i like this version better than the studio version, it's got a better flow to it. watch the pleasure on his face in that first solo, right at 2:00. i think rory got more hedonistic pleasure from playing the guitar than anybody else ever did.

It's R's songwriting that mattered as much as his axe work. Don't get me wrong, his playing was brilliant to say the least, only, it was b/c of his songwriting gift that he retains his freshness today, imo. The pubs and small venues of this world teem w guitar-driven, blues rock bands, but Rory took the 3 pc format and delivered something you can still listen to today w/o cringing & reaching for your "Oldies 101" coffee mug & matching respirator. Few big gtr/bass/dr acts went multiple decades.

I think Rory played my University, Aberystwyth, twice as a warm up to his tours. Word was that he got 1/4 of his normal fee + bottle of whiskey (cant remember if jamesons's or bushmills) - I remember 1 of the concerts well as I went backstage & he was the nicest/coolest guy ever - so far removed from the self-important rap & r n b "stars" of today. Rest in peace, Rory, thank you for a fabulous evening which I will never forget (unfortunately I remember nothing of the other concert, blush!!)

Right on! every time I hear Rory or any really good musician you can always hear something different with every listen, even in the studio recordings, and Rory was a master of improvisation, total free will when he is playing,as all the greats do,eg, Hendrix, Albert King, BB. King, Peter Green, etc.

It is difficult to compare guitar heroes,because they all have different styles.

Rory could not play the tapping solo's like Eddie Van Halen, and Eddie can't play the blues like Rory.

Paul Gilbert is extreme fast with a lot of technique,but can't play flamengo like Paco De Lucia, and Paco can't play neo-classical rock like Yngwie Malmsteen.

So there is not a world greatest guitar player, just a lot that are great in their own styles, and Rory was one of them.

Well said fast. In my opinion though one thing set Rory apart from the people you mentioned with the exception maybe of Paco. Rory didn't have the flash, glitter and rehearsed sound. He seemed more spontaneous and poured in more "real" emotion. But your point is well taken. I like lot's of guitarist. Take Kurt Cobain, I don't think he was technically a great player. He was just real nice to listen to, I his music a lot. It didn't matter if he was a real guitar master.

I always liked Rory because like Steveie Ray Vaughan he never played a solo two time's the same.

I saw Rory here in Holland 5 time's ,and he always played more than two hours,and he always gave a great show.

I play guitar for more than 25 years,so Kurt Cobain is not somebody i listen to,his playing is too simple for me.
