  • This goes to show that the perfect song would in all probability have never been made, had it not been for God's influence in this incidence.

  • I love satriani, But just because the other song uses the same chords, it's a bit over the top to sue, they're clearly different songs, just with the same chords, many, Many songs do the same thing

  • Coldplay is just awful, and Satriani's tune sounds fit for a "Sonic the Hedgehog" videogame. I'm not denying that Satriani is a good musician, just not my cup of tea.

  • I mean, in this video, its obvious that the pitch was bended of Coldplay's song, or else it wouldn't have sounded the same.

  • i like coldplay's version better

even if they did "copy", it was a better song and they are just better.

    so there.

  • @NeonVanilla Ok, you can prefer the Coldplay version, but copying is a symptom of not much imagination.

  • @MerloHardRock They copied one single motif, not the whole song? I still think coldplay made a better song out of satriani's motif. he should be thankful

  • Coldplay version isnt better, nothing to be thankfull.

  • isnt better, u like it more, but satriani version is 100% mor eimaginative

  • @tomaspepino Learn how to spell before trying to form an opinion.

  • Sorry, but english isnt my native lenguage.

I only say, satriani is better for me.

    I dont like lying musicians.

  • Joe wins, no doubt. He is an excellent talent, one of the best guitar player of the world, I think.

  • cold play sux, joe satriblahblah sux and you all suck for sucking so bad. I'm gonna go listen to some justin bieber

  • Joe wins, no excuses

  • coldplay overated shite not too keen on satriani either just wanted to hear what all the fuss was about and yeah coldplay owe satriani cash

  • someone from the band easily walked passed someone listening to this tune and not even notice it, the human brain pays attention and stores memories you dont even want, and if the tune was playing over and over in their heads it could have been easily mistaken for something theyre mind made on their own, i love coldplay, and i dont think they would have stolen the tune, just getting permission would give if i could fly a lot of free advertisement and he would have said yes

  • @victoriaroseh Coldplay has openly admitted that they often steal music from other artists if they like it. That's the problem.

  • a diferent musical taste for me cold play is a group that does not know how to play anything else than the piano I HATE COLD PLAY THEY ARE SO BORING!

  • I can only hear three notes which are identical and two chords. Amazing you can sue for so little...

  • And the irony of it all is that Colplay had a strong upinion about bands not being innovative.

  • I think coldplay's version is better. Satriani plays a mean guitar, but really, STFU.

  • Anyone that says that Coldplay didn't copy Joe Satriani, or that it just "sounds similar, but it's not the same" is completely tone deaf, and I'm not quite sure what you are listening to.

  • Okay I still think Coldplay's version is better and there song is much better and deeper

  • Both stolen from Alizee, lol

  • excellent

  • Nada q verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... Peace out!

  • AGUANTE COLDPLAY LO MEJOR DEL MUNDO!!!!!!!!!

  • I know many songs that sound similar. But it's not plagiarism.

  • @Zenadixo It's more than a similarity: same key, same chords progression, same bpm and basically same melody. Too casual.

  • It's not copy , similar sounds , not music

  • COLDPLAY SON COPIONES DE PORQUERIA,

    DEDIQUENSEN A OTRA COSA!!!!

  • QUE, A COLDPLAY NO LE DA LA CABESA PARA ESCRIBIR SUS PROPIAS SANCIONES? QUE, LE TIENE QUE ANDAR QUITANDO CRÉDITO A JOE SATRIANI QUE SI ES UN GRAN ARTISTA!?

  • its a music from joe. no question about that. Its a matter of principles ando coldplay should say it on the album. JOE SATRIANI RULES! COLDPLAY also good.

  • joe satriani is actually cool, so he is better

  • It´s NOT FIRST TIME THEY ARE INSPIRED BY LEGENDARY SONGS! Kraftwerk vs Coldplay IT`S JUST A LACK OF CREATIVITY !!!

  • it's literally 3 chords that are the same...

  • The funny part about it is they took the best part of "If I could Fly" and its actually the worst part of Viva La Vida. It's not until they say "I hear Jerusalem bells ringing" that the song really sounds great. The part they bummed from Satriani was the slow boring build up to the good parts. Just saying.

  • I liked this band when they were depressed, and robbed the music of radiohead .. !

  • Joe hace hablar a la Guitarra ;D

  • If you write a song with 4 chords in it someone will eventually write on that sounds very similiar.

  • I'm a big Coldplay fan and it really annoys me when people accuse them of plagiarism. In this there are what, 5 notes that are the same!?? the rest is COMPLETELY different!! There's only a certain amount of combinations of notes in the world, so some are gonna be the same!! So stop complaning!! Coldplay are brilliant!! :D

  • @DreamFool95

Except for the singing progressions that match the lead guitar. Ripped-off. Undeniable.

  • @ColdplayIsMyWorld - Viva la vida was recorded in 2007. If I Could Fly was recorded in 2004, 3 years before. Took 7 years to write and was dedicated to his wife. That is one of the big reasons to the lawsuit. It is a very special song for Joe. The money paid by Coldplay to Joe was given to charity. Joe never wanted Coldplay money, was only a matter of principles.

  • It does not matter if it is a "coincidence" (although with Cloneplay's history that is doubtful). Joe had the copyright first. That's why Cloneplay paid Joe to settle it out of court.

  • Comment removed

  • @ColdplayIsMyWorld you silly coldplay fanboy. Satriani's song was written years before this Coldplay shit. It's unfortunate that Coldplay haven't had an original idea since their first album, and every song sounds the fucking same, and if they like themselves so much they should just make 10 greatest hits album with interchangeable songs all of which sound the same. I mean, you're from Argentina, we don't expect you to understand. Sort the civil war out in your country first.

  • @skezza I'm just going to say... Wether you're from the USA or England... You know NOTHING about our country, you're complitly ignorant about it, so that's not the best comment you could do.

  • @ColdplayIsMyWorld

That doesn't change the fact that Coldplay is bland, boring, overrated and full of Rip-Off artists.

  • either way, satriani owns

  • a bit suspect? Sorry I don't know what that means, but I can tell you that not only in music, but in all forms of art and business etc, there have been more than the same idea from two different groups or people. Music is the most common one. Try to come up with a melody RIGHT NOW by yourself and I guarantee you it will sound similar to anything you have heard before. It's a matter of influence and experience.

    unless you're mozart

  • I don't know how you say in English, but in French this kind of chords suite is an "ANATOLE" thousands pieces of music use it, and it normal in POP music to compose some notes that already exist when you use this chords, there is only twelve different notes in music, just think of it ;)

  • Comment removed

  • I know coldplay that wouldn't do this

when they used motive from "computer love" by Kraftwerk they asked for permission

I'm pretty sure that Chris would ask Joe for permission if he knew the simillarities

So IMO it's just pure coincidence

  • @father042

So thats why Coldplay had to pay Joe a bunch of money? ;)

  • @father042 Then why did they pay him in the end?

  • F**k u Joe! Viva la vida is one of the 10 most downloaded songs from itunes history .. your song is there? go bother someone else!

  • @carola613 Who the fuck cares if viva la vida is the most downloaded you ignorant piece of shit. Stop comparing one of the best (if not the best) living guitarists with a bunch of retards who can't even create their own melodies.

  • @carola613 Lol I won't even bother replying to your comments anymore. You talk like a 10 year old fangirl who knows nothing about music. Just go listen to your shitty bands and stop talking shit about a man that knows more about music than all of the retards from Coldplay together.

  • @carola613 Jes, you've right! All the the Satriani fans should to compare the success of "Viva la Vida" and "If I Could Fly". Satriani is angry, because he does not have a world wide hit. COLDPLAY 4EVER

  • @HustlerMuri

Well, reals musicians hate it when wannabes earn success they don't deserve.

  • Voldemort wins, screw Coldplay.

  • Hah I think the mix sounded just awesome....

  • the top line melody is clearly different , same key maybe unless its been autotuned for the purposes of this video. the 1st 3 notes are the same and same bend in joes guitar solo. but its not the same song. both are fuckin awesome btw! have to say thats a fact :)

i think it has to be 7 notes that are the same or similar, maybe im wrong?

  • @minhdiszles Same melody, chord progression, key and tempo. That is abit suspect don't you think?

  • @crazymarvel oh and also vivalavida is in the key of C#. This one was changed to key of D so he could mash the two songs.

  • Comment removed

  • i couldn't give a toss. both are great pieces of music imo, thats it.

  • Coldplay is pretty gay, but with the guitar, it sounds really good. coldplay probobly did rip off Satriani

  • Satch wins everytime. it doesnt even matter.

  • Coldplay absolutely stole the song. if i was going to steal a Satriani song i would steal a better song. joe has a lot better songs in my honest opinion.

  • It's not striking. This seems to be a short part of Satriani's song , a solo, it's not the whole song which has been copied, ... BTW, the two melodies are differents, I keep on thinking that it's no a plagiat ...

  • @JustineDulhauste dude this section of satrianis song is the chorus - if you can call it that. satriani writes in verse/chorus/bridge sections but instead of a voice its a guitar. this section is the "chorus" of if i could fly.

having said that in m yhonest opinion i think its a coincidence between the 2 of them

  • Why don't Satriani and Coldplay join up and play this song?

  • The fact is that Joe Satriani made it first... so... Coldplay... Go away :)

  • so?

  • @paeroasdasd because there are royalty issues. its not legal if they are the same notes/keys/structure. there have been lawsuits over this type of thing before. and its just not cool. I love Coldplay and Satch so im speaking from a musicians point of view. but for the record, this is my LEAST favorite coldplay song!! even before i heard the comparison.

  • This is what happens when you have two songs in the same key with the same beat, they overlay. simple enough.

Its not coincidence, is simply how music works. DJ's do this all the time with songs, they just use the technique differently.

This is so far from stealing.

Try overlaying umbrella with numa numa with alejandro. They all use the same chords in the same key.

  • Comment removed

  • this is just a joke

  • even the time is equal

  • Highway Robbery!

  • i think chris martin heard this song sometime and some of it unknowingly became a part of the viva la vida....i used to like coldplay a lot but since the past few years they have started seeming too pop and too gay and the previously unheard (by me) satch has become a god....

  • I composed a lot of things that eventually existed in different big bands like Radiohead, but when it is just 5 or 6 notes, this is a coincidence, not plagiat. If Satriani defines his song by these 5 or 6 notes, then he's stupid. Even if Satriani is "one of the most famous guitarists" and coldplay is "shitty", I think he had some interest in suing the 'mainstream'. But most of all, I think that guys in Coldplay have a limited musical culture, and everytime, they never realise they stole music.

  • I don't think it was intentional. I'm a big fan of Joe but i don't think Coldplay blatantly ripped him off. Just in case, compare

Joe Satriani - Crowd Chants with

m.o.v.e - Rage Your Dream (yes it is Japanese pop band).

Listen to the chorus section in both songs, it sound very similar.

  • hmmm i think viv la vida is very similar to if i could fly and actually identical but as both songs progress it sounds like a mess of a song and that to me sounds that if coldplay copied anything it was the way that first verse is sung but after that idk sounds like a mess together. im talkin about the mix btw and thats my opinion fans of both coldplay and joe (more so joe) but hey thats my opinion

  • coldplay is fuckin thief

  • no parece coincidencia .Esto es un plagio.

  • Coincidence my ass. They copied this shit. Joe is the best

  • @father042 you must be one of thse new fuckin' teenagers who like it in the ass listening to bullshit bands like coldshit. Fuck you and get a sense of musicality!

  • @father042 Really man? You resort to talking about jealousy?...wow...just WOW

  • @father042 uhh except that joe is one of the worlds most famous guitarists and coldplay is just some shitty mainstream rock band... i dont think he is jealous at all.

  • @father042 , joe with his crap??? what age are you 12??, show a bit of respect for one of the most accomplished musicians in the world ever, grow up

  • @father042 Totally agree with you! Go Coldplay! :-)

  • it really is similiar. maybe it's just a coincidence

  • Ever heard of The 4 Chord Song by Axis of Awesome? Cause nobody got sued there!

  • Who cares they can't play it like satch so they should record it together and turn it into an better song. hahahaha

  • @tav168

I totally agree. Either that or do a live collab

  • @tav168 now thats just blasphemy

  • sorry my english is bad but im music compositor: the tones of music CAN NOT patent it, the tempo CAN NOT patentet. FOR ME, all music no clasic, is analog,

  • @yenproject

but giving credit to a song that is blatantly the same is something you can sue for, it is technically intellectual property

  • Perhaps, but in this case it has to be the lowest degree as this chord and lead progression is way overused by bands way before either of the songs.

  • Comment removed

  • @geitepung

i will agree on you with the chord progression part, because many other artist have used this same one. i think what makes this case more so however is how the lead guitar and vocals are very similar as well

  • ...incorporating various instruments to create texture in what is ultimately a SONG. And that's fine too.

The point is, both pieces of music take admittedly very similar components, yet do very different things with them. Did it need to go to court? Nope. End of.

On a long enough time scale, this is going to happen all the time. Any word on what Verdes thinks about all this?

  • ...but I'm assuming that ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS AND REVERED GUITARISTS ALIVE is still doing just fine, career-wise, so in that regard, there's a solid argument that taking this to court was somewhat heavy-handed.

Besides, take the tracks for what they are: Satch on If I Could Fly does what Satch always does: clever clever, precision guitar work, music in a very technical sense. And that's fine. And Coldplay on Viva La Vida do what they've been working towards for a while now...

  • Is this debate even worth having, seriously? Yes, it went to court, but then certain shameless folks will try to sue for all kinds of ridiculous reasons; apparently Piers Morgan thinks it's funny to threaten legal action if anyone publicly insults him. Soulless, cowardly twat that he is... ¬_¬

What it really comes down to is did Satch suffer any loss of earnings in the wake of Coldplay's plagiarism/homage/coincidence? I admit I haven't read into it (having much better things to do)...

  • wow, the guitar fits perfectly.

I'm not a musician, neither I know music theory, but I don't think coldplay falls to plagiarism by this. there are too many differences.

  • OMG!! Such a impudent plagiarism! Shoking! By the way, Joe is cool))

  • Funny i own 6 guitars myself and i say people have been borrowing other riffs leads you name it for a very long time. Its music nothing is really original anymore. I get it. I do but if i was Sat i would be honored that somene was inspired and used a bit of what i play or something that sounds like it. Music isnt about money its about spreading that power and getting it back. Yet most musicians have forgotten that. They sell there sole and this is what happens.

  • Fatality

  • oh my god

  • Joe wins

  • tenso!

  • Coldplay ripped him off cos they are a bunch of winey bullshit writers and couldnt make a good song unless they copied off someone else them pricks!

  • @Jordo1900 plus Joe Satriani is an awsum musician and they want 2 b like him

  • ES mas q obio q es una coinscidencia pues papàs, si fuera mas q la melodia te creeria aparte es solo un trecho de la cancion es mas ni la velocidad la lleban tambien las canciones <VIVA COLD PLAY^ AND DEATH JOE SATRIANI NOT IS TRUE, JOE SATRIANI HAVE GOOD MUSIC

    viva coldpaly forever!!!!

  • @loany182hn yea...easy money which were donated for charity..wake up

  • el fin no justifica los medios...

el que quiera dinero facil, que se lo gane por sus propios medios, ya quedo demostrado q el unico que puede reclamar algo por esta cancion es cat stevens, el fue el primero en darle fama a la melodia

  • @loany182hn er.. Joe actually donated all the settlement money to charity.

  • Comment removed

  • @loany182hn Jaja leí eso en Wikipedia, tal cual lo escribiste vos!!! Jajaja, de todas formas concuerdo

  • Satriani and Stevens are such a bunch of thugs. They want to use the club of 'intellectual property' to smash the heads of as many musicians as they can for money.

If there is ever a case of musical plagarism, just voluntarily point it out.

  • Satriani should join Coldplay, problem solved.

  • @Exhalethepain are you crazy? :O

  • @Exhalethepain on the contrary, Coldplay should join Satriani lol

  • I'm gonna throw this out there and say that most of the points you guys have posted are all pretty shit, and no-one gives a fuck anyway.

  • cold play dont know how to play their insturments

  • coldplay deserves it they made that horrible song actually sound good haha

  • @yankees102 Lol i agree ;P

  • @yankees102 The only horrible thing is your face.

  • @yankees102 the opposite. they made a good song sound like shit.

  • they should do it on stage together, that would be immense!!!

  • If i could fly DOES sound a tad better, but they are way different songs

  • @Pilfaker Go Coldplay, Viva La Vida!

  • Simply hilarious. I'm a fan of both artists, but Satch has got delusions of grandeur if thinks Coldplay play stole this line from him. He must play around 50 of these different solo melodies on each album - it's pure chance. One of them was going to sound like something by somebody. Plus, do you really think they'd be listening to this for ideas? I very much doubt it. More importantly, why has Glenn Frey remained so quiet about Lady Gaga stealing "You belong to the City" melody fro Poker Face?

  • Joe rules, nothing more to say!!!!

  • @rico9990 I ARGEE!!! Coldplay kinda Suck

  • I can name 6 song i have in my library that have the same exact progression

  • @simonalamona345 its not the chord progression. Chord progression isn't protected under copyright. Melody is, and that is what is clearly plagiarized.

  • 2005 hit?? :L, good one.

  • So the guy from the video edits the tuning of the coldplay song to prove a point??? that is pathetic, it's 12 notes that follow a similar line and that brings a very big possibility of coincidence, Led Zeppelin has officialy declared to have copied songs and I bet you little boys don't say "fuck Led Zeppelin for copying Memphis Minnie song". Please respect both bands/musicians, they're different.

  • Fuck Coldplay

  • @Freebyrd1991

    Fuck you :)

  • @ken790124 Fuck you?

  • @Freebyrd1991 Coldplay is Genius.

  • I know Coldplay ripped Satch off and thats why it sounds so good together, but it really does. Almost makes Coldplay not sound gay when you throw in some blistering Satriani guitar

  • @erikm12 I'm sorry. But Coldplay rocks Joe Satrani's socks. No joke. That is the only part of the entire damn song that sounds the same, and Coldplay's songs have always sounded similar to that note mix. It's nearly impossible to find some kind of note mix that hasn't been done, so get your head out of your ass and accept it. 10 seconds of similar sounding stuff is not enough grounds to sue off of.

  • i think someone messed with the tune of both songs . . .

  • i saw another video that showed acual qoutes of the Coldplay bandmembers fully admitting that they almost always copy other bans, but do it in such a way that it isn't noticeable. One of the Coldplay dudes even mentioned that they have copied the Beatles, thinking that it won't matter because almost all the Beatles are dead. Talk about un-talented!

  • imho coldplay sounds better and it is a bit different and dont be a hater

  • @JAPANTUNER100 Not hater here . . .

  • @coratican good job non hater dude

  • Wow really? whoever is saying bad stuff about joe satriani can go suck a magnum. Sadly, in the world of music. there are geniuses and there are he leaches. you get the picture.
