This is awful, but its kinda common in places. I know that many people underestimate the undertow, thinking that they could fight the oceans current. I live near Galveston Tx and the San Louis Pass area is especially deadly due to the strong currents.
I was caught in an undertow a few months ago and it took me 30 minutes to make it back to shore, exhausted.
The ocean is big and unforgiving, treat it with respect.
