  • if you western guys can't distinguish each difference of asian culture or songs whatever..

    then don't say anythings...

  • If it's any consolation to you, in the eyes of a spaniard there is no difference between Japanese and Koreans. I guess it will be the same like you do between the spaniards and Argentine people. You can call it ignorance, you can call it lack of prejudices. Or both.

  • Japanese people i dont understand how can you guys change the name of Korean traditional song in to Japanese .. It is true that joe hirashi is playing piano but this is Korean traditional song

  • 두종류의 아리랑을 녹여내다니... 멋지심~~

  • Please change title Korean tranditional song - Arirang by Joe Hisashi.....

It's korean song not Japanese one

  • How will things get better if Koreans and Japanese keep alive their old prejudices? And by your logic, we should all denounce every song written in and about America, since the creation of America was made possible only through the systematic genocide of native Americans. How about this for a watchword: never forget the past, but let's not let the crimes of someone's forebears color our perceptions of their descendants. I want to see Korea and Japan as they should be: brothers and sisters.

  • The first part was very traditional korean, the middle was very japanese, and the last part was full of reconciliation. I hear you, Joe.

  • china trys to steal arirang song from korean! china will destroy every culture!

  • @yoonkim1982

    and Joe is Japanese..

  • He is not Joe= = and this song is not he writed

  • @amy9530 it is joe.

  • @amy9530 Joe is on the piano. He didn't write the song, but he organized this version.

  • why's everyone particular and surprised with a japanese playing a korean song? Music knows no boundaries, that is what Mr Hisaishi is displaying :)

  • @MrOdl86 it is kind of strange for a man from a country that caused so much oppression and torture to Koreans play a song that symbolizes their struggle. I'm keeping a neutral opinion, but this song really symbolizes Koreans going through the struggle mainly the japanese caused and has never formally apologized to this day (not to mention it's a ongoing issue since japan continues to aggrevate Koreans regarding this matter)

  • @tokee1234567

While I would be the first to acknowledge that the sins of imperial Japan are no light matter (I am a Japanese person and I teach Korean in the US), your sentiment is misguided. You use "Japanese" as a monolithic term when it clearly is not; there are many Japanese people who feel remorse for their country's past. Hisaishi Joo is clearly one of them, and you are mistaking his love of music for rubbing salt into Korean wounds.

  • listen to the crowd <3 sent chills down my back. Joe Hisashi :D

  • it's a beautiful rendition. bit puzzled and disturbed by a Japanese playing it.

  • @dogbutter99

lol why does it matter. its good music.

  • he played very well, I can feel a lot of emotion in each note.

  • thank you joe, for performing our awesome piece

  • awhhhh so soothing! i'd fallen in love with this man and his music for so long now...

  • Proof that music has no boundaries, and that Japan and South Korea are both individually good, but fantastic together. This is truly lovely.

  • I wonder why we can't live in peace together? So much confusion and frustration. It was nice to Joe to play my nation's song. Makes me happy to Japanese Musicians. :) Joe Hisaishi is my top favorite musicians. Arirang is for the hardships for the people in Korea, how they fought against North and South. GO HISAISHI!!!

  • awsome sooooo beautiful hes a master!! i am korean too!!

  • wow ... this guy and his orchestra is amazing...

  • Yeah Curly, but it is better to write your love letters to your uncle Kim, who has really a lot of experience with it.

  • this music has nothing to do with politics however many years ago it was. get over it.

  • you are a ignorant cunt yasgur

  • I agree with you 100 percent. Arirang can only be played by japanese when japan come clean with the reparations for all the atrocious crimes committed during the colonial period...this is ridiculous indeed.

  • Did Joe Hisaishi kill a Korean? Let alone, anyone at all?

Let the man play a song if he wants to. So be it.

    It's not gonna hurt anyone.

Holding such close minded views will get you nowhere.

  • Thank you

  • Why couldn't you be more like Tenchijk and just appreciate the fact that a Japanese man would enjoy a Korean composition so much that he'd actually conduct an orchestrated version of it on his own time?

Did the Nazis ever formally apologize to the Jews? Did Europe ever apologize to the Mesoamerican civilizations? Did they apologize to the Native Americans?

Just keep moving forward and know that the Japan that you hated so much is now led by a new generation with a clean slate and fresh views.

  • @SinOfANBU

we don't hate Japanese new generations or people who acknowledge war crime which they did to korean peoples before august 1945 and love korea. we just hate and attack the Japanese Right who said they didn't any war crimes in Korea and other Asian Countries in during of War. even they go to Yasukuni shrine to worship the evils who killed millions of Asian People.

  • Besides. As a Korean myself, I feel that the hostility that many of us show the Japanese is just uncalled for. What's done has been done. There's nothing that can be changed past this point. The only thing that you can do is move on and realize that the Japanese are no different than any other race.

lchaney214's reply also coincides with my point.

  • We are all the same people with sinning hearts that make us equal.

A brother may hurt another or two, but just remember that he's no different than you.

  • All sins are the same, bro. No sin is greater than another. But yes, sins are different depending on what a certain group considers sinful. But Joe Hisaishi should not be bound by the sins that his people committed.

  • Well then you might find the New York symphony's performance of Arirang in Pyongyang offensive considering they are Americans, although I found it thoroughly moving. Are you saying because he was born a Japanese person he is inherently evil and could never understand the concepts of good and unity?

  • I bet Joe knows Arirang better then you will ever do if you continue to live your life like an idiot. Japanese are fantastic people just like any of us, except people like you who fail ot see how much love people have and think that you are better then Japanese. If you think like that you are no different from the people who violated koreans back then. You are no better then Nazis who think Jews whould all die and Germans are the most supereior race.

  • @yasgur74 Tell you what. If you can understand what Arirang is better then anyother person in this world with basic understanding of arirang tell me. The original lyrics of Arirang has been altered for years. and the only thing that the song has in common with its original is the love that went into this song over the years. If you can put that in words tell me. I chalange you if you can feel love more then anyone in this world. Tell me if you can express love better then Joe Hisaishi.

  • It's so nice of Mr Fujiwara (i.e. Hisaishi) to take a consider at Korean music. Particularly like the section from 1:22. Good on him =]

  • I really like this version a lot.

I've been a Joe Hisaishi fan since I was a kid, and there's really a "Joe Hisaishi feel" to this version.

  • love

  • This melody is so beautiful.

    It breaks your heart.

  • DAMN THIS IS THE SICKEST VERSION EVERRRR. i want to sing along

  • its beautiful!

  • very touching...i have goose bumps...i korean culture and enjoy South korean movies and drams...my life wouldn't be complete if don't visit South korea once in my life

  • I agree with u (:

  • Is this their anthem? it makes our "Star Spangled Banner" sound so shitty in comparison. :[ boo.

  • well, you do know that the tune was originally a popular English drinking tune, so...:P haha

  • the tune of the star spangled banner, i mean

  • yeah, i know. we just kind of ripped it off.

    :[

  • CAN YOU RESIST?!

    This is beautiful.

  • hi, i am from Perú, i like Arirang TV 0_0, this song i listened there, it is so beatiful, but i dont know . What does Arirang mean?, Can you tell me the meaning?, Thanks you.

    excuseme my english.:)

  • Arrirang is a hill in Korea, that the Korean people created this song after in the name of peace. The song is about walking over the hill to peace and freedom.

  • Arirang is a Korean folk song, transmitted mouth -by-mouth in history.

It's more like love song because it talks about the loved one left behind.

  • Kind of a morbid love song though, if you ask me.

  • "morbid" is not the right word.

    "sad" probably describes it better.

  • How about "melancholy"? I like how a lot of Korean tunes combine sweetness and sadness together.

  • Mr. Hisaishi is amazing, it would be a delightful experience if i get the change to meet or even attend one of his concert.

  • oh my god yes. besides being crazilly talented and amazing, he is an adorable old man. :]

  • The song made me cry!

  • I love this deeply.

  • 아리랑 아리랑 아라리요.

    (arirang arirang arariyo)

    아리랑 고개를 넘어간다.

    (arirang gogaero numuganda)

    나를 버리고 가시는 님은

    (narulburigo gashinunnimun)

    십리도 못가서 발병난다.

    (shiprido motgasu balbyongnanda)

  • God that was just amazing.

  • 눈물난는 노래다~~

  • Yes, I cried myself. ;)

  • can anyone tell me the story behind dis song?? thanks

  • the song's about a girl whose talking about a lover who abandoned her and is walking through the Arirang Valley. She hopes that he won't be able to get further than 2 miles before his feet start hurting.

  • A subtle message: The tragedy of the Division of North and South Korea

  • I always thought it was about a woman whose lover left her standing at the Arirang pass because HER feet hurt so badly that she could not follow? What do you think?

  • well, true, arirang is about a parting of husband and wife. but like koreanempire said, it could mean how the people of both north and south wait in heart to be with together again.

any more views? i'd be delighted to hear them. =)

  • lol taht is right.

  • @mrknoweverything You are so cute~~

  • its just history that made us scarred. overall, were on good terms, to the point where there is samsung in tokyo and sony in seoul.

  • Arirang Hisaishi style.. wow. Especially at 2:27 it's such a classic Hisaishi cadence which he uses all the time. ( :

Not sure what the middle stuff was about though. Does anyone know what the counter melody is, or where it's from? Or did Hisaishi just threw it in there?

  • It's from a different version of Arirang, I think - or maybe another Korean folk song. I'm pretty sure I've heard it in something Korean before though.

  • even though i'm korean i've got to hand it to the japanese for polishing up songs and (most of the time) turning them into amazing sequences of notes. they can turn even the simplest tune into a masterpiece. i mean, take a look at their video game soundtracks and drama theme songs

  • 1stAirborne~That must mean that the song (Arirang) was awesome to begin with! I'm Japanese (American) but I love Korea forever.

  • and I'm Korean (American) but respect Japan greatly! ... Dang, why can't our governments and media get a long?

  • That's true what you said. A lot of times it's the governments who can't or won't get see eye to eye for whatever reasons-most times the people get along fine!

  • No, I really do love Korea and I'm sorry that you're such a miserable person.

  • holy shit I played a version of this way bak in the 6th grade. This is nice to see this again.

  • I love this tune :)

  • wow.

  • Joe Hisaishi did awesome job

  • 아리랑 좋다..

  • Besides history, Japan and Korea is actually on good terms. The bad history between the two makes everything seem totally separated.

  • wow.... never knew arirang was such a sad sounding tune.. this was beautiful

  • japs and chinese

  • Alot of Koreans hate Japanese too (because of the war). But actually its ANYONE unable to look forward and move on from the past.

  • a lot of the asian countries find it hard to move on from the past because they regard history as very important in their lives and the way they live.

  • wow~ what an honor for THE Hisaishi Joe to performe THE traditional Korean piece. Very moving. I wonder if he also performed Toraji.

  • whoa

i thought it said what a horror

    lol

  • This is such a beautiful song! And I love Joe Hisaishi ^_^

  • Anybody know where to get an audio version of this?

  • Thank you for posting this song. This song always make me tear

  • such a beautiful song..always mesmorized..

  • .. its a korean traditional song

  • this is really good

  • Beaurritigood.

  • 오홋!~~~ 눈물이 나오려고하네요

    Wow~~~~~ I like the arrangement it's awesome~!

  • Joe Hisaishi is a brilliant composer.

I love all of his music.

  • yeah i love his music

but then.. i think ( in my opinion)

arirang rhapsody by lee jisu is better

    try it!

  • Arirang is such a beautiful song~I think it's probably the only folk song I like and will listen to..xD

  • does this mean Joe Hisaishi is usually working in Korea (or with Korean musicians?)

  • Well Joe Hisaishi has done the music for several Korean movies such as Memories of Murder and Welcome to Dongmakgol.

  • :) Very soothing to listen to. I love this song, especially this arrangement.
