I've been in the Army for 6 years, and Krav and Systema are very effective combat systems. Notice that "combat" part. These are designed to inflict maximum damage, not win a parking lot brawl. This is for severe injury and death. If you want self defense, take Karate. If you want an effective system that works for any size opponent, it's Krav or Systema.

The heavy set guy is Mikhail Ryabko. Do you know what his present occupation is? He is the Advisor to the Minister of Justice in Russia. He is currently a Spetz Natz Colonel and trains many Spetz units. He does seminars as well and is open to let anyone try to "drop him with a head kick" ...I've seen many show up and try. Speed=power has nothing to do with the type of impact he is making. It's much deeper than you think. I suggest you try this art with either Mikhail or someone who is qualified

Please stop the BS of comparing this with MMA. It's totally different. MMA is sports, this kind of systems not. So it's incomparable. Also, Ryabko'systema is not linked to Spetsnaz in general. In Russia there are many different Spetsnaz organisations. Most of them learn Combat Sambo. Some however do learn stuff which is similar to this. So gather more information before you post your opinion.
I have a friend hear in london who is an ex spetsnaz who fought in chechnya. he says there is ALOT of BS regarding systema..like this guy..he says the stuff they really learn is more similar to the stuff you see in MMA

it would be illegal. there are some touch points that can damage you. also in the ufc they do not let you hit behind the head or neck. they actually started to add alot more rules.
combat in the UFC and combat in the jungle, lethal combat environment are NOT the same. What happens in the cage and what happens in say a CQB environment where there are knives and guns involved are totally different. UFC with all of it's rules and rounds would not work well in a military environment where there are none. With a 100 pound ruck sack on your back, I doubt you want to go to the ground with a guy. You need subtle soft, effective techniques that allow you to eliminate enemies quick.
I am an ex military guy. Just because you cannot do it , does not mean that it cannot be done. You should meet Vladamir, Ryabko, Starov, or anyone who has any real skill this art and have them explain to you what they are doing. These guys are not just martial art teachers. The are ex Operators who aren't afraid to demonstrate of defend themselves against anyone. I was skeptical and learned the hard way. Meet one of these guys at a seminar and see for yourself..then get back to me.

another thing, the Russian Mil. doesn't necessarily teach Systema. It's taught within their special operations units such as Spetznaz. The common working military are not taught such specialized skills.

You've obviously never been to a Systema class, because the fact that you get smacked, *full contact*, nearly every class would be the first thing you'd remember. Next would be the bruises on your chest and ribs for three weeks. Systema classes work hard - too hard for some people. Vlad lost a lot of students at first because of all the painful full contact in his classes. You're better off going to a class, rather than badmouthing a video you don't understand.
Well, there aren't "empowering blows" in the average Systema class. Ah, but that's right, you already know all about it, since you've been to so many classes rather than making an overarching statement based on an out of context clip demonstrating one person's mastery.
And on the street, you get hand wraps and referees, and can grapple until you submit or are submitted...gotcha'! That must be why the Russian Ministry of Justice set up a foundation under Col. Ryabko, and why he trained their bodyguards for ten years - Russians are a silly bunch of push-overs...
BTW, I've done boxing, and can see the value in that and many other martial arts (over the past 20 years I've studied several, some longer than others). I won't dis what I haven't experienced or don't understand, and wouldn't study Systema unless I'd found it effective - same for all high ranking instructors in other arts who've switched over.

The main problem with most of the criticisms is that they're based entirely on brief clips that feature only some of the more obscure or esoteric parts of Systema, totally out of context, and *ignore* the videos which actually show what the majority of the training is like.

I'd second that. Bowxer's eyesight/distance judgement is usually the last attribute to go and I haven't heard any reports of Wing Chun practitioners going blind either, and most of their attacks are centre-line. Also his boxing stance is horrible to watch...
You are interpreting too much into this. This is merely a presentation about the psychology of the fight. You make your opponent confident, discouraged, or disoriented by hitting different areas of the body with varying force - there is no magic or mystery behind it.

I've been in the Army for 6 years, and Krav and Systema are very effective combat systems. Notice that "combat" part. These are designed to inflict maximum damage, not win a parking lot brawl. This is for severe injury and death. If you want self defense, take Karate. If you want an effective system that works for any size opponent, it's Krav or Systema.

The heavy set guy is Mikhail Ryabko. Do you know what his present occupation is? He is the Advisor to the Minister of Justice in Russia. He is currently a Spetz Natz Colonel and trains many Spetz units. He does seminars as well and is open to let anyone try to "drop him with a head kick" ...I've seen many show up and try. Speed=power has nothing to do with the type of impact he is making. It's much deeper than you think. I suggest you try this art with either Mikhail or someone who is qualified

Please stop the BS of comparing this with MMA. It's totally different. MMA is sports, this kind of systems not. So it's incomparable. Also, Ryabko'systema is not linked to Spetsnaz in general. In Russia there are many different Spetsnaz organisations. Most of them learn Combat Sambo. Some however do learn stuff which is similar to this. So gather more information before you post your opinion.

combat in the UFC and combat in the jungle, lethal combat environment are NOT the same. What happens in the cage and what happens in say a CQB environment where there are knives and guns involved are totally different. UFC with all of it's rules and rounds would not work well in a military environment where there are none. With a 100 pound ruck sack on your back, I doubt you want to go to the ground with a guy. You need subtle soft, effective techniques that allow you to eliminate enemies quick.

I am an ex military guy. Just because you cannot do it , does not mean that it cannot be done. You should meet Vladamir, Ryabko, Starov, or anyone who has any real skill this art and have them explain to you what they are doing. These guys are not just martial art teachers. The are ex Operators who aren't afraid to demonstrate of defend themselves against anyone. I was skeptical and learned the hard way. Check out 'systema final report' on the Bullshido, has a very good run down on the good and bad points (ie. marketing, outrageous claims of superantural ability) of Systema The assertion by systemists that the Russion mil teach systema is dismissed by RMAists.

as far as RMAists disclaiming this. Just because they are RMAists doesn't mean they have the final say on what works and what doesn't. Mikhail Ryabko is currently the advisor to the Minister of Justice in Russia. I doubt he got to that position using/teaching an art that doesn't work. Also, Bullshido is not the ultimate word on martial arts. See for yourself and then decide.

You've obviously never been to a Systema class, because the fact that you get smacked, *full contact*, nearly every class would be the first thing you'd remember. Next would be the bruises on your chest and ribs for three weeks. Systema classes work hard - too hard for some people. Vlad lost a lot of students at first because of all the painful full contact in his classes. You're better off going to a class, rather than badmouthing a video you don't understand.

BTW, I've done boxing, and can see the value in that and many other martial arts (over the past 20 years I've studied several, some longer than others). I won't dis what I haven't experienced or don't understand, and wouldn't study Systema unless I'd found it effective - same for all high ranking instructors in other arts who've switched over.

The main problem with most of the criticisms is that they're based entirely on brief clips that feature only some of the more obscure or esoteric parts of Systema, totally out of context, and *ignore* the videos which actually show what the majority of the training is like.

If you guys want to know what training looks like, watch the portions of the "Strikes" video where Vlad is punching his students, and they're drilling together. NOT ONE person who's ever trained with Mikhail talks smack about him, and you guys pick the most obscure stuff to focus on, not actual Systema training.

Do a search for chinkyLEPRECHAUN and systemadowntown - watch those vids and show me the "handwaving". chinkyL (Henry Tsoi) and JellyMan (John Elliot) showed up at the Toronto Bullshido throwdown and represented - for you MMA guys, Oleg Taktarov has great respect for Vlad & Co. and made some vids with Vlad.

@Beelzebub: The last time I encountered a boxer, I put him and his friend in the hospital (and wound up with a permanently disfigured finger on one of my hands from the rock his friend was swinging at my skull, dumba*s). Boxers aren't very good at defending against headbutts, kicks, forearm strikes, and knees to their face in my experience. Bruce Lee?? I don't mess w/ Asian MA's anymore, tike.

I'd second that. Bowxer's eyesight/distance judgement is usually the last attribute to go and I haven't heard any reports of Wing Chun practitioners going blind either, and most of their attacks are centre-line. Also his boxing stance is horrible to watch...

Well, I've dropped a guy by tapping him in the solar plexus,that soft spot between the hinge of the jaw and the ear is pretty effective, and actually an old boxers friend is the "button" (indentation) on the chin for a quick knockout. Just trying to understand how these guys' approach are different. Then again some pussy said "cunt", so I probably shouldn't take this to seriously.

Below is my experience on how I took the "Strike" 6 month ago from Systema. I dont believe the power
either that time. I tensed up my ad to take the punch, power penetrated in and seems rebound outside.
Feel to vomit and bend, take 2 mins to recover. Though I trained MT, BJJ, still I believed there is many way to use your body as weapon. Sweat and blood?
