  • Except being able to actually understand the lyrics. As much as I love the Pogues that's one area that Shane MacGowan really has problems with sometimes.

  • the whole cd is remakes and covers paying homage to Ireland

  • As much as I love the Pogues version I can agree with those who say this version is better. It just seems more...upbeat I suppose. I like that.

  • @Bryan198026 No way, this is a great cover indeed, but nothing can match the raw power of Shane's voice!

  • Thank GOD they came out with a version of this song! Personally, I like this sound better than Pogues (well-deserved name, I might add).

  • You want to know what Shane would say to you little whiny ass i-ties? Póg... my... arse, or pogue mahone. You pick.

  • had a guinness and saw them play at world cafe live wilmington. first time they played in DE

  • not bad at all

    good sound boys

  • it's mandatory for any celtic group to do a rendition of this classic

  • If the Good Lord Hadn't invented whiskey, the Irish would have taken over the WORLD, LOL...

  • @Bonedigger1015 That's what they say, but I blame fucking Pommies.

  • Im the only one at my school who doesn't like rap and i'm proud of that.

  • From Traditional Irish Tunes to Awesome covers to Hard Rockin' Originals, The Young Dubs are a great band. Go see them live!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ijust love it.

  • This is the first time I've actually heard the lyrics to this song. I never knew what the hell Shane McGowan was saying.

  • I love these guys because they take the old folk songs that i love and give them a new, younger sound. Kinda like Dropkick Murphys a bit but tending to stay a little traditional sounding. Love it.

  • Both versions are great!

  • Great version!

  • The Pogues? Drunken beasts. I've become friends with Keith and we're working on a film project.

  • sham is no shane mcgowen!

  • AMAZING Cover

  • fucking aye!

  • What is this for some plastic shit! Thank God for The Pogues and Greenland Whalefishers!!!

  • Ehh... I prefer the scraggly voice of Shane McGowan from The Pogues as opposed to this.

  • @charredsoul no one gives a shit what you prefer son.

  • @charredsoul Is iad na Pogues cac.

  • the replay button got raped cause of this GREAT SONG!:DDD

  • @smokeawaybarmey Apart from Shane, Phil, Andrew and Cait, Terry Woods is from Dublin, so it would be fair to describe them as an Anglo- Irish band.

  • well said cymrofinnegan! Folk is meant to played and played again and again! its open for interpretation

  • @smokeawaybarmey I most certainly will. May I also suggest you take a look at “A Pair of Brown Eyes” cover by the young dubs which I think is still floating round the tube. I’m sure the original will still hold a place in your heart but they really come into their own on that song; I find it better. (But that is one guy’s thoughts!) The words a defiantly a lot clearer then when you know who sings it XD

  • 8 people think The Pougles are the only Irish band on the face of the earth! (I am glad they are not :)

  • i love the fiddle in this...

  • Looks like 7 people have no idea what music is

  • @excitedbike Or perhaps this just isn't their thing?

  • This is by far the best cover on Youtube... But the song feels somewhat empty, as if the violin doesn't fully compensate for not having an accordion.

  • this is a good version !

i just love the the bit in the original when shane shreiks/wails

  • Pretty sure that Shane Mcgowan is proud of this. He is bringing Irish folk music further and this is a great, but slightly different version:) Enjoyed it.

  • Very cool version of a great song. Shane is God!!

  • A beautiful cover of a terrific tune! (And the lyrics a little easier to make out than you-know-who's, LOL). Keep it up, lads. Best wishes from northwest Pennsylvania, USA.

  • stop arguing

enjoy this beautiful song like I do :D

  • u guys are idiots, but its ok because this song is "off the hook" as they say

  • Hey wat is it with oyur dumb name anyways? Whatsup? I think we can anser THAT question fag!!!

  • @oxfordbiker dude, racist much? people are just fuckin people man chill

  • Its an honest mistake. Have fun with it. Personally I would appreciate going more old school or more new sounding with it. Its like right in the middle and thats not where I'm at.

  • Its alright, hes just about 8 pints of whiskey off getting the vocals right..

  • No one would drink whiskey in pints.

  • I'd rather would

  • Not the same without the Banshee-like screech from Macgowan (which by hte way can be heard for almost a mile away [from experience])

Decent attempt but ultimately a hopeless case trying to match the original

  • a great cover, but sub par to the pogues

  • True, but then, what isn't subpar compared to the Pogues?

  • @FNGamer

    Good Point!

  • I love 'em !! I saw them live and I've been hooked ever since.....

  • Meh...it's good but not a patch on the pogues

  • @happygoluckyscamp:

The Pogues had MacGowan, what do you expect?

  • just what i'm thinking!

  • Great version of the song! I love seeing folk rock bands cover old songs, both traditional and by other folk or folk rock artists. It shows that they're truly keeping the folk traditions alive, in their own way, and not just taking an aesthetic or sound and plastering it over generic rock or punk.

  • I saw the Young Dubliners do an in store appearance at the Virgin store in SF before it closed and they did a good set.

  • Great Song! I Love Young Dubliners!

  • Wonderful version!

  • As much as I LOVE the Pogues, I think this version is really good, too! I've checked out a few more covers from Young Dubliners ("Leaving of Liverpool" and "Tell me Ma") and they were great as well! The lead singer looks very sympathetic and cool and I like his voice! Pogues are brilliant, probably best band of all time, but the Young Dubliners surely rock! So you should not accuse them for covering a Pogues Song! That's pretty childish!

  • if your sade, just put 'young dubliners' on - that should solve your problem"! (:

  • amen to that brother

  • i am a fan of the young dubliners; but their version of this songa lacks the energy that the pogues had (way too mellow)

  • Well, in all fairness, The Pogues are a punk band, the Dubs are not. :)

  • I hate all these whingey comments on folk videos about being better or worse than "originals." It completely destroys the spirit of folk.

Folk isn't like your little shitty pop bands, nobody cares who did the "original" or who did the "cover." Just appreciate every version for it's differences!

  • Well said! =)

  • This isn't folk, its Celtic Punk...and the Pogues own it!

  • Of course it's folk. "Celtic Punk" is just a pseudo-genre invented by the media to sell Flogging Molly, The Dropkick Murphys, The Tossers and co' to kids that think they understand what punk actually means.

  • they have their faults but DKM and Flogging Molly are both decent bands

  • Hate to break it to you... This is a super old IRISH FOLK SONG. The Pogues are punk, Young Dubs are rock... It's a matter of preference, all the remakes. There have been hundreds of remakes /takes on this song over hundreds of years... But this is a traditional Irish FOLK song that goes WAY back.

  • "If I should fall fro grace" was written by Shane Macgowen, lead singer of the pogues. It was also the title of their 3rd album.

  • Oh, I beg your pardon. I was listening to Dubs videos a plenty and I thought I was commenting on "Follow Me Up To Carlow". :)

  • Exactly! The beauty of folk music, in all it's forms, is that the artists are not merely presenting their work to an audience, but GIVING it to them. Folk songs where gifts from the artist to their culture, and it was an honour that it should be adopted by other musicians. Modern mainstream music likes that old spirit of communal possession of culture, so it's good to see it kept alive by bands like the Young Dubliners.

  • @CymroFinnegan agreed

  • @CymroFinnegan That's the spirit of punk as well. I hope Shane MacGowan would agree with me in saying just enjoy the feckin' music!

  • @CymroFinnegan I wholeheartedly agree with this.

  • @CymroFinnegan dont know if I double posted this but thats the point folk music is supposed to be sung by the people thats why is folk its for common folks thats why most the music is easily understood

  • it just doesn't have Shane's raspy drunken voice, it doesn't make this worse or better. Just different

  • Total Shite. How to murder a classic exhibit #1. As for Smoothness, fuckin hell go and buy an eagles record.

  • Yeah I love these guys! The New album is now 7.99 on iTunes! Can't be that!

  • I agree 100% army ... this version rocks and is even better than the Pogues. I know for some that is heresy, but hey, I like this set and harmony. It just works better. Plus, the Young Dubliners are a whole lot more accessable than the Pogues.

  • Gotta say I like this version better than the Pogues..... Both nice, just like the smoothness of this one.

  • Comment removed

  • Brilliant guys! I'm not as much into their older stuff, but their all Irish folk CD is great. I can't get enough of Foggy Dew, and Follow me up to Carlow.

  • Then check out their original material! They really do rock!

  • if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

  • i prefer YD's version but the pogues are great too

  • I love this song... by The Pogues. These guys ruined it. You can't alter one note without destroying the song... so don't YD!

But YD is still great. Putting out Irish folk to a younger crowd :D

  • boy they really took all the energy out of this song.

  • good cover, but no one beats The Pogues!

  • this band rules !! fuck you !!

  • it's like listening to a cover of a Beatle song...nothing can beat the real thing.

  • The Young Dubs totally rock and have done a spectacular job following the sense, the feeling, the mood of the original, the Pogues ... and for me, the YDs are not only more available to the general public, but also more true rockers

  • how can you be more of a true rocker than Shane MacGowan?!?

  • sorry, but no.

  • good "modern" rendition of this old song, but sounds a little to much like the orginal.

  • '88 is only 20 years ago. The original is not an old song in the sense of Irish folk.

  • Nice, sounds very much like the original. Good job.

  • Of course The Pogues version is better, you can't improve on perfection. That being said, I do enjoy the Young Dubliners' version. For all you idiots knocking on Shane because of his voice, STFU! Shane MacGowan is maybe the greatest living songwriter. Music isn't all about who can sing better. If it was, nobody would give a shit about Bob Dylan.

  • Word.

  • pogues are better..... all i have to say.

  • A vote was taken and it was unanimous - madhatter is a douche. The fiddle player in this band plays keyboards, mandolin and harmonica in addition to his fiddle duties - he's got more talent in his pinky than McGowan ever thought about having...drunken sot that he is. (and if he's dead already then my apologies to the deceased) (and if he's not dead then my god - how has that not happened yet...my poor liver!)

  • No offense, but I think you're being a little unfair to Shane. He was/is a good musical artist, but I won't say his version is better than this. I won't say this version is better than his (Though it is AMAZING!), either. It's different. And that's the beauty of Irish music- every performer can make the same song sound different and wonderful.

  • I think Shane's liver would say the same...that it wasn't being treated fairly.

Sorry, you are right - he WAS an amazing talent. I just get pissed when someone squanders their God given talent on booze and drugs...what a waste!

  • Here, we agree. Let's hope these bhoys don't go the same route as Shane.

  • nice way to type arsehole as a nice word.

i know shane do drugs and stuff and hell yeah he's wasted. But He did great songs.

By the ay he`s Fifty by now. And boo-hoo I don`t care 'bout some lame wimps who don't understand sarcasm. Go play while evil bastards drink a pint.

  • shane is the only person that´s allowed to sing this song.

Never Mind Young Dubliners Here´s The Pogues

  • A "modern" version, but somehow I most definately love shane's rough voice and accent for this song...

  • needs a lot of talent to turn a great folkpunksong into this crap...nyah shouldnt get so angry. my poor heart.

  • This version's way better than the Pogues. McGowan needs to sober up and learn that singing involves actually moving the mouth. At least I can understand the words to this one. Young Dubliners own this song. Erin go bragh!

  • Shamrock Ultras and Ireland forver!

  • a good song !it seams Good chance for You!!!

  • no way young dubliners play this song way better than pogues

  • i saw you guys in Fredericia in ''Statoil''

you were driving in a grey bus/car.

i talked to you'r sound engineer. he was from Los Angeles. And by the way he's was very nice

  • Thank you for visiting Viborg guys - What a show that was!

  • argh...

and i thought fiddlers green would suck -.-

i don't know, i think there are songs in the world wich you just shouldnt cover...

  • i know who bren is (bass) i have his giutar in my house hes my sis's freind

  • i saw them play yesterday!

    there really good live!

and i took a pic with Bob(the guitarist)

  • i saw them play yesterday!

    there really good live!

and i took a pic with Bob(the guitarist)

  • Awesome!

  • wow they butchered this song.

  • What didn't you like about it?

  • well it started off pretty well, but it just seemed like it was sang wrong. and i didn't like the breakdowns for the verses.

  • yeah i would say the pogues own this song.

  • They were supposedly in Denver last night. Anybody know about that?

  • This is very good!

  • The whole Album is amazing. Great version a lot better then the Pogues

  • Agree - these guys do the Pogues better than the Pogues...

  • See reply to the root comment.

  • Sorry sir, this is indeed a worthy and rocking cover, but nothing beats the Pogues. End of story. Full stop.

  • To each their own, I suppose. I like the Pogues in small doses. I've never really cared for Shane McGowan's singing though. In any case, I can't get enough of the Dub's and see them every time they are in town, which isn't often enough...

  • LOVED YOU IN BAY CITY BOYS! See you in Cleveland...

  • We used to go and see Keith and the lads play before they emigrated to the states which was some time ago. Cant wait to see them in Dublin at the end of March. Huge gang making plans to hit Whelan's pub in Dublin.

  • where can you get this in mp3 format?

  • love these guys, went to a bunch of their concerts.

chas is a friend of my dads, and works with his brother.

fun on their tourbus, aha good times x]

  • saw them as jethro tull's supporting group in june 2001. Ok, Tull are tull, but their short show lighted up the audience. Great group

  • it was in rome, 20th of june 2001, i guess....

  • Keith(lead singer)is from Dublin,,,,very Irish

  • great version, but it doesn't beat the pogues. I also miss the scream alot :p

  • Yo Man! Better than the Pogues version by far! Heyo!

  • anyone know how i can download this video so that i can put it on my iPod?

  • i use a tool called tubesock

  • i really have to agree with mr. gifford on his assessment. you will not find a more high energy band that engages the crowd more than this band - they are excellent. i'd put them in the top 2 of the best bands you've never heard of (and i don't know who the other band is!).

  • I love these guys. They're really amazing.

  • No scream...That's a bummer...I love The Pogues' Version.

  • I like these folks...

    Great music...
