  • Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

  • The bottom suckers have more vegetative growth and less fruit than the top where the hormones are more concentrated. When you pick off the suckers it allows the plant to concentrate on fruit production at the top. Your yield will be better, your tomatoes will be better. Yeesh people, get it together. Have you ever looked at the poor lanky suckers at the bottom? They suck.

  • are most heirlooms determinate or indeterminate?? brandywines for example?

  • I love my mom but had to do this

    Ur mum will pass way

Post this to 10vids and she wont

  • @Rainbow75961 My mom is dead. Thanks for killing her.

  • THANK YOU!! I finally learned without any hassle! I can prune my tomatoes with ease!!!!!

  • This is great and all, but how do I prune TOMATOES?

  • @megaTmarshall Pruning tomatoes is a good thing, It allows air flow to help prevent blight and diseases. I help run a family greenhouse (48yrs now) we were told by government that due to all the excess moisture that Manitoba has had the late blight will be here again. So pruning will help!

  • growing wisdom kicks both ehowgarden and expertvillage right in the nuts. Great videos man

  • At last a video that explains exactly what a sucker is - thanks chaps!

  • stymye, -- you can argue or you can have more tomatoes - your choice. I'll listen to those who have done it rather than those who speculate on their own lack of knowledge. Removing suckers and even a few extra branches on large plants also provides more air and sun and reduces disease.

  • @turnitupmike who's arguing? ..lol .. I simply asked an honest question,, I'm always willing to learn more

  • I still don't see how pinching suckers increases yields, when the suckers grow tomatoes... can someone explain that ?I can only see this being true in a short growing season.

  • @stymye It's because the suckers take longer to produce fruit and put more energy into foliage (so the fruit from them will be small), so by removing them the plant can concentrate its energy into producing less (but bigger and higher quality) fruit. Hope that helps :)

  • @stymye I don't see how pinching suckers increases yields either. Didn't nature put suckers & leaves on tomato plants for a very good reason? Perhaps to shade out scorching hot sunlight that could ruin the fruit? In my opinion, some people like to "fiddle" with nature too much and claim to be an expert on YouTube.

  • Clear & informative - thanks!

  • this is the most informative and visual video i've seen. i have no idea that i needed to prune my tomatoes to get a better yield of tomatoes. my cherry and yellow pear tomatoes grew to over 6 feet tall, but they don't have a lot of tomatoes. then i saw this video and now i have lots growing. thanks! you guys rock!

  • This video completely demystifies what a sucker is, how I prune it and why I go through this exercise. Thank you so much!

  • @heidibaylor don't take the piss. this is serious. some people actually want to watch this. fucking troll.

  • wohho next morning i go down and prune my cherry tomato plants. Finally i know how to... I'm a guerilla gardener, i grow at the housing estate.

  • Great tips thank you.

  • good vid dude

  • THANKS FOR THE TIPS PLEASE CHECK OUT MY OUTDOOR HYDROPONIC HEIRLLOM TOMATO GARDEN!

  • perfect video, just wish i knew what part to cut off before the first frost

  • Best clip regarding tomatoes on You Tube. The "weave" is called the "Florida Weave;" if you google it you can read about it for days. MANY modifications, tips, trial/error info out there. This is my first year weaving; so far it is awesome, but I think you can over-prune as well. I stunted my plants a bit.

  • After pruning, you can remove the leaves at the bottom of the plants, if put them in a container with a little water for around 2 weeks. They will start to grow seeds and if you plant them up you will get more plants.

  • your'e quite a scary person, aren't you. about as scary as a tomato plant. about as intelligent as well. try using big words and stretch that little under used organ in your head. when gardeners prick out, i think they talk about you. bye bye,big drip.

  • learned a lot! Thank you.

  • i find the best way to prune is to fuck it the plant

  • @MrDripdrop Ya comment don't make sense. Before making stupid, dumb ass remarks, think, think again, then type away otherwise, stop making a dick of ya self.

  • @bobbelsekwol ill like making a dick of myself, it makes me feel good inside and also fuck u

  • I truck gardened for years when I was a child & that is exactly how we did it too! Course, we also had 20,000 plants in the field too! But, all that backbreaking work also paid off too!

  • was hoping to see a video on topping off a plant

  • Prune!

  • I do the opposite and I end up with boatloads of tomatoes. I don't grow mine vertically though. I grow laterally.

  • Great Work!! thanks for continuing this effort!

  • What kind of wood are they using and do they resuse the stakes every year?

  • sucker detection ,sounds good

  • @cavetroll666 you are the fake

  • Many thanks for the video.

  • Its nice for an old tomato grower like me to learn new tips, your basket weaving is great and also trimming the growth ends a month before frost. thanks again

  • Fantastic video, thankyou very much!

  • Excellent video. Wish I saw this in the Sping!

  • my tomato plant is about 8ft high its a sunbaby..how can i prune it to make it smaller..???

  • You can prune the plants, then remove the leaves of the bottom of the plants, then place them in a jar of water from approx 2 weeks. They will grow seeds then plant them in a pot of compost and you will have more plants (cloning) !!

  • They will not grow "seeds" they will grow roots.

  • I have seen a lot of books, video's on growing tomatoes... and this 3 minute clip has got to be one of the most informative resources I have yet to find! The mysteries on how to identify leaders and suckers on indeterminate tomatoes finally answered in plain english and illustrated so you can actually see what they are referring to! Thank you!

  • Thanks for the tips on pruning, I am a novice growing my first plants this summer, I like the tip for basketweaving and will try it!

  • I cut suckers off and buried them into the soil, and there were other independent tomato organisms. Basket Weaving is a good idea. I had to make one knot a prop a tomato plant; it was a time-consuming job.

  • Excellent, thanks!

  • Best tomato video I could find, ty

  • I liked the whole video. Easy and informative. I really liked the basket weaving and the point of pinching the leaders about a month before frost. I wonder does pinching the leaders apply to the bush type tomatoes as well??
