Even with awful baggy shorts that make her look like she'd shat herself she was still gorgeous.... it was 1988.... I was 10.... and I couldn't decide who I was in love with more, Jane Wiedlin or Susanna Hoffs. The ultimate conundrum.
Why do artist feel the need to lip sync songs when they perform on televised shows? Do they feel they do not have any real talent outside of the 'help' they get when singing in a studio? I can understand Brittany or Gaga needing the studio electronic 'help' to make them appear they have some type of musical talent, but not Jane W. You do not find Annie Lennox or Dolly Parton trying to bluff their audiences and fans.
@ltlmalak2 Actually, the decision to have an artist lip sync is usually decided by the show the artist is appearing on, not the artist themselves. It was much easier to simply have an artist mime to their hit recording rather than have to go thru the technical set-up that a real band performing would require. These days, most shows like this (that still exist) have switched to having "live" performances (or some, to a pre-recorded new track mimed "live".)
@GoGosUnsealed It was the Milli Vanilli nonsense that stop the lipsyncing on shows. Prior to that I really don't remember live performances being the norm unless it was on late night or the Grammy Awards
@GoGosUnsealed Nowadays, with digital desks, you can store most of the EQ etc settings so it's easier to have bands play live... but setup and teardown is still timeconsuming. Back then, with analogue desks - it would be near-as-dammit impossible to setup, record and teardown the 6 bands that could appear in a TOTP episode
@ltlmalak2 She was performing on a UK show called Top Of The Pops. Unfortunately it was the policy of the show at the time that everyone performing had to lip sync.
TOTP was just a fun music show. If you wanted serious a live music show in Britain, you'd be watching the Old Grey Whistle Test (or more recently, Later with Jools Holland).
Prior to music videos, TOTP would often just have dancers performing to songs if the performer was unable to appear in the studio that week.
@ltlmalak2 Well as Annie Lennox appeared on this show many times and mimed - your point is rather lost. Obviously Annie has a far better voice than Ms Wiedlin
@lifeafter3pints I must have seen that film a dozen times but have not realised it was her. Yet now I cant believe I was so blind!! Damn she is fine!!

Did she play Joan of Arc in the Bill and Ted film?
