The weird thing is, we usually speak English in America to each other, but we have a habbit of mixing Chinese words & prazes into it. Alot of Chines people do that around here, but, I'm so used to it by now... but, when I'm among non-Chinese and I do that, people are totally lost.
We actually mostly watch Chinese TV together...
And, when we live in China, I eventually stop speaking English and will mostly speak Chinese...
I know Taiwan is starting to promote travel for the Mainland Chinese to visit now. But, it's still not easy. My husband's Visa is still P.R. China. The American government still hasn't given him his American Pasport yet.
My husband has relatives in taiwan that ran away durring the Cultural revolution. But, for some reason they have a snobby aditude towrds all of us. Even several of them who moved to America. They never answer our phone calls.
We still don't understand why the behave like this... but, we still love them, and still send them cards, or letters. It's my father-in-law's sister whom left. ll of her familly is so quiet to us. No one understands why, and makes them very sad.
But, the relatives which moved to Mongolia are still talking to us. They come to visit us, and we visited them. My father-in-law's Jiejie just died, and the familly in Taiwan was also notified. But, they never called back, or aknowleged it.
I'm really sorry to hear that... It's all because of the sick politics and the over 50 year separation... always takes time and hard to explain why it happens to your husband and family. but I've heard some good examples that the same families in Taiwan and China still have nice relationships although they had lost contact during the Cultural revolution. and They still visit each other on vacations..sorry something bad happens to your husband and family.. I am also sick of politics..
It's getting much better now. I'be been coming to China almost every year since 2002, and this year I don't often see people spitting i public. I think they are all beginning to collectively have more pride in thigs, due to the Olympics. ^_^
good luck in Bei Jing (I was born there) and if you are going to Guang Dong, good luck too (I lived in Guang Xi for 13 years, they're really close to each other, and they also speak Cantonese there)
my dad have a big house over in Guang Xi, i don't mind kicking it to you, it'll probably save you some hotel money, but its too much of a hassel. i'm going to school and all, i'm not really finacially stable yet.
why don't love china?

I actually have a good impression of Hu & Wen.
I was in China during the Wechuan earthquake, and the leaders went to help and cried with cameras on.

No need to cross the border. you can pretty much experience the same thing in China's Inner Mongolia Province.
