@blairomatic Every all rounder has a strong side; but the definition of an all-rounder is as you would put it "can bat a bit, bowl a bit and field a bit". I'd say Dilshan and Hafeez were batsmen who could bowl a bit, yet they are both in the top 10 of the ICC all rounder rankings.
dear bailstv i was refering to the cricket gratest bowlers imran, wasim and waqar, not current generation mislead boys. i hope i did not offend you by any means.
Can anyone upload some footage of Sylvester Clarke? heard he was the fastest of all the widies bowlers and the most feared as well, would be great to watch him in action, thanks.
@toursanxterme11 Not per se the fastest, but certainly the most awkward. He had a powerful shoulder jerk and could get the ball to lift alarmingly and snake back on even the most docile pitches. That's what made him dangerous - most of his bouncers would be relatively good length and coming at your temple. Croft was another seriosuly nasty bowler, but not as quick as Holding or (later) Bishop and Patterson.
@Imrankniazi yea but i cant tell for sure, because I've heard of him never seen him bowling,m desperate to see how he did his work...once i had the pleasure to meet Imran Khan and had a slightly informal conversation with him on the topic of cricket, actually he was the one to tell me that Clarke was the fastest and most vicious, but that was in the county cricket section every one feared him.but again coming from him thomo was the fastest he ever saw,and m really desperate to see Clarks action!
@toursanxterme11 I'll try to give you a picture. Sylvester had a short run-up and really muscled in the ball with a front-on extremely whippy action. See a video of John Snow and the build-up before release is somewhat similar.
Sylvy Clarke was a carpenter by profession and working with wood since an early age gave him immensely powerful shoulders. He had a short run-up - about as long as Simon Jones' (15-16 paces) but would really hurtle it in. I'll let you know if I find a video link!
@Imrankniazi Thanks mate,i have seen the picture though Clarke in delivery stride, but a video for me would be more revealing over what sort of technique he used to get it so fast and bounce so awkward of a short run.thanks again mate, have a goodn
So Lyod moved Roberts to that spot. that means that holding was bowling so fast that the edge WOULD HAVE carried to that spot...it had to be an edge for the ball to go there- I am talking about the last wicket of course.
@AIMANALI It seems that the plan was for Holding to bowl a short one slightly wide of off-stump. In that case, the hook is expected to go finer and also the chance of top-edging are greater. Looks like the Lloyd-Roberts-Mike trio planned it out and apparently it worked to perfection.
@Imrankniazi I agree . All I am saying is that that edge went a LONG way. usually very thick edges go a long way because they almost full shots - but this is a fine edge and it still went that far (not sure how big the ground was)- that is some pace. If Thommo had done that we would never heard the end of it LOL
this is absolutely breathtaking just how smooth the guy was. he could do the 100m in 11 seconds. His action is just so beautiful to watch. Speed, accuracy, control, aggression, the guy had it all, a great thinker just like dennis lillee.
@AIMANALI Some from the 1984 tour and some from the 1976 tour to England. Gower, Lamb and others were of course not there in 76. Greig's leg-stump cartwheeling is unmistakably Oval 1976!
@Imrankniazi I did you upload that ? Thx a million . I really want to see clips of Holding in West Indies back in the 1970s. that would be something. Also ALL the Kerry packer matches that would be something
If a short run would've worked better for him, he would have taken a shorter run. But he didn't did he? He was also a 400metre runner which meant that he took a such a gigantic run-up precisely because it built up pace and rhythm, which he wouldn't have been able to do so otherwise. What? You think Dennis Lillee shouldn't have just taken half a dozen steps too?
this guy ws the fastest bowler in history and his rhythm and run up is majestic. the best thing about the windies in their prime was they were all great athletes and ambasadors. tony greig crawl matey
he has a such a rythmical and beautiful bowling action and run-up. i always love watching windies cricket. they r all time greats, the windies bowlers. hats off!

Holding, Richard Hadlee, Kapil Dev, Imran Khan, Ian Botham..... will there ever be a generation of better all-rounders in cricket?
wierdwesterner 7 months ago
@wierdwesterner Holding wasn't an 'all-rounder'. He was a great fast bowler who could bat a bit.
The definition of all-rounder is that the player could hold their place in the side with either bat or ball.
There was no way Holding would've been picked on batting alone.

Fearsome bowling. Love the way he runs quickly up then relaxes into his stride and delivers.

One of the most aesthetic pleasing actions producing the most venomous of deliveries

no doubt Holding was one of all times greats. apart from his furious speed and deadly accuracy just see how much rhythmic
and poetic was his run up and action. looks so easy no fuss at all with deadliest of results... A great bowler no doubt

Not many these days like him.
Really quick.
Accurate.
Nasty.
Vicious.
Hostile.
Fucking scary, I wouldn't have wanted to face him.....and I probably wouldn't be for long....LOL.
He seems a really sound bloke off the pitch though.

Holding running in to bowl is as poetic and smooth as cricket can get.

He still would of been able to bowl 150k off half his run but would of lost rhythm and accuracy.
DKLillee355 2 years ago 2
he probably didn't need to come off such a long run up, bit of a waste of time would of been just as quick and accurate off half that run.
