, then CW could do it too. Catherine Wheel still has a loyal following. I had a feeling the end was near when, at the El Rey show in 2000, Rob referred to them as his "backup band". If only "Mad Dog" had been the lead single from "Wishville" maybe the album wouldn't have died a death.
that's odd, I was at the El Rey show in 2000, and I also knew that probably that was my first and only time seeing CW, hence I skipped work, took like 3 buses, and 3 hours later I was outside the venue at like 4 PM, just waiting and waiting... but man was it worh it... I still have Rob's handwritten lyrics for one the songs he didn't know that well...

Was that the CW/Slowdive show? I saw them in Atlanta in 1995... Was wonderful except the power going out many times...

No. It was at "Sonic Sunday" in July of '92 at the old Lakewood Amphitheatre.

Please don't use this band and Oasis in the same.
Sentence thanks.
I get irritated by two things.
It being all about ROb now.
And people who act agressive towards this band becuase they didn't waste a cool mil in the studio like some other tape warble guitar band did.
Best band in shoegaze.
Even if only for "ferment"
Once they started rocking, people would pee down the leg

1:28 Catherine Wheel with special guest Slowdive. Tickets $10-67? Am I reading that right? I would empty my account out to have seen that.

I've listened to this whole CD with the volume all the way up a thousand times! It is simply the best of that era, and that says a lot!

God, I wish I could turn the clock back to these times again - when English music was actually original and innovative.

Actually I saw three shows in 2000; one at the Troubadour and two at the El Rey Theatre.
