i could watch doubles with these women or singles with these women every single day over the boring beyond stupid grunting no talent, no skill, just bludgeon the ball and hope it goes in and hope i hit a winner and not error of today's women players anyday!
women back then had more skill, they had to! they were not HELPED by the fly swatter, over powerful, trampoline effect rackets women use now! back then the women had to have skill and use tactics and athleticism! all sorely sorely lacking in today's game! put these 4 in today's game with the rackets used now or put today's women back in the 70s with wood rackets and these women (king, court, wade, casals) would tear the top women today apart!
Some people today are convinced women's pro tennis wasn't any good in those days because it did not have the amount of power that we see today. Well, this video will help dispel the myth that there was no power or that the game was a bore compared to today's action. Perhaps the girls weren't as pretty as they are today. But they were gifted athletes and immensely skilled tennis players.
Thanks for posting this. That synthetic green clay (after decades on grass) spelled the beginning of the end for Forest Hills as the site of the US Open. It moved to Flushing two years later.
I attended the Open at Forest Hills in the early 70s (still on grass then). It was charming and intimate but hopelessly outdated and uncomfortable. You can't tell from these images, but most of the seats (all but the best ones near the court) were just benches with no backs!

wade was quite the server and athelete. court and wade should have easily taken this match in my estimation.

You can feel the intensity even after some 33 years later between these players.
