This is 23rd anniversay. I just spent the day in Corsica and we went to where it happened. I have his photographs lining the walls of my house so it is like he is watching me. Rest in peace Uncle Henkka, we all still miss you. I will make sure Airikkala pays for it.
They're dead the same day (may,2nd 1986), same place (Tour de Corse), same car number (nr.4) of Attilio Bettega one year before..Just heroes, that dedicated their lives to races and lost it..
The fuel tank was aluminium, without the self-sealing linings they have nowadays. There was also no underbody skid plate, they were generally only fitted for gravel rallies. As a result, the tank was ruptured by the trees and the spilling fuel ignited.
And this is the worst thing; for better weight distribution the tank was under the driver's seat. Add the fast-burning composite body and they had no chance once it went on fire.
i dunno i didn't see that, but was just told by someone who was servicing another competitor at the time that henry made it out of the car, maybe it's just a tragic rumorthough, and it doesn't matter, he could drive a rally car.
Makes me sad :( Rest in peace. Henry Toivonen was from the same town than me. I still remember him "terrorising" our small hometowns streets with terrible speeding when i was kid.
nothing wrong with having cars as powerfull as that.
Main issue is that the level of safety wall well bellow that it was cos f the speeds invoilved.
If they reintroduced group b it would not be anywhere near as dangerous cos the tracks are safer, less people on the track, and the cars will be much much stronger.
great great men. true legends of wrc. " if something goes wrong or one of makes a mistake were dead" the fatal last words. Those Lancia rally cars were packing as much power as a modern day f1 car and could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds
it was crazy for the fia to ever allow those cars to get so powerfull.
Henri was ill at the time of the accident. He shouldn't have raced. In an interview just before the accident Henri was complaining that Group B cars were too powerful for the rally.
toivonen y cresto dos grandes personajes en el mundo de los rallyes que murieron aciendo lo k mas les gusta i desde mallorca deseo k descanseis en paz
Yeah, it was reported that Henri was suffering from the flu during the event but insisted on driving anyway. He was reported as saying that the Delta S4 was too powerful for the Tour de Corse. He was also complaining of the balance of the car. So to help the balance, Lancia removed the skid plates. So when his car went off the road into the brush below, the fuel tanks ruptured and it caught on fire instantly. I agree, a tragic way to lose your life.
He dies doing what he loved - Not too shabby in my books - but of course the crew's tragic deaths weren't the only ones - this accident was the beginning of the end for the awesome group B rally cars - such a shame - modern machinery and driver's are way less flamboyant and exciting
Actually the first people came to the scene just few minutes after the crash..Bruno Saby and his co-driver. He called help with radio and told that there's a big accident and fire and Henri is dead..
theres in-car camera footage and yoy can see how fast Henri drives. He was sick at the time of the accident and its not possible to control a car like that if youre not in a condition.
Yeah i saw the video of what was his last interview the day before his fatal crash and he didn't look good at all, he looked dizzy and sort of comatose like.he should have not been driving in the condition he was in at the time.
mothafukka's right. the only footage they got was way afterwards at the crashsite, and all that remained of the Lancia (and the crew?) was just a black, hot smoking shell. R.I.P Henri and Sergio.
It was caught on tape, because this is it. It was filmed by a spectator much further up the stage. Obviously this footage is still not enough to determine what caused the crash, which is what most people refer to when they say there's no footage of the accident. Check Wikipedia, that confirms that this footage is of Henri's accident.
Henri Toivonen is still sadly missed. Seeing video (this one) and picture (the corner and road)material of his crash scene, I reckon he cut the corner too much. This caused him to hit the inside of the corner wich simply launched the Lancia into the ravine. This is just my view. Their's never been any confirmation about the real cause of the crash.
i remember reading about this...poor dude...those s4's were a handful from what i've heard...0-100km/h on gravel in something like 2.5 seconds...that kind of speed on a rally is just dangerous
