  • Very beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

  • @icefaxi Sami are older but not directly influential for modern Europe's existence.Germany takes a lot more credit, as it should do, then Christianity, that hideous jew-virus.

  • @MorkaGraven

Jew virus?! are u some kind of nazi?!

  • @norwayairsoft Nope, I'm just anti-christian (hence the use of "jew-virus"; a virus created by the Jews), especially in a region of the world where Christianity has been extremely intolerant and dangerous to pre-existing culture. Sweden had laws stating you weren't allowed to believe in a God other than that in the Christian bible from early last millennium to around 1800 and something (from memory), causing a mistreating of people adhering to the old ways.

  • @MorkaGraven christians aren't a jew virus, they find their origins in judaism but they persecuted jews as badly as pagans.

  • increbily my parents tell me I am part norwegian so being native american i feel a strong connection between our cultures

  • Just Joiking

  • I just started learning the language of my Eira ancestors and now I can say

    Mon sidan luossalaippa!

If I visit, I'll never lack for a salmon sandwich.

  • @icefaxi you don't know rap very well, don't ya?!

  • sounds like he's trying to say LOL in as many different ways as possible

  • @icefaxi Who gives a damn. Just because the samis are super old cultural doesn't mean i like them more, or their "singing"

  • All peoples should feel lucky that we can have the opportunity to hear traditional singing like this. It teaches us about ourselves. So many treasures have been lost to time, parts of all of our ancient origins. I recently discovered that I had some Sami in my blood and I am thrilled to get to hear this music. Thanks for posting this video!

  • Love it but does anyone else get a crook in their neck?

  • @icefaxi I don't think that you should be insulting other people's cultures, but do as you will. I do agree that joik is wonderful, but I don't deny that there are so many cultures that are just beginning. I agree that we should have respect for the cultures that came before them and have most likely contributed a great deal to new cultures in this world. I will admit that I don't really like rap, either, but mostly because of it's message (mostly about money) and swearing.

  • @akikowolf Luckily it seems like rappers are swearing and talking about sex less. They seem to be becoming more artsy and thoughtful.

  • @akikowolf dude, with all due respect this "rap is all crap about hoes and drugs n gunz" argument is so freaking ill-informed. To further say that rap is now moving further to "artsy and thoughtful" is equally ignorant. If you dig beneath the surface (e.g. not trust MTV for your music needs) then you would see that there is a huge international commuity of hiphop that has nothing to do with the hoes and gunz-rap that you speak of. And that community has been going strong for several decades.

  • @Monscent Awesome! I wouldn't know, obviously, considering I usually only hear rap from MTV and VH1 and stuff (like you thought). What are some cool rappers?, because I really like the beats but not the message of the rappers I was talking about hearing on VH1 and stuff. And yeah, I should stop acting like I know what I'm talking about, and realize that, like all music, there's more rap than what I see on VH1. And I don't know what I'm saying so I'm just gonna stop. :D

  • @akikowolf Hm I really cannot list all the MC's that I personally listen too (too many), but I can give some tips of songs to show what I mean (check out these artists' other work too!):

    * Hell Razah - Lost Ark

    * RZA - A day to god is a 1000 years

    * Masta Ace feat. Strick - Unfriendly Game

    * DJ Krush feat. cl smooth - Only the strong survive

    * Wu-tang Clan - Da Mystery of Chessboxin'

    * Bahamadia - 3 The Hard Way

And then lots of stuff from Wu-tang, 2Pac, Biggie, Mobb Deep et al..

  • @Monscent Cool, I'll check them out when I can! :D

  • @akikowolf But atleast that is somewhere to start. If i try to mention every artist I listen too im gonna forget some so no point in that really.

Newer stuff like what Snowgoons produce is a bit different from the oldschool but heavy on quality. Also groups like Jedi Mind Tricks and MC's like Doap Nixon, Sicknature, Slaine, Reef the Lost Cause, 7L & Esoteric, AZ, Nas, Cormega, Nature, etc is stuff that I listen to.

  • I am Half Saami or sami Norwegian and honor my ancestors in Norway, wish to visit sometime.

  • I'm American with 1/4 Sami ancestry, but I never really heard a joik before. It's eerie how similar it sounds to Native American singing.

@ammyai: it's called prehistoric archaeology. Goes way back to when the glaciers first receded making the land habitable.

  • @kozmon0t that is quite true. Its especially interesting because to my knowledge the ways of the sami and native americans were very similar, which is not that odd I suppose when you live off the land. In my head I imagine a group of sami and a native american tribe meeting eachother a few thousand years ago hehe.

But why does the singing/chanting develop to be so similar? If someone could tell me that would be awesome.

  • ållu buorre!

  • @icefaxi completely agree!

  • farvel

  • Very Good:)

  • @icefaxi Can you prove 10,000 years with written genealogies? How do you make that claim?

  • Add Guitars and Drums and it would be fucking great!

  • Duh... You guys don't seem to know the difference between joik and complaints about a sore behind. This is clearly the latter

    =)

  • Terrible! Soon.. I'm in a hurry to hear such sami joiks!)

  • *tilts head sideways slowly* Cool. I have a gákti too.

  • Whoa, this is the "Laila" joik Barbara Sjoholm was talking about in "The Palace of the Snow Queen: Winter travels in Lapland" isn't it? What a weird coincidence this is the first one I came upon...

    Thanks for sharing

  • Is there someone who would like to share the words for what he is saying?

    thank you

  • It's about a man with name Mikkel Buljo, born sometime in the late 1800, his nick name was "Mihkkelas".

  • all the whites need to discover and hael their roots.

we must unite against the invader culture and retain our folk heritage be it sami, norsk hedensk or saxon or whatever.

  • Hvorfor skulle kameraet ellers ligget på siden? Drita begge to.

  • vitun mielenköyhä :D

  • Yes we are even diskriminated by other natives, sad ain't it?...

  • Ye `

  • Börje Salming is Same!

  • dosnt joik have have the elements of earth, wind, and fire similar to celtic music also look great if the view wasnt on its side apart from that brill

  • Oh, another thing. Anyone know where I can read a technical description of what makes a joik. Like, regae has the certain beat and blues has a certain scale? WHat makes a joik?

  • Good luck finding a technical description. :-P Wish I could myself. There are some common traits though. The singing/ chanting often captures the essence of what the song is about, sounds like what they are singing about. For example, I heard a joik called "Joik of the Wolf" which included all lot of yipping and growling. Sometimes joiks have an sinstrument accompaniment but often times they don't. "Yoik" is an alternitive spelling. Good luck.

  • You guys are the only indigenous Europeans left... Be proud! Wonderfully beutiful musik, even the angry joiks, lol.

  • The Basques are indigenous Europeans too.

  • Indigenous is not the same as different. The Saami have a deep spiritual connection with the specific land they occupy; they have their equivalent of shamans; they traditionally are a hunter/gatherer (though mostly hunter) culture. These things are not shared with the Basque.

  • My last comment ment to reply to Fumerola

  • Indigenous cultures are all different. The Basque and the Sa(a)mi people can both be indigenous without sharing any traits.

  • This article articulates my feelings on this matter: nazflora. org/meaning_of_native.htm

  • guovdageino??

  • Its more an expresion of emotion...or so i was told by my ant who is ( SAME ) as am i...but...i havent lived it .

  • amazing. your culture is great. i truely respect and love it. i plan on moving to Sapmi in Russia, to more likeminds.

  • joik is traditnal in our culture ( im a same) it is really nice to hear my cousins are really good at it ... and why do everyone say i am FROM same... you must say IAM A same ..

  • This is pretty amazing. My father was Sami , but my joik is not exactly something to be proud of. Guess i have to practice.

  • i am from sami, and this is our cultural "song". called joik. i use to joik sometimes but not THAT often, but its fun

  • it is joik, it's almost as singing, only that is is the Indigenous pepole of northen part of europe that "sings" this way.. and it looks like it is from the little place Kautokeino in Norway

  • norwegian?

  • Sami - the indigenous people of the Nordic countries.

  • hear haer.

and belief me. It's far more impressive in

    real live on the fjälls

  • I couldn't agree more on what you said about saamis and rap.

  • Hahahahahaha. Best comment ever.

It's traditional music dude. Just because we don't like it doesen't mean it sucks. The joik is an important part of whatever, the music is not bound by stupid modern commercial rules.

  • mickmac1818: So you think you can do better eh? I went on your account and saw the two videos you made; my brother who is TEN YEARS younger than you made a paint video not worse but probably better than yours. But, maybe you lied about your age (why? addicted to bad videos?) What icefaxi said about modern music is true.

  • mickmack, I thought you were a troll until I saw you had videos. You comment is the single stupidest one of the bunch. If you can do better, do it! We have a phrase here in the States, put up or shut up. Personally, I like Joik.

  • JOIKING IS AWSOME...WE LOVE SAMII:D

  • fantastic video, shame my neck is in agony ;)

  • Joiking is actually the oldest form for singing in Europe!!:-)

  • i like the way the dude goes like: "alialoailaoalo". Its sound pretty good actually-.
