When a group appears as "The Chantels," I'd prefer to hear Arlene Smith and whomever group members still sing with her. Blessings... whatever. The same goes for the Shangri-Las, etc etc etc etc . Just because some cigar chomping sharkie bought the trademark ....

@PREZ150 She still sings , sometimes she will join the group ,but she goes out alone most of the time . Back up singers are easy to find that can read and sing the original charts . So Arlene goes out on her own ,and still performs , and still sounds as good as she ever has . Does alot of Fla gigs  Thanks Ken The Legends Of Rock & Roll Concerts

@57highland Sorry , but non are the originals,but they do hold the trade mark and can go out as The Chantels, and have the blessing from Arlene . On occasions Arlene will appear with them billed as The original lead singer . Just because your were the lead singer in any particular group ,does not mean you can go out as that group unless you have filed for the trade mark , and own it , in order to call yourself that particular groups name. @mrconcertman Yes, I've read similar stories. I've never read that law, but for example, there is a male group from that era, The Duprees, and they're not the originals, and two of the originals are still alive. And a commentor said they are suing to get the name back. I guess sometimes you do get the originals, since I saw The Chiffons about 17 years ago, and after they sang a few songs, one of them said, "We ARE the Chiffons, the original group."

@57highland Yes you do ,but not always will they carry the name , and even sometimes you have to take what they say with a grain of salt also .Yes the Chiffons is a fine example The law says you have to have sung on the record ,been apart of the original group to call yourself the groups name , and also own the trade mark .Other than that your a tribute group, identifying yourself as such . Jay Black ,best singer ever cant say Jay & the Americans only formally of ? does! not own trademark sad ?

@mrconcertman Not to go on & on, but a big case of this was the Kingsmen. They had a line-up change after the big success of "Louie Louie." The guy who sang lead on that song then left the group, and the existing drummer became the lead singer (and owner of the group's name!) The legal outcome was that the original singer of "Louie" couldn't call himself a "Kingsman" (except for "formerly") and the new K'men had to identify him (and likely pay him) as the lead singer on all subsequent releases.

@57highland Duprees bogus as they come ive even said that to alot of people that thought on their site they were real . No theres only one member left and that Mike Kelly ,stripped of all his rights to use the name ,hes in court trying to get the name back from the bogus Duprees . Actually mike was not a true original as from day one ,but was with them in voice on the records for many years ,and can bid for the trademark . Hes the only remaining member left today The rest are phonies , also sad

Though not a particular fan of the, "new recording by

the original artist" release...I find this one to be very

good. The CHANTELLS should have already been

honored with a selection to the Rock 'N' Roll Hall

Of Fame. Thanks for sharing.
